The grey goose tilted its head to look at her, seemingly ignoring its companion's anxious urging.
"Stubborn."
Shao Jingque thought to himself, opened his arms exaggeratedly and ran towards it.
This sudden action really scared the grey goose so much that it flapped its wings and flew into the air. It soon caught up with the flock of geese that were circling and waiting for it to return.
A relieved smile appeared on Shao Jingque's face.
That's right... Let's take a break and recuperate, then leave. The winter here is too cold. If we stay here for the winter, we will freeze to death. It's better to return to the warm south with friends so that we can survive and wait for the arrival of the new spring.
Not until the flock of grey geese disappeared into the gray night did she slowly lower her head, reach into her pocket, and tightly grasp the note in her hand.
It's getting dark now, time to call Firefly back.
She did not go to the doctor's office on the fifth floor, nor did she go to other familiar departments. Instead, she went straight to the communication room at the hospital gate.
When the old man in the reception room saw her coming, he immediately smiled and said:
"Xiao Shao, you've come just in time. Last time you asked, didn't I say the wintersweets in the yard hadn't bloomed yet? This afternoon, when my wife brought me lunch, she said they were in bloom. Do you want some? If you do, I'll pick some for you tomorrow morning."
Shao Jingque also laughed and said:
"Okay, the scent of wintersweet flowers is the best. Uncle Liu, can you pick two more for me? I'll pay two yuan this time!"
When Old Liu heard that she wanted two dollars, he couldn't suppress the corners of his mouth that curled up with joy:
"Okay, no problem. I'll pick a few more for you! The best and most fragrant ones!"
Old Liu's home is on a slope not far from the hospital gate. He has a large field of sunflowers in front of his house. He originally waited for the sunflowers to mature, then picked the flower heads and sold the sunflower seeds.
Unexpectedly, one day a pretty girl came to him and asked him if he wanted to sell the sunflowers that were still in bloom.
For Old Liu, he just picked a few flowers and gave them to the little girl as a toy, without planning to charge her any money.
As a result, the little girl insisted on giving it to him, and gave him one dollar after picking five flowers.
Old Liu's monthly salary for guarding the message room was only 16 yuan. This one yuan was not a small amount of money for him. A piece of lean pork could buy him one and a half pounds, so he was reluctant to give it back after receiving it.
The little girl was very generous and asked if his family grew other flowers. If so, she could buy some for them.
Old Liu remembered that there was an old wintersweet tree in the backyard, but the weather was not cold enough in the past few days, so the wintersweet had not yet bloomed.
The little girl made an appointment with him to buy some from him when the wintersweet bloomed.
Old Liu felt strange. This flower can only be looked at but not eaten. It will wilt after a few days. He didn't know why the little girl spent money to buy it.
But the little girl said that her family member had undergone surgery and could not get out of bed. He lay motionless in the ward every day, and most of the time he could only stare at a white wall in a daze.
She wanted to try something new to add a touch of freshness to the ward so that he wouldn't feel so bored. The fragrance of flowers could also soothe people's mood and help him recover.
Old Liu was amazed when he heard this. It was the first time he saw such meticulous care being taken of a patient, even the eyes and nose were taken care of. He kept praising her for caring about her family.
That little girl is Shao Jingque.
Shao Jingque smiled and said to Old Liu:
"Uncle Liu, I'd like to borrow the telephone in the reception room to make a call. It will only take a few minutes."
There was a landline phone in the reception room, which she had noticed when she came to buy flowers.
The reason she didn't want to make the call in the doctor's office was, firstly, that she didn't want to run into any familiar doctors or nurses at the moment, and secondly, that she was worried that she would burst into tears as soon as she heard Yue Feiying's voice.
Old Liu looked a little embarrassed.
Normally, the telephone in the reception room couldn't be lent to the patient's family, but Shao Jingque had bought sunflowers from Old Liu twice before and had also reserved wintersweet flowers for tomorrow...
Old Liu stuck his head out and looked around. It was already dark and the leaders of the hospital had all gone home after get off work, so he should not be discovered.
He gritted his teeth, took out a bunch of heavy keys, picked one, opened the metal box that locked the dial button, and said nervously:
"Hit me! I'll go to the door and keep watch for you!"
Shao Jingque didn't expect that he needed someone to keep watch when he was making a phone call. He then realized that he had caused a lot of trouble for Old Liu and quickly thanked him with an apologetic tone:
"Thank you, Uncle Liu. I'm sorry for the trouble. I will do it as soon as possible!"
Old Liu waved his hand, looking righteous and awe-inspiring:
"Don't worry, just close the door. I'll be watching from the door. If anyone comes, I'll knock three times. Just hang up the phone and open the door!"
Shao Jingque was at a loss whether to laugh or cry when he heard this. Could it be that the phone call had turned into an underground war?
"Okay, I understand. Thank you for your help!"
Old Liu put on his hat, buttoned his collar, clasped his hands together and went out, not forgetting to close the door.
Shao Jingque looked at the clock on the wall of the message room. It was already past 8:15. She dialed the number on the note, and the call was picked up after just two rings.
A familiar voice came anxiously:
"Hello, is that Que'er?"
Shao Jingque's nose felt sore just by hearing Yue Feiying's voice:
"Hinako, it's me."
Unexpectedly, as soon as she finished saying these words, she choked up and couldn't speak.
From the other end of the phone came Yue Feiying's rapid-fire words:
"My dear aunt, you finally called! I've been sitting by the phone since 7:30, my eyes are almost cross-eyed!"
