Polly covered her mouth with both hands, her mind going blank for a moment.
"To shine with one last ray of light..."
It was only at this moment that Polly realized the cruelty of the "true side" of the world.
Being a hero is never as easy as it is in Hollywood movies, and no one can be sure that a hero's ending will be as perfect as in novels and films.
These two words themselves represent heaviness.
What would the world be like today without these people?
Simply put, what would the world be like if the US president and the former Soviet president were not human?
As Polly pondered the matter, she felt a chill run down her spine, but she also developed a greater respect for these behind-the-scenes protectors.
Compared to his daughter, Dr. Albansson felt an even greater sense of responsibility.
Looking up at Martin Wilson and noticing the emotion in the old professor's eyes, Hiso Albansson believed that he was looking at the same thing.
“Professor Wilson, I think I can get to work quickly. After all, I, a weapons engineer, am more suited to turning this magical ‘source of power’ into actual power than pure physics.”
Martin chuckled.
"You don't give me, a theoretical physicist, any face at all, but I think we'll become good friends!"
"No, no, Professor, I've studied all your papers. They're not something a pure theorist could write..."
Sisso Albansson was pleased that Professor Wilson was so easygoing; the frequent moves and long periods of seclusion had made him somewhat withdrawn.
"Alright, Hisoka, do you mind if I call you that?"
Hisoka certainly didn't mind, which showed that Professor Wilson had truly approved of him.
"Of course I don't mind, I'm glad you call me that!"
While Hisoka was talking to Martin, his gaze was still not fixed on the "Source of Power" cells in the glass container.
Martin Wilson also noticed this, and far from finding Hisoka impolite, he considered it a sign of Hisoka Albansson's respectability.
To be honest, before coming here, Martin Wilson had never heard of Sisso Albansson.
There are so many national-level PhDs and amateur scientists in North America, and not everyone is as influential as he is.
Even the most humble scientists are inherently proud, much like the mutual disdain among scholars in ancient Chinese literature.
His ability to get this far demonstrates that Hisoka Albansson is truly talented, and his enthusiasm and the burning sense of responsibility he displays make Martin believe that Hisoka is a trustworthy person.
Skill plus attitude is enough to earn Martin's respect.
"Then Hisoka, if you want to get started quickly, come with me. Before we came, the Fountain Cells had been studied for nearly two hundred years, and it wasn't without results."
Martin Wilson continued leading the Albans and his daughter toward a small cubicle deeper into the laboratory, a smile unconsciously creeping onto his lips.
To be able to understand the truth of the world in his twilight years and to contribute his strength to justice is something he can be proud of for the rest of his life.
This justice is not as hollow as the Iraq War launched by the United States; it is a true belief that is worth fighting for by any human being.
Martin couldn't help but recall the night a few days earlier.
That night, the appearance of the Dark Sanctuary completely overturned Martin's worldview.
Although he was originally a Catholic, it was only a family faith, and he had only attended church a handful of times over the decades, except for attending weddings.
Martin generally does not endorse myths and legends that exist outside of modern scientific theories.
When Carl suddenly appeared at his Washington apartment with three other men dressed in casual clothes, his first thought was that he was being burgled.
He, who lives alone, immediately said that he would give money, as long as it didn't harm him or anyone else.
As a result, the guy named Karl said he didn't want any money and claimed to be a knight of the Dark Sanctuary.
The usually calm professor started to panic.
The robber only wanted money; an old guy like him, who looked to be in his seventies or eighties, posed no threat at all.
As long as he cooperates, people generally won't hurt him.
But if four mentally ill people come in, that's a real danger. You have no idea when they might suddenly go insane and start killing.
These men, whom Professor Martin Wilson defined as mentally ill, introduced themselves briefly and then stated that they had been given this assignment on short notice.
There is a severe shortage of manpower, and the level of danger of the mission is unclear. There is no time to waste; Martin needs to be taken to a safe place immediately.
Martin could tell that the four of them understood that he did not trust them, so their "escort" was somewhat coerced.
After the six people got into the car parked downstairs, the driver floored the gas pedal and sped off on the road.
Martin had to admit that the young man driving the car had excellent driving skills and would definitely be better than the original lead if he were to star in Fast & Furious.
In the car, Martin tried his best to be compliant and careful not to provoke Carl and his group of four, but in his heart he was thinking about calling the police or escaping when the opportunity arose.
Soon, they paid the price for Martin's mentality.
The price Martin Wilson paid for a lifetime of guilt.
Because of their excellent performance along the way, the people around them relaxed their attention slightly and instead focused their attention on the surrounding environment, as if some unknown enemy might actually appear.
Their route led towards the suburbs, and when they passed a gas station on the outskirts of the city, they stopped to refuel, where two police cars happened to be.
Martin had almost given up hope because the location was becoming increasingly remote, but unexpectedly, there was always a way out.
What's even more interesting is that, apart from the guy named Carl who got out of the car to refuel...
The three remaining people in the car probably saw the police and all started to get nervous, but strangely, their attention was drawn to their surroundings.
But this suited Martin just the way he wanted. He was originally sandwiched between the two men, but now not only was one of them missing, the other one hadn't even noticed him yet.
Martin slowly made his way to the car door, then, with an agility beyond his years, opened it and escaped.
The young man on the side, caught off guard, failed to grab him.
Martin ran towards the police and screamed for help.
Just when he thought he was saved, he saw a glimpse of the cruel reality of the world.
The police did notice him, but in Martin's view, the air around the police began to distort.
In just 0.5 seconds, he discovered that many terrifying, mantis-shaped monsters had appeared around the gas station.
While he was completely unable to react, a monster's arm blade was about to strike Martin.
A shout of "Come back!" was accompanied by a strong force from behind, which dragged him back from the brink of death.
The one who saved him was a man named Karl, who called himself the Silver Fist Knight of the Dark Sanctuary.
The monster that slashed at Martin had half of its large claw smashed by a punch and then kicked away, but Carl's right arm was hanging down abnormally.
The fractured bone can be seen in the deep scratches that expose the bone.
What followed was a surreal battle beyond Martin's comprehension.
Four people, whom he initially considered mentally ill, now revolve around him as they fend off a large number of monsters.
The brutal, hand-to-hand combat didn't bring Martin any passion or excitement; it only instilled fear within him.
He was tied to his back with a safety rope and nearly fainted during the intense high-speed movement.
Before Martin fainted, he vaguely heard a sharp, piercing, and chilling voice coming from the direction where the police car had just stopped.
"With his right arm gone and so much blood lost, how much strength does the Silver Fist Knight of the Dark Sanctuary still have?"
...
When Martin woke up, he was already in the laboratory building on the ground floor, where people were taking good care of him.
Only after he pressed him repeatedly did he learn the truth.
Of the four men who escorted him, three, including the knight Karl, were killed.
Over time, Martin Wilson gradually came to understand what the Dark Sanctuary was and what the real world was like.
Martin understood the significance of each Dark Templar and realized the consequences of his foolishness.
This made him feel guilty, but it also inspired him to unleash a strong passion for his work.
