Chapter 111: Horror novels come true

Seeing that Pei Yu'an had left, Li Nian remembered Li Sisi's vomiting in the afternoon and felt a little worried: "What happened to you at noon today? Did you eat something bad?"

Li Sisi's face turned pale immediately after being reminded by her. The cake in her hand not only lost its fragrance, but even had a smell of rotten meat.

She swallowed hard, her face constipated as she spoke in a tangled voice, "No, I'm going to tell you something shocking. You'd better not be unable to eat later."

She put down the cake in her hand, leaned her arms on the table, and lowered her voice: "Do you still remember the case of the haunted house of Mr. Wang on the street?"

Li Nian nodded: "Well, what's wrong?"

"Something spontaneously combusted in his house again today, so we went to his house to check it out, and then I saw he had vegetables growing in his backyard!"

Li Sisi recalled the scene this morning and felt that the aroma of the food on the table had completely changed.

The vacant space in the backyard of Mr. Wang's house was turned into a vegetable garden by the old couple, which looked very abrupt. Li Sisi suddenly thought of a horror novel she had read before.

So he said to himself, "Could there be something buried under this ground?"

The officer beside her was speechless when he heard this: "Little Li, what are you talking about? What can be buried in the ground?"

Li Sisi explained, "I once read a storybook in which the protagonist had a yard full of roses. Every time she killed someone, she would bury the body in the rose patch. People passing by her yard would praise her roses for being so bright and beautiful."

The officer behind him felt cold when he heard this: "Oh my, what kind of nonsense are you looking at? Is this something a human could come up with?"

"Dig!" Pei Yanli's cold voice suddenly rang out.

The officers were stunned, but still followed orders and found hoes to dig the ground.

When Old Lady Wang heard the commotion, she quickly ran over to stop them: "Don't dig! We're relying on these vegetables to get through the winter!"

Old Man Wang also hurried over and said, "Just investigate the case, but why are you digging up my land? My husband and I worked so hard to grow these crops. Don't touch them!"

The neighbors who came over to watch the fun also spoke up.

"Yes, Old Lady Wang gets up early and works late every day to carry manure and water the fields, but she treasures her vegetable plots."

"We in the city don't have as much farmland as people in the countryside. We've only dug out two plots of land in a yard this big. Are you officials supposed to dig for them?"

"It's not their own family! I think it's because the old couple has no one at home! Poor son and grandson died in the war, and the two old people still have to be bullied like this!"

Old Lady Wang sat down on the ground, crushing a large patch of vegetables. She crossed her legs, slapped her thighs, and cried, "Oh my God, this is so unfair! My two sons died fighting to protect our country, and my grandson has disappeared from the battlefield. You officials are bullying us because we have no one! I'm going to die!"

Old Man Wang also sat down in another field, crushing another patch of vegetables. He didn't care, staring at Pei Yanli with cloudy eyes: "If you dare to touch our vegetables today, my wife and I will die in front of you!"

Li Sisi had just said it casually, but she didn't expect it to turn out like this.

She moved closer to Pei Yanli and tugged at the corner of his clothes. "Boss, why don't we just stop digging? I just said it casually. There's no clue that there's anything wrong with their vegetable garden."

Pei Yanli's expression remained calm as he replied indifferently, "Now I have it."

Li Sisi said "Huh?" in confusion, not quite understanding what he said.

Then he heard Pei Yanli speak coldly and ruthlessly: "Pull them apart and turn over both plots of land."

"Officials, you can't dig it up!" Old Lady Wang cried until her eyes were blurry. "You can't do this - I won't report it to the authorities. Even if I don't report it, it won't work!"

Old Man Wang stared at Pei Yanli and Li Sisi with bloodshot eyes and shouted angrily: "Get out of my house! Get out——"

The old couple collapsed and shouted in panic. Old Mrs. Wang even struggled to hit the wall: "If you touch my land, I will die in front of you!"

The neighbors who were watching were moved and stood up for the old couple.

"You servants are forcing people to death!"

"Don't touch their vegetables! They run a restaurant and they make money from these vegetables!"

"Yes, yes, what could be buried in that field? Please be kind and let those two poor old people go!"

The officer was digging with a hoe. Although he was young but strong, he could hear the voices of the onlookers talking and pleading, as well as the old couple's crying and begging.

Since the boss didn't give any orders, the officers had no choice but to continue digging.

Until the first bone emerged from the soil underground, and then one bone after another reappeared in the light of day.

More human bones were dug out amid the screams of people around.

Li Nian's eyes widened as he heard this. He asked in shock, "So, did you really guess the will-o'-the-wisp in Mr. Wang's house back then? Was it really a will-o'-the-wisp?"

"Yes." Li Sisi took a sip of water to calm her nerves before continuing, "Many of those bones were from a long time ago, and many were new! But they were clean, without any flesh at all, and there was no rotting flesh under the ground! Later, after interrogation, do you think there was no rotting flesh?"

Li Nian listened intently: "Why?"

"Because Uncle Wang's family has a big pot, they chop people up and put them in the pot to stew with seasonings!"

Li Nian gasped. No way? A horror novel translating into reality?

She suddenly remembered how Aunt Pei always said the meat at Uncle Wang's was delicious, and how she could always smell the aroma of stewed meat in the middle of the night. Her face turned pale. "They're not stewing human flesh to sell, are they?"

Li Sisi said "hmm" softly.

The two girlfriends retched in unison, then thanked in unison: "Fortunately, we came late and didn't get to eat his meat."

The two of them couldn't eat any of the food on the table.

Li Sisi stood up and began to clear the table while frowning. "What's strange is that, judging by the number of bones and the year they were killed, they should have started killing people two years ago, yet there are only a few missing people in the entire Dong'an City, including several women and children. After we examined the bones in Mr. Wang's house, we found that they all belonged to tall young men."

The two of them cleaned up the dishes and walked towards the kitchen while chatting.

Li Nian thought for a moment and said slowly, "Didn't Brother Pei say some time ago that there were spies in the city? Could they be connected to the spies? Those people might not be citizens of Dong'an City?"

Li Sisi's eyes lit up. "Yes! That's a good idea." She quickly walked to the kitchen, put down the things in her hands, turned to Li Nian and said, "Leave the dishes for me to wash. I'll go find the boss first!"

Li Nian walked a few steps behind her to the stove, watched her hurriedly running away, chuckled and shook his head.

Sisi is always so energetic!
