Chapter 20 Punishment

Li Nian had just returned to Shuixieju with Xiao Yunyu when she was called over by the maid in Madam Xiao's courtyard.

Madam Xiao, wearing a dark green gold brocade dress, sat upright on a high chair in the room, her face full of majesty and her eyes solemn.

"Yun Qiuwu, do you know what mistake you made?"

Li Nian's heart tightened, and he quickly lowered his head and whispered, "My daughter-in-law doesn't know."

Could it be that she and Sisi were discovered to be secretly selling the dowry?

By the way, where is Sisi?

Li Nian's fingers, hidden in her sleeves, suddenly tightened, and she spoke calmly, "Mother-in-law, please tell me clearly where your daughter-in-law went wrong."

Mrs. Xiao slammed the table hard, causing the teacups on the table to jingle twice and spill tea all over the table.

"You're a respectable woman, yet you actually went to a shady place like a brothel? Is this how the Yun family's tutors teach your daughters?"

Li Nian's body stiffened. She didn't expect that Madam Xiao actually knew about her visit to Furong Pavilion!

At the same time, he felt a little relieved, as long as they were not discovered to be secretly selling the dowry.

Li Nian immediately knelt on the ground, lowered her head, and said respectfully, "When I heard that my husband was in Furong Pavilion, I thought of going to look for him. I forgot that I was a woman and shouldn't go to such a place. I know I was wrong."

Madam Xiao's eyes suddenly turned cold.

"From what you said, it seems that you blame Yun Yu for going to the brothel?"

Li Nian quickly replied, "My daughter-in-law didn't mean that. As a man, it's natural for my husband to go. It's my daughter-in-law's fault. She shouldn't have gone with me."

Madam Xiao stared down at her condescendingly and snorted coldly, "It's good that you admit your mistakes." She said with disdain, "You are worthy of being the daughter of a minor official, not worthy of being on the stage!"

She looked at Xiao Yunyu, her face dignified but testing: "Yunyu, your wife is so ignorant of etiquette, I will teach her some manners for you, so that she won't embarrass the Xiao family in the future!"

Xiao Yunyu raised his cold eyes and said lazily, "I wonder how mother plans to teach her the rules?"

Madam Xiao looked at Li Nian coldly and said in a deep voice, "I won't be partial to anyone. I will punish her and Shen Fu by making them kneel together in the ancestral hall and copy "Female Virtue" and "Female Precepts" one hundred times each in front of the Xiao family ancestors. They can leave when they finish copying."

Upon hearing this, Xiao Yunyu glanced at the woman kneeling on the ground, raised his chin slightly, and said slowly, "She should learn some etiquette. As a married woman, she is so bold as to go to a place of prostitution."

He took two long steps forward and came to Li Nian. He lowered his eyes and spoke with a hint of arrogance, "The Marquis's Mansion is not a small family like yours. Since you are marrying into our family, you must abide by the rules of our mansion and forget all your previous shady tricks."

After saying this, he cupped his fists and bowed to Madam Xiao in thanks: "Then please teach her well, mother, so that she won't embarrass me when she goes out."

Madam Xiao had been secretly observing his reaction, and seeing his nonchalant attitude, she couldn't figure out what he was thinking for a moment.

Finally, he stopped probing and said in a dignified tone, "In that case, Yun Qiuwu, you will go to the ancestral hall to receive your punishment."

Li Nian respectfully thanked Madam Xiao, then stood up and trotted towards the ancestral hall.

The Xiao Mansion Ancestral Hall is located at the westernmost end and does not receive much sunlight all year round. It can only receive a little bit of the afterglow of the sunset in midsummer.

It was almost dusk, and the orange-yellow sunset fell on the roof and walls of the ancient and majestic ancestral hall, making it even more mysterious.

Li Nian couldn't wait to open the door of the ancestral hall.

Li Sisi heard the noise and looked up at the door in surprise.

Li Nian walked in hurriedly, followed by two maids.

One of them was holding a small table, and the other was holding a stack of paper and pen and ink. I immediately understood what she was here for.

"Niannian, are you also punished to copy books in the ancestral hall?"

Li Nian walked over to her and knelt down: "Yes."

A maid placed a small table in front of her, and another immediately placed a thick stack of paper and writing brushes and ink on the table.

Then they both retreated and closed the door gently.

The light in the ancestral hall dimmed as the door closed, and the surrounding windows were also tightly closed. Only two rows of white candles at the tablet in the front were flickering with dim light.

The eerie and terrifying atmosphere of the ancestral hall suddenly emerged, and the two best friends couldn't help but move closer and huddle together for courage.

The two of them whispered about what happened afterwards.

Li Sisi couldn't help but exclaimed, "No way? He's already like that, and he still hasn't slept yet?"

Li Nian shook his head: "No."

Li Sisi's expression suddenly turned serious. She lowered her voice and asked seriously, "Is he not capable?"

Li Nian shook his head again: "I don't know."

After thinking about it, Li Nian told her that he had discovered that Xiao Yunyu liked Xiao Baihua, and also told her that he planned to play the role of Xiao Baihua to win over Xiao Yunyu.

Li Sisi's eyes lit up: "Aren't you just Xiao Baihua? Just act like yourself, why do you need to pretend?"

"I'm not a white flower," Li Nian said.

Li Sisi stubbornly said, "If you are not considered a little white flower, then there are no little white flowers in this world."

The two best friends continued to chat for a while, and finally Li Nian urged them to copy the book quickly, so Li Sisi stopped talking and started copying.

Li Sisi couldn't stand it after copying a few sentences.

"Ahhh! I don't want to copy this damn thing anymore!"

As she read the contents of the book, anger surged in her heart: "At home, I obey my father; after marriage, I obey my husband; after my husband's death, I obey my son. How can I obey your uncle?"

"Bah! A man should have three wives and four concubines if he wants to have children... Women shouldn't be jealous? Then can I have children myself and continue my own bloodline? Isn't it also natural for me to have three husbands and four concubines?"
