Chapter 385 Cui Xiao, Only You
As night deepened, Cui Xiao lay on the soft bed in the guest room. Although she tried her best to resist the drowsiness, the intense fatigue still made her drift off to sleep.
After an unknown amount of time, the door was gently pushed open a crack, and a tall figure walked in, illuminated by the dim light of the corridor.
Zhou Mubin held a thermometer in his hand and walked very quietly, afraid of waking her.
He walked to the bedside and, by the moonlight streaming in from the window, looked at Cui Xiao's sleeping profile.
Her brows were still slightly furrowed, a faint blush remained on her cheeks, and her breathing was shallow yet tinged with unease, as if she were having a nightmare.
Zhou Mubin slowed his breathing and carefully reached out, intending to gently lift her arm to take her temperature. But the moment his fingertips touched Cui Xiao's wrist, Cui Xiao suddenly opened her eyes.
In the darkness, Cui Xiao only saw a blurry black shadow leaning closer to her, its hand landing on her wrist, and a wave of fear instantly washed over her.
She instinctively thought Zhou Mubin was going to do something to her, and she abruptly pulled her hand back. "Zhou Mubin, what do you want to do?" Zhou Mubin was startled by her sudden reaction, and he almost dropped the thermometer in his hand.
He quickly sat up straight, his voice extremely soft, "What do you think I'm going to do? Am I plotting something?"
But Cui Xiao was on edge, gripping the bed sheet tightly, her eyes full of vigilance.
Seeing the distrust in her eyes, Zhou Mubin felt a surge of irritation, but he patiently explained, "I just came to check your temperature."
He held up the thermometer in his hand and waved it in the moonlight. "Do you believe me now?"
Cui Xiao's gaze fell on the thermometer, and her fear lessened slightly, but she still dared not let her guard down.
Her tone was wary, "Actually, Zhou Lu didn't need to make the trip. I'm not a three-year-old who doesn't even know when he has a fever."
Zhou Mubin sneered and took a few steps forward. "If Miss Cui is so capable, how come she didn't even know she had a high fever for a whole day?"
He lowered his voice, looked at Cui Xiao's tense body, and softened his tone, "If I hadn't come to find you, you probably would have passed out from the fever. How would you have had the strength to stand here and act tough with me?"
Even though he said that, Cui Xiao still didn't really want to spend time with him alone in a room late at night, a man and a woman alone together.
She felt it was dangerous, and she also felt it shouldn't be like this.
Seeing her stubbornness, Zhou Mubin's patience gradually wore thin, and his tone grew colder, "Raise your arm."
He took a step forward, and an oppressive aura instantly descended upon her. "If Miss Cui were to burn herself into a little fool, she would surely be a beautiful little fool. At that point, she probably wouldn't be able to refuse me anymore."
Seeing the fierce look in his eyes, Cui Xiao felt a pang of panic. She reached for the thermometer, intending to take her temperature herself.
But Zhou Mubin had already acted first, bending down and reaching out his hand so quickly that she didn't have time to react.
He held her shoulder with one hand to prevent her from struggling, and gently pinched her wrist with the other hand, clamping the thermometer between his fingers.
After that, there were no further actions.
Cui Xiaosong breathed a sigh of relief.
In fact, she knew in her heart that Zhou Mubin wouldn't go so far as to take advantage of her vulnerability.
Over the years, what woman has he not wanted?
Most women willingly climb into his bed; he doesn't need to force them. He certainly wouldn't force her.
Once you calm down, even the air becomes quiet.
The thermometer showed a temperature of 37.8℃. Although the fever hadn't completely subsided, it was a significant drop from before. Zhou Mubin breathed a sigh of relief, put away the thermometer, and looked at Cui Xiao's indifferent and rejecting expression, his irritation intensified.
He stood up. "Cui Xiao, I wouldn't have any ulterior motives towards a patient. Get some rest."
After saying that, he didn't linger and turned around to gently close the door.
The next morning, the morning light streamed in through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the guest room, casting dappled shadows on the floor.
Cui Xiao rubbed her temples; the discomfort had disappeared. She slowly opened her eyes, and as she raised her wrist, she remembered everything that had happened last night.
Zhou Mubin only came in that one time, and afterwards, he didn't harass her again.
When Cui Xiao came out of the guest room, she was stunned.
Zhou Mubin was dressed in simple home clothes, with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing his well-defined muscles. He was focused on placing the freshly fried toast onto a plate.
The sunlight fell on him, softening his usually cold and hard features, and revealing a touch of homey warmth.
Two breakfasts were already laid out on the table: golden fried eggs, crispy toast, fresh fruit salad, and a glass of steaming milk. Everything was arranged neatly and exquisitely, looking very appetizing.
Cui Xiao stood there, her eyes full of surprise. She really didn't expect that someone like Zhou Mubin, who was used to being in control and had been pampered since childhood, would actually cook for himself.
At least, in the eleven years that she had known him, Cui Xiao had never known that he possessed this skill.
Zhou Mubin seemed to notice her gaze, turned around to look at her, a very faint smile appeared on his lips, and his tone was gentler than usual, "Awake? Breakfast is just ready, come and eat."
Cui Xiao snapped out of her daze, slowly walked to the dining table, but didn't sit down. She just stood there, her eyes scrutinizing, "These...you made them?"
"Otherwise what?"
Zhou Mubin placed the last glass of milk in front of her, his tone carrying a hint of barely perceptible anticipation, "Try it, how does it taste?"
He rarely cooks for others; no, to be precise, this is the first time Zhou Mubin has ever cooked for someone else.
Looking at the exquisite breakfast in front of her, and then at Zhou Mubin's seemingly gentle gaze, Cui Xiao felt a strange emotion rising in her heart.
She recalled the girls Zhou Mubin had dated before, "I guess Zhou Lu's skill is also used to pursue women."
Zhou Mubin's smile faded slightly, his gaze darkened, and he walked up to her. "Women all like men who can cook?"
He paused, then added, "And Miss Cui? Does she like it too?"
Cui Xiao looked up and met his dark, deep eyes, feeling inexplicably nervous.
The next second, Cui Xiao looked away, pulled out a chair, and sat down.
Without saying a word, she picked up her fork, gently forked a piece of fruit, and put it in her mouth. The sweet taste spread in her mouth; it was indeed delicious.
Zhou Mubin sat opposite her, watching her cautious demeanor, a faint smile playing on his lips.
He put down his knife and fork, his tone slightly tentative, "How does it taste?"
Cui Xiao paused, looked up at him, then quickly looked down again, her voice indifferent, "Pretty good. It seems Zhou Lu has shown off his culinary skills to many of his exes."
After saying that, she stopped talking and quickened her pace of eating, wanting to end this awkward breakfast time as soon as possible.
Seeing her distant attitude, Zhou Mubin sat down, picked up his knife and fork, and casually asked, "Cui Xiao, is it only you?"
