Wang Tao's mother had been receiving glucose for two days and hadn't eaten a single grain of rice. She was already starving.
Seeing that Wang Tao's father, who was so annoying, had left and Wang Tao was nowhere to be seen, her eyes were fixed on the half-eaten steamed bun left on the bedside table.
The steamed bun was left over from last night and was now hard and crumbly. Even Wang Tao's father didn't want to eat it just now, but now she was drooling at the sight of the half-eaten bun.
While the patient in the bed next to her had also drawn the curtain to take a nap, she quietly reached out and picked up the half-steamed bun. Just as she was about to put it in her mouth, she heard a familiar voice at the door shouting:
"Mom, I'm coming!"
The sudden cry of "Mom" startled her so much that she quickly turned around and threw the half-eaten steamed bun in her hand under the bed. The next second, Wang Tao strode in.
His mother was so angry that she gritted her teeth. It didn't come earlier or later, but just when she couldn't help but want to have sex, it came. She didn't know if this father and son were sent by God to go against her.
Wang Tao's mother immediately frowned, leaned against the pillow with an uneasy look on her face, and said weakly:
"Don't call me mom. I don't have a son as disobedient as you."
Wang Tao curled his lips speechlessly. His mother has always been like this, never giving up until she achieves her goal. As long as his father or he doesn't follow her wishes, she will pretend to be sick and bedridden until they compromise.
But this time it concerns a major event in his life, and he doesn't want to compromise easily again.
"Mom, I know what you're angry about, but I really don't want to go on blind dates with those girls. I'm only at home for two days. Even if we meet, how much can we get to know each other better? How can we rush into such a hasty decision about marriage?"
Hearing him bring up this topic, Wang Tao's mother suddenly became excited and turned over and said:
"What's wrong with two days? Didn't your father and I only meet once before we got engaged? He was brought to your grandfather's house by your second grandfather, and we met in the main hall. It was enough for us to fall in love with each other, and now we have lived a happy life together, haven't we?"
Wang Tao had heard this repetitive talk countless times, so he patiently continued:
"Mom, society is different now than it was back then. We value free love, and the idea of getting engaged after just one meeting is outdated. I can't accept that anyway."
Wang Tao's mother listened to what he said and found every word unpleasant to her ears:
"Asking you on a blind date isn't like asking you to buy clothes. What's so outdated about it?! I don't object to you being free to date, but why don't you find someone to date?! If you already have a partner, would I still force you to go on a blind date?!"
"You haven't even had time to go home in the past three years, so where do you find the time to find a partner?! And you think two days is too short? If I don't stay in the hospital for these two days, I'm afraid you won't even be able to spare these two days. What girl would want to date someone she doesn't see every day?"
The more his mother spoke, the sadder she became. She thought of how her aunts and uncles would often come to her with their grandson to show off, and she felt even more upset. She started crying as she spoke.
Wang Tao couldn't argue with his mother. He felt that the series of questions were like machine guns shooting into his ears, accompanied by his mother's ups and downs of crying, which made his temples ache.
The only key point I heard from his mother was that if he already had a partner, his mother would not force him to go on blind dates.
"Mom, stop crying!"
It would have been fine if he didn't try to persuade her, but the more he tried, the louder she cried.
Although the curtains were drawn on the beds next door, the unusual silence in the ward at this moment actually showed that everyone in the ward was listening attentively to the noise, which made Wang Tao, who was already thin-skinned, feel even more uneasy.
In order to make his mother calm down quickly, Wang Tao made up his mind and said through gritted teeth:
"Who said I can't find a partner? I already have someone I like and we're in contact. You and my aunt, please stop messing with me!"
As soon as these words were spoken, the crying in the ward stopped abruptly.
Wang Tao's mother turned around in surprise, grinning and asked him eagerly:
"Really? You didn't lie to me? Do you really have someone you like?"
Wang Tao watched his mother's expression change faster than the weather changed. Her smiling face was still covered with tears that she had not had time to wipe away. He felt a little amused and helpless.
He was about to answer when a loud voice from the doorway of the ward interrupted him:
"Really! I'll vouch for him!"
Wang Tao's mother didn't have time to be happy, but when she saw that the person who said this was Wang Tao's father, her face fell instantly:
"Humph! You two must be trying to team up to trick me again. I'm telling you, it won't be that easy this time! If Taoer doesn't agree to the blind date, I won't leave the hospital!"
Wang Tao, speechless, was also surprised to see his father come back:
"Dad, why are you back? Didn't you say you were going to work at the factory?"
Wang Tao's father smiled widely at this moment, winking at him:
"Going to work is not as important as seeing my daughter-in-law. You have a girlfriend and you're still hiding it. If I, your father, wasn't smart and noticed something was wrong with you early on, I'm afraid you would have kept it a secret."
"You're such a fool! Dating is such a normal thing at your age. Why should you be embarrassed? If you had told me earlier, your mom wouldn't have had to go hungry for the past two days!"
Wang Tao was completely bewildered. His mother lost all patience. She ignored his father's sarcasm about her pretending to be sick and pressed him urgently:
"Please explain clearly what you mean? Does Taoer really have a partner?"
Wang Tao's father nodded vigorously:
"Isn't it? What do you think he's been up to since he disappeared all morning? His girlfriend twisted her ankle, and this guy's accompanying her to see a doctor! I just ran into them when I was going downstairs, there's no doubt about it! They were eating those meat buns, you and I taking bites, they were having a blast!"
Normally, Wang Tao's mother would not easily believe his father's lies, but this time his words sounded so plausible that she began to believe them.
Wang Tao's mother turned around and asked Wang Tao:
"Is everything your father said true?"
By now Wang Tao had understood what his father was talking about. His father must have mistaken Ding Ling for his partner.
Wang Tao subconsciously wanted to explain, but suddenly he thought that if this misunderstanding could prevent his mother from forcing him to get married, it might be a good thing. For a moment, he hesitated and did not answer in time.
Wang Tao's father patted his chest proudly:
"Of course it's true. I brought everyone here to you, how could it be fake?"
When these words came out, Wang Tao was so shocked that his eyes almost popped out of his head. What do you mean by bringing everyone here?!
Wang Tao's mother was just as shocked as him, but her shock was a pleasant surprise. She was so overjoyed that she didn't even lie down and sat up from the bed.
"People are here?! Where are they? Where's that girl?"
Wang Tao's father winked at the two of them, then proudly retreated to the door and extended his hand as if to help someone.
"Xiao Ding, come in, don't be shy, we are all family!"
Wang Tao couldn't believe his ears. Did his father really bring Ding Ling to his mother's ward?!
The next second, supported by her father, Ding Ling, one foot wrapped in gauze, appeared at the door of the ward, her face flushed with shame, and she whispered softly:
"Hello, Auntie. My name is Ding Ling, and I'm Wang Tao's new girlfriend."
