farm.
Cheng Ye was carrying wood and walking forward.
The man who was carrying the same piece of wood with him shouted, "Did you hear that the new kid almost beat the boss of the west district to death?"
It seems like he offended someone as soon as he came in.
"This all happened a while ago."
"You were already behind the times in the news. You were just released from solitary confinement. That kid took advantage of the situation while he was working and, like a calf, he flipped the boss off his feet."
"They didn't even wait for anyone to react, they pinned the guy down and beat him up. I heard there were people trying to stop the fight, but the young man was pinning the guy down and beating him, and they couldn't pull him away."
"The boss from the west district has been here for a while now. This time he went straight to the hospital, and that kid is in solitary confinement again."
Cheng Ye did not participate in the discussion. He put the wood down and stretched his sore shoulders.
Someone shouted that dinner was ready.
He was the first one to run over, got his meal, and then ran to an old man.
"Grandpa, it's time to eat."
The old man hunched over, brushed the dirt off his body and walked towards him.
He was dressed in rags, and in the middle of winter, some of the worn-out clothes were showing flesh. His slender limbs swayed in the loose and tattered clothes, and he looked so skinny, like a piece of dried-up dead wood.
His lips were full of cracks, oozing with blood.
Seeing Cheng Ye coming, he stretched out his skinny hand and took the food that Cheng Ye handed to him.
Cornmeal is mixed with sorghum flour pancakes. Two small pancakes are eaten for one meal, plus some vegetables. There is not much oil or water.
Not to mention that people who have worked all day will not be full, even people who don’t work will get stomach acid if they eat this in the middle of winter.
The old man took a pancake, took two bites, drank some hot water to warm himself up, and felt that his strength had returned a little.
He pushed the rest to Cheng Ye: "I'm not hungry, you eat it."
Cheng Ye ate his cake with his head down: "I don't want to eat it. I'm small and I eat less."
The old man laughed twice when he heard this.
It's not like he hasn't been through this age before. It's the age when you get hungry after eating. Haven't you heard of a little boy eating his father out of money?
"Please stop working. I'll tell the foreman to do your job. You can take a rest."
"How can your work compare to mine? If you can do so much, then you will have so much work every day and both of us will be busy." The old man waved his hand: "Don't worry about me."
"I work better than you."
"Eat quickly."
…
The two were talking when someone outside shouted, "Cheng Ye, someone's looking for you!"
Cheng Ye said to the old man, "I'm going out for a while."
Cheng Ye followed the crowd out against the wind. Before he reached the destination, he saw from a distance a tall man in a military coat standing at the door, holding a little girl in a cloak by the hand.
It's made of fox fur and is snow-white, just like her name.
When Cheng Ye saw the person coming, he stopped and his face became gloomy. He was not going to move forward, but was ready to turn around and go back.
Before he could move, a voice came from behind him: "Brother Cheng Ye!"
Cheng Ye paused for a moment.
Without looking back, he walked back the way he came.
I heard the sound of a little girl running behind me. Before I got far, someone stopped me and said, "Brother Cheng Ye, where are you going?"
Looking at Cheng Baixue who was standing in front of him with a look of proud and arrogant young lady, Cheng Ye's hands hung at his sides, his rough hands clenched into fists, and his eyes were particularly complicated.
After a while, he said, "Get out of the way."
Cheng Baixue refused to let him go, but stared at him stubbornly with her eyes. Suddenly, she reached out and hugged him: "Brother Cheng Ye, I miss you. I think of you even in my dreams..."
As he spoke, his eyes turned red and tears rolled down.
A man's low laugh came from behind him. This laugh was so familiar that Cheng Ye clenched his hands even tighter.
