Watching from the side, Ye Xiaoxiao thought Li Yanhong was truly hopeless. She couldn't help but say:
"Li Yanhong, don't drag us into this. Our family hasn't separated yet; it's just Mom and Dad's family and Second Uncle's family. This is a homecoming gift."
It's to save face for your own parents, but by doing this, you're making everyone feel very awkward.
"You're bringing shame to our family and will only cause discord between our family and your in-laws. Are you trying to sever ties with your family right after getting married?"
Li Yanhong stubbornly replied:
"You're exaggerating. I brought something with me, didn't I? They say it's the thought that counts, not the gift. Is it really just this little thing..."
Liu Juan was trembling with anger. She pointed at Li Yanhong and said:
"You heartless bastard, we've raised you for nothing all these years."
"Look at yourself now. Marrying into the Chen family won't end well for you. Don't come back begging us then."
Li Yanhong has a terrible temper; she always thinks that if someone says something nice to her, she's trying to harm her.
She disliked Ye Xiaoxiao from the bottom of her heart, and even if Ye Xiaoxiao's words made sense, she would take it as a personal attack on her.
"Hmph, so what if we cut ties? It's no big deal. We're all family, why are you arguing with me about these things? How could I have relatives like you?"
"Mom, let it go. My brother-in-law is here today, so let's just leave it at that. There's no point in saying anything more. Once the things are packed, let them go to Uncle's house first. Otherwise, they'll start complaining later!"
Ye Xiaoxiao put the two bags that Li Yanhong had brought back together. Luckily, she had been careful and hadn't let her younger siblings take anything from them. Otherwise, it would have been awkward to make up for the missing items.
Li Jianguo's initial joy at his daughter's first visit home had vanished. However, he couldn't make this public yet.
Otherwise, his reputation over the years would have been ruined by his eldest daughter.
I'm very grateful that my eldest daughter-in-law discovered these things so early on. Yes, I'm grateful.
Li Yanhong didn't take her parents' anger seriously, thinking to herself, "See, a gift will do."
Although I got scolded, at least I saved some money.
The money saved will all go into my own stomach. As for my parents, they'll calm down in a couple of days.
She carried the two combined gifts and pulled Chen Dashun to her second uncle's house next door.
After Li Chenyang saw his parents come inside, he asked his younger brothers to go to the neighbor's house to borrow a table and chairs.
That's how it is these days; nobody has any extra stuff at home.
When the food was almost ready, Ye Xiaoxiao sent someone to invite her second uncle and the others over for dinner.
The younger brothers-in-law went into the kitchen and started bringing the dishes to the table. They all drooled as they looked at the slices of beef and pork.
They hadn't eaten meat in ages. If it weren't for the fact that they would usually go to the river to catch some clams and loaches for their sister-in-law to cook, their mouths would be watering.
Lunch was served at two tables, one for adults and one for children. Ye Xiaoxiao's dishes were so delicious and visually appealing that everyone's mouths watered.
"These beef slices are as thin as paper," Uncle Li Aiguo said, praising them highly after putting one in his mouth.
"Yes, yes, and these sweet and sour pork ribs look so tempting," Auntie Er chimed in.
Li Jianguo and Liu Juan sat at the main table, smiling on the outside but seething inside.
That good-for-nothing eldest daughter, I should never have prepared such a lavish feast for her.
"Come on, everyone, eat more." Ye Xiaoxiao brought over a plate of freshly stir-fried shredded pork with green peppers. "This is the last hot dish."
"Oh my, Xiaoxiao, your cooking is absolutely amazing! Please sit down. You're the hero of today!" Auntie praised repeatedly.
[Ding! Mission complete. Reward: a box of sanitary napkins.]
[Sanitary napkins? I don't need them now, I'll save them for later.]
Ye Xiaoxiao sat down next to her second aunt. Liu Juan, feeling sorry for her eldest daughter-in-law, quickly put several more slices of beef on her plate. "Oh, it's all my fault. My cooking skills are terrible. I'll learn more from Xiaoxiao in the future."
Chen Dashun sat there, his back still aching, and could only lean straight against the back of the chair, not daring to move at all.
Li Yanhong ate with gusto, shoveling rice into her bowl while glancing at the meat and vegetables on the table, her eyes crinkling with laughter.
"Second Uncle and Second Aunt, please don't stand on ceremony, we're all family." Li Chenyang poured a glass of wine for his second uncle.
After several rounds of drinks and several dishes, the meal appeared to be a pleasant affair for both host and guests.
After finishing their meal, Uncle's family prepared to leave. As they were leaving, Aunt took three yuan from her bag and handed it to Chen Dashun.
"Da Shun, this is a small gift from your auntie. Don't think it's too little."
That's about the standard these days. My second aunt gave me not much, but it wasn't a small amount either.
You should know that usually, children only receive about one cent as a New Year's gift.
Li Yanhong felt a little disdainful of the three yuan her aunt had given her, but she didn't say anything to her face. She had thought her aunt would at least give five yuan.
After her second uncle's family left, Li Yanhong muttered to herself as she cleared the dishes in the yard:
"Tsk tsk, my second aunt is so stingy, she only gave me three yuan."
Li Yanhong said this in front of everyone.
Originally, there was nothing wrong with it, but Li Yanhong didn't care at all about her father's current mood.
"What did you say?" Liu Juan was tidying up the table when she heard this and glared at her.
"I said my second aunt gave me too little."
Li Yanhong pouted, "How much money did our family spend preparing this meal? She only gave us three yuan. That's so stingy."
How dare you say that!
Li Jianguo's hand holding the teacup trembled.
"You forgot what you did?"
You know this meal cost a fortune, and look at the things you've done... really..."
