Nian'an went to take the exam and passed with flying colors.

Shen Nian'an studied diligently in Jiangnan for three years, making great progress in his studies. Finally, the day arrived for him to go to the capital to participate in the imperial examination. On the eve of his departure, Shen Jiye and Lady Liu packed his bags and gave him many instructions.

“Nian’an, there are many talented people in the capital, and the competition for the imperial examination is fierce, but you don’t need to be too nervous. Just do your best.” Shen Jiye patted his son’s shoulder, his tone steady. “No matter the result, you are our pride. But you must remember that studying is for understanding principles, and entering officialdom is for serving the people. You must not let fame and fortune cloud your judgment.”

Liu held her son's hand, her eyes reddening, and said, "Nian'an, you must take good care of yourself while you're away from home. Eat regularly and don't stay up late studying and hurt your health. Wear more clothes when it's cold and take precautions against heatstroke when it's hot. If you encounter any difficulties, be sure to write back immediately." She also packed her son's favorite snacks and commonly used medicines into his luggage, wishing she could pack up the whole family for him to take with him.

Shen Jifang also came to see him off, and prepared many books, writing brushes, ink, paper and inkstones for her nephew: "Nian'an, you are exceptionally intelligent and hardworking. Your aunt believes that you will definitely pass the imperial examination with flying colors. These books were read by your grandfather back then. Take them with you, and they may give you some inspiration. When you get to the capital, be careful with your words and actions, be friendly to others, and do not quarrel with anyone."

Looking at his family's concerned eyes, Shen Nian'an was deeply moved. He solemnly kowtowed and said, "Father, Mother, Aunt, please rest assured, your son will remember your teachings and live up to your expectations. I will do my best on this trip to the capital, and I will return safely regardless of success or failure."

The following morning, Shen Nian'an bid farewell to his family and embarked on his journey to the capital. He traveled day and night, braving wind and rain, never daring to slacken his pace. Upon arriving in the capital, he did not wander around but instead found a quiet inn to stay in, continuing his intensive study, organizing his knowledge, and adjusting his mindset.

On the day of the imperial examination, Shen Nian'an remained calm and composed. In the examination hall, his thoughts flowed freely, and he wrote with ease, integrating his years of learning to produce a series of profound and beautifully written essays. His policy essay, "On the Essentials of Governing the Country," in particular, drew upon his personal experience of disaster relief in the south to propose the view that "the people are the foundation of the state; to govern the country, one must first govern the people; officials are role models; to govern the people, one must first govern the officials." His arguments were well-supported, clearly organized, and imbued with a deep concern for the country and its people, as well as a pragmatic spirit.

The results of the provincial examination were announced, and Shen Nian'an achieved outstanding results, qualifying him to participate in the palace examination. During the palace examination, facing the new emperor's questions, Shen Nian'an remained calm and composed, answering fluently and confidently. He not only demonstrated profound knowledge but also offered many unique insights into people's livelihood, governance, and military affairs, deeply impressing the new emperor.

Ultimately, Shen Nian'an achieved the highest score in the imperial examination and was appointed as a compiler in the Hanlin Academy, responsible for drafting documents and compiling historical records for the imperial court.

When the news reached Jiangnan, Shen Jiye's family and Shen Jifang were overjoyed. Shen Jiye stood in the courtyard, gazing towards the capital, his eyes filled with pride and satisfaction: "Good lad! He hasn't disgraced the Shen family! Our Shen family has produced another top scholar!" Liu Shi wept with joy, quickly preparing incense and candles to worship their ancestors and thank them for their blessings. Shen Jifang also smiled and said, "Nian'an's success is truly an honor for the Shen family. Now we can rest assured."
