Chapter 14: I'm so angry

Yao Wenbin's smile froze. Why was Lu Zhan bringing this up now?!

It was intentional, definitely intentional!

He wanted to get rid of him, but he refused to let Lu Zhan do as he wished!

Yao Wenbin pretended not to hear Lu Zhan's words and continued to chat with Shao Jingque with a smile:

"Comrade Shao, right? I've long heard of an exceptional singer in our city's art troupe. It's truly an honor to finally have the chance to see her today. I wonder which veteran singer she studied under to achieve such proficiency?"

Lu Zhan felt a lump in his teeth listening to him musing on words in a flowery manner, and couldn't help but glare at him.

Yao Wenbin was glared at, but he felt relieved. After all, it was not easy to cause trouble for Lu Zhan.

Today both of them were wearing formal military uniforms. One only needed to glance at the shoulder titles to know that this person was of the same rank as Lu Zhan, but he looked a few years older than Lu Zhan.

Shao Jingque smiled politely and said:

"Hello, Chief. My name is Shao Jingque. You can call me Xiao Shao. My singing skills still need to be improved. I have been working on it on my own. I don't deserve such high praise from you."

Lu Zhan sneered in his heart, isn't he quite good at talking?

Why does it feel so offensive whenever I talk to him?

A sweet "Hello, Chief" made Yao Wenbin's eyes narrow into a ball of chrysanthemums. Just as he was about to speak, he heard Lu Zhan beside him say sinisterly:

"You're not leaving, right? Then I'll leave. If my sister-in-law asks me, I'll just say..."

Yao Wenbin's heart trembled, and he glared at Lu Zhan indignantly. He wanted to say to Lu Zhan in a tough tone, "Go away!" But when he thought of the tigress at home, he lost his mind.

"Well, I just remembered that I have some important things to deal with. Xiao Shao, let's talk about this next time we have a chance."

After saying this, under Lu Zhan's watchful eyes, Yao Wenbin left reluctantly.

Only after Yao Wenbin was driven away did Lu Zhan feel relieved. That guy was a talkative person who never thought before speaking. No one knew how he became the section chief.

Just as he breathed a sigh of relief, he heard a sweet voice:

"Captain Lu, thank you for helping me out again today."

Turning his head, he saw a large bouquet of colorful wild flowers held before him. Shao Jingque, holding the flowers, was looking at him with a smile as beautiful as a flower:

"These are flowers the soldiers gave me. I'm offering them as a token of my gratitude for your help."

Speaking of which, Lu Zhan helped her a lot, and she also wanted to try to ease the relationship with him. If they couldn't be husband and wife, at least they couldn't become enemies.

Her sweet and bright smile made Lu Zhan dazed. Before he could say anything, his face started to get hot. He wondered if he didn't sleep well last night and caught a cold and had a fever. Why was his body so hot and cold today?

“…It’s my duty. I’m not helping you.”

He wanted to say that soldiers should have military discipline and that it was right to enforce discipline, but for some reason, his words sounded particularly stiff when he said them in front of Shao Jingque.

After Shao Jingque heard this, the smile on his face froze unconsciously.

Because Lu Zhan stepped up to help maintain order twice today, she almost forgot that Lu Zhan seemed to be in a bad mood when he left yesterday...

Lu Zhan also realized that there seemed to be something wrong with what he said, and said again:

"...How many days do you plan to stay in the guesthouse?"

He had never used his previous visiting relatives invitation vouchers, which were five per year. Shao Jingque could stay for a month without any problem, but he had to hand in the vouchers to the front desk first.

But when Shao Jingque heard these words, they had a different meaning, and a trace of embarrassment passed across her face.

I was originally planning to get the letter of introduction from the art troupe today, but Sister Wang, who is in charge of issuing letters of introduction in the office, took leave to go back to her hometown to visit relatives and won't be back for a while.

Without a letter of introduction, I can't stay at the guesthouse, and I don't know if I can successfully rent a room today...

She could only bite the bullet and answer:

"I'm sorry, Captain Lu, I didn't get a letter of introduction today, but I'll go look at houses on Sanyuan Street after work. I'll move out as soon as I find one. Don't worry, I'll do it as soon as possible!"

Lu Zhan frowned again when he heard this:

"If you don't have a place to stay for the time being, you can stay in the guesthouse. Don't worry."

Shao Jingque thought he was just being polite and replied with "understanding":

"How can that be? We're not really married. If I stay one more day, I might cause you more trouble. It wouldn't be good if people misunderstood me. You've already helped me so much, I can't keep bothering you."

As soon as these words were spoken, Lu Zhan's face darkened again.

Is she so eager to distance herself from me?

What do you mean they are not a real couple? If they are like that, they are still not a real couple. Then what kind of couple is it?

Lu Zhan just felt very annoyed. He tossed and turned all night and couldn't sleep. He couldn't understand why Shao Jingque didn't want to marry him.

They were clearly already in a relationship... Could it be that she was still thinking about marrying that guy named Qi Shengzhi?

“…..it’s up to you.”

After saying this, Lu Zhan didn't want to stay here for even a second, for fear that he would be angered to death by what Shao Jingque said.

Unexpectedly, Shao Jingque called him again:

"Captain Lu..."

Lu Zhan stopped in his tracks and turned back reluctantly:

"What else?"

Shao Jingque carefully looked at his expression and whispered:

"Can you come to the guesthouse later when you're free? Your household registration booklet... is still with me..."

Lu Zhan couldn't even breathe smoothly now. His chest heaved up and down, and it felt like a burning pain. For the first time in his life, he felt like his lungs were about to explode.
