Chapter 50 Amnesia: It's as if they've never divorced.
Shuzhi sat by the window, holding her phone with some trepidation.
The smell of disinfectant in the hospital made her especially nervous. She couldn't even remember how she got into the hospital, and she didn't recognize any of the people coming and going these past few days.
She was terrified.
Dai Yuzhuo, whose contact was always pinned to the top of her WeChat contacts, had been blocked by her. Fortunately, after thinking hard for a long time, she could still remember his phone number.
When Dai Yuzhu first saw this unfamiliar number, she thought it was a scam and didn't answer it even though it rang twice.
But besides him, Shuzhi could think of no one else she could rely on, so she dialed a third time with trembling hands.
The call finally went through, and Dai Yuzhu asked impatiently who it was.
She was mentally prepared for this; she had probably acted willfully again, otherwise why would she have deleted all his contact information? She guessed she had angered him, and he was still angry, so she could pretend to be obedient.
As soon as she spoke, Dai Yuzhuo recognized her voice.
His deep, breathy voice trembled slightly, and there was even a suppressed sob.
"What... happened to you?" Shuzhi's heart was pounding rapidly. The white walls, white sheets, and white blankets created a desolate scene that made her not want to stay in the hospital for even a second longer. The distant mountains outside the window captivated her, reminding her of the small mountain they used to climb every weekend when they were newly married.
But she has a poor sense of direction and doesn't know if what's in front of her is actually hers.
Dai Yuzhuo spoke faster, seemingly busy packing her things. Shuzhi soon heard the door close on the other end of the phone: "It's okay, wait for me, I'll be right there."
After hanging up the phone, Shuzhi remained in a daze.
Every time there was a sound at the door, she would turn around excitedly to look, full of anticipation, but the door was never pushed open and remained tightly closed.
Other patients' families frequently walked past the door, or nurses pushed a cart full of medicine bottles past. Shuzhi was quickly overwhelmed by a loneliness that seemed to come from nowhere. Then, she gradually lost the will to wait, and then, all that remained was numbness.
It had only been fifteen minutes, but when waiting for someone, even a minute seemed to stretch on forever.
Three minutes later, Dai and Zhuo finally arrived.
The moment he pushed open the door and met Shuzhi's gaze, a slight glint of moisture flickered in his eyes.
He took a barely perceptible deep breath, and as always, taciturn, he skillfully packed her things.
It was as if they had been together for the past six months, as if they had never divorced.
He didn't explain, so Shuzhi didn't ask any questions either. She asked a few concise questions, such as how he got here, whether there were many cars on the road, and whether there was a traffic jam, and then stopped talking.
However, every time she spoke, Dai Yuzhuo would stop and look at her, waiting for her to finish speaking. Although he would only respond in a muffled voice, he still gave her plenty of attention.
On the way back, he kept thinking about how, according to the doctor, Shuzhi's condition was very bad.
She has now forgotten about the past two years. It's possible that she'll get better, or she might gradually forget even more things.
They might not even remember him.
She entered the elevator with practiced ease, pressed the floor button, and waited for him to open the door empty-handed.
The house was still the same as she remembered. To the left of the entrance was the living room, opposite the leather sofa was the television, and beyond the living room was the kitchen, which was half-closed at the moment, and there seemed to be the aroma of steaming corn.
To the right are the study and bedroom, and there are several potted plants on the balcony.
The layout of the house is very simple; relatives all say it doesn't look like the home of two young people.
Dai and Zhuo were used to keeping things spotless. Shuzhi felt as if she had been away for a long time. She first pushed open the bedroom door, really wanting to lie down on her big bed at home and have a good sleep.
However, the bedroom was empty. There was no hand cream or night cream on the bedside table, no clothes in the wardrobe, and even on the bed, there was only one pillow.
It stands alone on the right side, leaving room for one person on the left.
She turned around with some confusion and asked Dai Yuzhuo, "Why isn't there anything of mine in the house? Aren't we... married yet?"
As soon as she said it, she felt it was rash, especially since Dai and Zhuo were avoiding her gaze somewhat uncomfortably.
If she's really not married yet, and she rushes to someone's house as if she wants to stay, even asking about marriage, wouldn't Dai Yuzhuo look down on her?
Shuzhi immediately felt her face getting hot and leaned against the wall, feeling somewhat embarrassed.
The two met through an introduction and didn't have any deep feelings for each other before marriage. She didn't want to lose face in front of Dai and Zhuo.
Dai Yuzhuo stood at the door, blocking most of the southern sunlight. She stiffly gripped the door frame with one hand and cleared her throat. "We... had a fight before, and you moved out."
"Oh..." She guessed correctly, "What did they argue about?"
As if suddenly struck on the head, Dai Yuzhuo abruptly looked up at her, her left hand instinctively touching her lower abdomen. A forced smile appeared on her lips as she replied faintly, "It's nothing, it's all in the past. It was my fault."
Only after this action did Shuzhi notice his change.
He was thinner than I remembered, and his facial features were more defined, but his belly was round and protruding.
Seeing her gaze fall on her stomach, Dai Yuzhuo intentionally or unintentionally draped the coat she was carrying over her abdomen to cover the bulge.
Shuzhi didn't press the matter further. She simply put one hand on her shoulder and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Can I ask you for a favor?"
A pang of sadness welled up inside her; she was always so polite when she spoke to him.
That's good. We can't be too greedy. It's already good that she can come back and live in his house again. We can take it slow.
Dai Yuzhuo asked, "What is it?"
"I'd like to take a shower. Could you please go and get my clothes? I don't have any to change into..."
Dai Yuzhuo quickly replied, "Okay, I'll go get it. Oh no, I'll just buy you a new one. There's a shopping mall right across the street..."
Just as Shuzhi was about to say no need, that it was too much trouble, Daiyu Zhuo had already taken the keys and left.
While changing my shoes, I accidentally bumped my stomach, and my steps became a little unsteady.
She rarely saw him so nervous. Just as she was about to take off her clothes, her phone suddenly vibrated.
A message came from an unfamiliar account:
[Baby, where did you go? Why is no one at the hospital?]
She clicked on the person's WeChat Moments and was surprised to find that there were even photos of them together.
She nestled intimately in his arms, looking at him with a hint of adoration.
