Chapter 68 Roar in the Jungle

Lu Zhan was wondering how this girl could have walked so far.

Suddenly, an eerie chill came from behind Lu Zhan, and in an instant all the hairs on his back stood up.

Those who survived the ever-changing battlefield were much more sensitive to the approach of danger than ordinary people. If it were not for their strong intuition and instincts, they would not have been able to successfully escape danger in land battles time and time again.

But at this moment, that creepy feeling suddenly appeared.

Lu Zhan didn't hesitate for a second, his body reacted almost immediately, he quickly pulled out the dagger from his military boots and blocked it in front of him, looking around at the dark woods with a sharp gaze.

The range that a torch could illuminate was very limited, and it was impossible for Lu Zhan to see clearly what was around him. Instead, it seemed to mark the two of them in the darkness.

Lu Zhan's sixth sense clearly told him that at this moment there was some dangerous creature in the darkness, staring at the two of them with a fierce look.

He immediately became extremely alert, looking around vigilantly, and the hand holding the dagger kept making defensive movements in front of him.

Lu Zhan thought to himself that something was wrong. He was afraid that the girl's wounds were bleeding, and the smell of blood in the air would attract the wild beasts in the mountains.

The flood rose at the foot of the mountain, and the wild beasts that had been hiding in the deep mountain canyons must have been driven to the top of the mountain. I just wonder if it was a wolf, a tiger, or a bear that was targeting the two people at this moment?

If it is a lone wolf, it is no problem to deal with one in a land battle;

If it were a tiger, there would be a fierce battle, with a 50-50 chance of winning or losing;

If it's a bear...I'm afraid the two of them will be in danger!

Time passed second by second, and Lu Zhan felt that every second was like a year. He didn't know when the beast hiding in the dark would suddenly attack, nor did he know from which direction it would suddenly pounce.

It started to drizzle again, and the fine raindrops quickly extinguished the torches beside the two people, and darkness instantly swallowed them up.

At this moment, Lu Zhan's nerves were stretched to the limit, and even his breathing became as light and slow as possible. Finally, he heard a hint of unusual movement -

“Crack.”

The sound was light and crisp, like the sound of a heavy object breaking a branch.

Lu Zhan turned around slowly and quietly, facing the direction of the sound, tightly gripping the dagger in his hand, ready for battle.

But then there was another suffocating silence, and the only sound was the dripping of raindrops on the leaves, as if the "click" sound just now was just an illusion caused by Lu Zhan's tension.

But Lu Zhan did not relax his vigilance at all. After his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he could see shadows of varying depths with the help of the moonlight that poured into the dense forest. He knew that danger must be hiding in those shadows.

Not knowing how long the stalemate would last, Lu Zhan's arms, which were raised in front of his chest, began to feel slightly sore, and excessive concentration made him even more tired.

He knew that the beast had been lurking patiently in the dark, watching him, waiting to exhaust his strength so that it could take him down with one blow when his will was at its weakest.

This thought made his heart sink. Such a "smart" beast was most likely a bear.

Liu Jincai returned to the base camp to find a rope, which would probably take quite a while. The slope was at least fifty meters high, and he had to find enough ropes to connect them before he could rescue the two of them.

He couldn't just sit there and wait for death. Lu Zhan knew he couldn't waste any more time. The longer he went on, the less strength he would have and the smaller the possibility of successfully repelling the beast.

He pretended to relax his guard, put down the dagger in front of his chest, turned around and seemed to be looking for something on the ground.

In fact, at this moment his attention was fully focused on what was behind him. One hand hidden in front of him was tightly holding a dagger, and the other hand was holding a handful of mud and sand mixed with gravel. The only sound he could hear in his ears was the sound of his heartbeat.

Finally, he caught another tiny "click" sound, and the location had changed to behind him.

Lu Zhan immediately held his breath and poured all his strength into the hand that was tightly holding the dagger.

One second, two seconds, three seconds...

Suddenly, a fishy wind blew from behind. Lu Zhan turned around without hesitation, threw away the mud and sand in his hand, and then stabbed forward with the dagger.

“Aho-ho—”

A deafening roar sounded in the dense forest, startling a flock of birds and shocking everyone in the base camp.

Liu Jincai, who was searching for ropes, was the first to react. He grabbed a torch and ran back.

"Oh no! It's a bear! The battalion commander and the others are in danger!"

When Ma Jun heard the noise, he knew he must have encountered a ferocious beast. He didn't care about anything else and shouted:

"Everyone stay put, soldiers, prepare for battle, protect the people!"

"yes--"

Following his command, the soldiers quickly surrounded the crowd in the center, with everyone standing on the ground facing outwards.

Ma Jun picked up two handy shovels and chased after him.

On this side of the slope, the black bear whose jaw was stabbed by Lu Zhan was howling in pain, and its claws as big as a basin were waving wildly in the air.

It opened its bloody mouth, wanting to bite off the neck of the person who hurt it, but at this time its eyes were hurt by the mud and sand raised by the land battle, and it couldn't open them at all.

The black bear, feeling both pained and angry, rushed towards him like a madman. Lu Zhan seized the opportunity, dodged, and stabbed it hard in the back of the neck.

If this blow hits the aorta, there is hope that the black bear will lose its ability to attack.

But the black bear turned its head in pain, and the powerful impact caused the dagger in Lu Zhan's hand to fall out of his hand, leaving only a long and deep bloody mark on its neck.

Blood kept gushing out. The strong smell of blood and severe pain made the black bear go crazy in an instant. The gravel in the mud and sand scratched its eyes, and two streams of blood flowed out of its eyes. It looked extremely terrifying, like a huge killing tool.

Lu Zhan was also injured in the collision. His right arm lost sensation and he couldn't even lift it up.

What made him even more desperate was that he didn't know where the dagger in his hand had fallen. Without the dagger, he was no match for the black bear with his bare hands.

The completely enraged black bear howled to the sky with a terrifying roar, then stood up straight, its burly and strong body nearly three meters tall!

Perhaps the blood flowing from its eyes washed away the mud and sand. The black bear stood up at this moment and stared straight at Lu Zhan who was leaning against the tree trunk and gasping for breath. His blood-red eyes revealed a bloodthirsty wildness.

It raised its head slightly and roared again, its deafening roar echoing through the woods, shaking the leaves, as if it were a declaration of death.

Lu Zhan tried hard to steady his breathing and not let himself show any panic in front of this huge beast, as that would only make the beast attack him faster.

He stared at the black bear with his eyes, unwilling to give in, and saw its huge body covering him like a black wall.

The next second, without any warning, a huge bear paw suddenly slapped him with great force.
