Chapter 392 Are you trying to embarrass me?

Chapter 392 Are you trying to embarrass me?

The security guard was stunned by her scolding and didn't dare to provoke this shrew.

After Jin Ping had completely left, the security guard called the secretary's office and said, "Secretary Cui, your mother has passed away."

Cui Xiao closed the last file, looked out the window at the completely dark night and the gradually brightening neon lights, and said calmly, "Okay, I understand."

Cui Xiao got up, rubbing her aching temples, and walked towards the French windows with her arms around her shoulders.

It was that time of year again when every home was lit up, but amidst this heartwarming scene, Cui Xiao felt no warmth whatsoever.

She seemed forever unable to feel this warmth, to the point that she couldn't understand it.

After packing her things, Cui Xiao returned to the hotel.

A hotel is certainly not as comfortable as home, but it's her own private space where she can sleep soundly and peacefully.

In the blink of an eye, another long day has passed.

Mr. Hou is finally back from his vacation, but to adjust to the time difference, he didn't come to the company and went straight home.

In the afternoon, Cui Xiao received a call from General Manager Hou, who said there was a business dinner that evening and asked Cui Xiao to accompany him.

Law firm.

Zhou Mubin glanced at his watch, pinched his brow, and leaned heavily back in his chair. Five minutes later, he casually draped his suit jacket over his arm and prepared to leave.

As he was leaving, Sun Lu saw him and quickly went up to him, asking, "Lawyer Zhou, where are you going?"

Zhou Mubin didn't even glance at her, and said coldly, "Just do your job well, it's none of your business to meddle in other people's business."

Zhou Mubin walked quickly and hurriedly, leaving Sun Lu standing there watching helplessly.

The premier clubhouse in the port city.

A decadent and extravagant den of iniquity.

The light from the crystal chandelier shattered on the tips of Zhou Mubin's custom-made leather shoes. As soon as he stepped onto the wool carpet on the second floor, the laughter coming from the end of the corridor subsided.

The waiter pushed open the door to the private room, and the deafening music seemed to be choked. The room was filled with the scent of perfume mixed with the rich aroma of whiskey, and seven or eight pairs of eyes were fixed on him.

Meanwhile, Liu Xiaojie, sitting at the head of the sofa, casually twirled a wine glass between her fingers, the small diamonds at the corners of her eyes shimmering like hooks in the warm light.

Seeing this, the woman next to Liu Xiaojie spoke first, "Lawyer Zhou has finally arrived. Our Xiaojie has been waiting for ages."

As she spoke, she slammed the empty wine glass onto the coffee table. "We were just chatting with Xiaojie about the funny things that happened when you two were dating."

The crowd immediately started to cheer, and someone nudged Liu Xiaojie's arm, saying, "Xiaojie, Zhou Lu is so good to you. It's obvious he still cares about you."

Liu Xiaojie didn't reply, but looked up at Zhou Mubin, her red lips curving into a soft arc. She reached out and patted the empty seat next to her, "Sit down, I specially saved this seat for you."

Her fingertips traced the velvet on the sofa armrest, the burgundy nail polish making her skin appear even whiter and smoother. As she spoke, her voice rose slightly at the end, "I know you're busy, it's okay if it's a little later, I understand."

Zhou Mubin didn't move. His gaze swept over the mess of empty wine bottles and scattered dice on the table, and his brows furrowed almost imperceptibly.

The question he wanted to ask was stuck in his throat, but before he could even speak, the man with gold-rimmed glasses next to him leaned over and lowered his voice so that Liu Xiaojie could hear, "Lawyer Zhou is a rare busy man. Now that we've met, we must have a good talk about when we're going to be able to attend his wedding."

"That's right, that's right."

The other woman smiled and waved her phone. "The first day Xiaojie came back, paparazzi took pictures of the two of you. I must say, even from behind, you look so well-matched."

These words were like fine needles, pricking Zhou Mubin's temples until they tightened.

He hadn't planned to come in the first place. If he hadn't wanted to know what Cui Xiao had said to her that day, Zhou Mubin wouldn't have bothered making the trip.

Liu Xiaojie seemed oblivious to his impatience. She got up and walked over to him, reaching out to straighten his tie. Her tone was sickeningly soft, "Have you been working all day? Are you tired? Shall I have the waiter make you some tea? Or would you like something else?"

Just as her fingertips were about to touch his collar, Zhou Mubin took a half step back. The movement wasn't obvious, but it was enough to instantly cool down the noise in the room.

"Liu Xiaojie".

Zhou Mubin's voice was even deeper than the air conditioning in the private room, his gaze fixed on her, "I didn't come here to catch up with you."

The moment he said that, everyone around him was stunned.

Liu Xiaojie's smile froze for a moment, then softened. She reached out and took his arm, lightly pinching his forearm with her nails. Her voice was even lower, tinged with grievance, "What's the rush? Let's sit down and talk slowly."

She deliberately pressed herself closer to him, making her perfume even stronger, and the surrounding laughter resumed. Someone whistled, "Oh dear, are they whispering secrets? Should we leave?"

Another person chimed in, "No way, what is it between Lawyer Zhou and Xiaojie that we can't hear?"

These words buzzed around his ears like flies. Zhou Mubin forcefully pulled his hand away from Liu Xiaojie's, his knuckles turning white from the force.

Looking at the calculating glint in Liu Xiaojie's eyes, and then glancing at the amused faces around him, he felt a surge of disgust rising from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.

He hated this kind of scene, and he hated Liu Xiaojie's ambiguous behavior even more.

"I don't have time to beat around the bush with you." Zhou Mubin's voice turned colder, and his eyes lost all warmth. "Either you tell me now, or I'm leaving right now."

The laughter in the private room stopped completely. Everyone could tell that something was wrong. Even Liu Xiaojie couldn't keep up the smile. She gripped her skirt tightly with her fingertips, and a hint of panic flashed in her eyes.

She stood next to Zhou Mubin and said in a very low voice, "Lawyer Zhou, are you trying to embarrass me? If I lose face, then you've come for nothing today."

Zhou Mubin didn't say anything more, he just stared at her, his gaze seeming to pierce through her.

Liu Xiaojie smiled, her eyes crinkling, and pulled Zhou Mubin to sit beside her.

Her voice was as soft as honey, but her gaze quickly swept over the freshly mixed whiskey on the coffee table.

Beneath the lemon slices clinging to the rim of the cup, the white powder had long since dissolved completely.

Liu Xiaojie stood very close to him, and she picked up the glass of whiskey and handed it to Zhou Mubin. "Don't be in such a hurry. I finally managed to get you here to support me. I promise I'll tell you in a bit. Want to have some drinks and relax? When you came in just now, your face was all tense, and you looked exhausted."

When the wine glass was handed to him, Zhou Mubin subconsciously frowned.

Liu Xiaojie seemed to see through his confusion, her fingertips tracing the rim of the glass as she smiled and explained, "What? Afraid I'll drug you? Lawyer Zhou, we've slept together before, do you think I'm lusting after you?"

As she spoke, she handed him the wine glass, and with her other hand, she quietly placed it on his arm and gently squeezed it. "Tch, you really don't believe me? Fine, if you don't want to drink, then let's drink something else."

Liu Xiaojie's frankness dispelled Zhou Mubin's doubts.

He reached out and took the glass. When his fingertips touched the glass, it was slightly cooler than room temperature. Liu Xiaojie's hand hadn't left the bottom of the glass yet when she gently pushed it, her tone slightly coquettish, "I'll have a drink with you."
