Chapter 4 Audition 2

But today, Li Ruan appeared without makeup, and wearing this cheongsam, I'm not bragging, but she looks better than 99% of the female stars in the entertainment industry. The remaining 1% is just to prevent her from getting arrogant!

"Alright, alright, hurry up and look at the script, or you'll mess up your performance later." Calm down, and stop radiating your irresistible charm.

Li Ruan: ...Did you mess up? No, no, no, that role is mine!

Xiao Yuan took number 34 in line and thought she would have to wait a long time, but the inside was calling numbers very quickly. In no time, it was her turn. There were four other people called at the same time as her.

Li Ruan handed the script to Qiao Na and walked confidently into the audition room.

Several other auditioning actors also came in. Li Ruan glanced at them. Director Qu's dramas were always in high demand. Even for a small role as the fifth female lead, two second-tier actresses, one third-tier actress, and the other one was probably a newcomer whom she didn't recognize.

In the room, five people were sitting in a row behind the table. She recognized Director Qu. The other names on the signs were producer, screenwriter, investor, and TV King Qiao Zhuo.

Qu Sheng's expression was somewhat serious. Seeing the group enter, he said directly, "They're all auditioning for Song Sheng, so let's begin."

Number 31 introduced himself as a newcomer who had just graduated from the Beijing Film Academy. He was going to play the scene where Song Sheng was sold into the Paramount Ballroom. It was his first time participating in such an important audition, so he was a little reserved. He even forgot his lines halfway through the performance, so Director Qu called him to stop. "Alright, go back and wait for news."

The little girl ran away crying.

Next up was Bai Tang, a second-tier actress. She introduced herself with ease and without any restraint, "Director, I chose the scene where Song Sheng risks his life to deliver the message. Could you find someone to act with me?"

Acting without props can better showcase an actor's skills, but if he needs someone to act alongside him, Director Qu will not refuse.

"Can."

Bai Tang smiled and asked Qiao Zhuo, "Teacher Qiao, then I'll trouble you."

Qiao Zhuo smiled and nodded: "No trouble at all, since you're my junior sister."

Li Ruan glanced at the two of them. Qiao Zhuo showed no sign of reluctance. It seemed that the two were not only from the same company, but also had a close relationship in private.

Bai Tang was also wearing a cheongsam today, with beautiful bright red lips and heavy makeup, which could be said to be very much in line with the attire of a dancer in the 1940s.

The two who hadn't auditioned yet both looked rather grim, because usually in this situation, Bai Tang had already basically secured the role.

Qiao Zhuo had already stood up and walked to Bai Tang, and the two began their performance.

Song Sheng knew that his superior's identity had been exposed and he would soon be arrested. He risked his life to send a message, but Hu Yushu had just received the intelligence and had to send it out, otherwise it would affect the war in the north. He stood in front of the transmitter and calmly sent the message.

When Song Sheng arrived, he urged Hu Yushu to leave immediately, but Hu Yushu said, "I was prepared to die for this path long before I embarked on it. If I could exchange my life for the safety of millions of compatriots, I would die without regret."

Go back quickly. If anything happens to me, go into silence and wait patiently to be awakened again.

The radio transmitter started ringing again. Song Sheng was in a panic. She knew very well which was more important, the safety of tens of thousands of people or the life and death of one person, but she just didn't want Hu Yushu to die.

Over the years, she had grown fond of this calm and intelligent superior, and she wanted him to live peacefully!

She never even showed him the slightest bit of love. With the country in turmoil and the world in peril, her life hanging by a thread, how could she possibly let him have any worries?

She knew he was doing the right thing, so after a moment of panic, she calmed down amidst the beeping sounds and began to set up the room.

She also proved with her actions that she would not leave and would stay by Hu Yushu's side.

Hu Yushu didn't let her leave again. The intelligence he had was too important. If the people who were to arrest them arrived early, having someone by his side could help him hold them off for a while.

But his vision blurred...

Finally, the telegram stopped, and after a while, the other side sent back a telegram with only two words: Received.

Hu Yushu pulled Song Sheng away.

But it was too late; a truckload of Japanese soldiers came downstairs.

In a moment of inspiration, Song Sheng opened the back window and let Hu Yushu leave through it. "Yushu, I can't escape. Please live on with my share of the burden. You must live until the darkness fades and the dawn breaks in China. See for me the beautiful land of China after the wolves have been driven away."

She rushed over from the Paramount Ballroom, wearing a cheongsam and high heels. Given her already poor physical strength, running away with Hu Yushu would only be a burden.

Hu Yushu burst into tears instantly. "No, we'll go together." He knew she was saying this on purpose to make him feel guilty, but how could he abandon her?

"You taught me that we can make sacrifices, but not pointless ones. Hurry up and leave, stop dawdling!"

After saying that, she immediately pushed Hu Yushu away, her eyes filled with determination!

Li Ruan felt that this scene didn't really showcase the actors' acting skills, but she understood why Bai Tang chose this scene.

As the top courtesan, Song Sheng's appearance must be outstanding, but Bai Tang's looks are only average. She can't express the charming smile of Song Sheng. It's better to play to one's strengths and avoid one's weaknesses.

Soon it was her turn to go on stage.

She had been sitting on a chair in the corner of the room waiting. After number 33 finished performing, she stood up gracefully, raised her left hand and made a gesture of holding a glass. She swayed her slender waist and walked to the center of the room. Then she stopped in front of an empty chair, raised her eyebrows slightly, and smiled at the people at the head of the table: "General Huang, it is my great honor to have your favor. I would like to ask you to do me the honor of drinking with me."

She said "please do me the honor," but her tone lacked respect. Her casualness carried a hint of charm and allure. The lines were nothing out of the ordinary, yet she spoke them so beautifully that even the editor, who had been engrossed in writing, couldn't help but look up and meet Li Ruan's worldly yet affectionate eyes.

Ignoring everyone else's reactions, Li Ruan continued her act, handing over a wine glass that wasn't even in her hand.

Director Qu subconsciously replied, "It is my honor to share a drink with Miss Song."

Li Ruan reached out her empty hand, and even though she had nothing in her hand, a clinking sound rang out in the room, just like the sound of two wine glasses colliding.

After finishing her drink, she touched the hair by her ear, a casual yet alluring smile on her face, her eyes slightly upturned like hooks that beckoned to the soul, stealing the soul from the person opposite her.

The next second, as if she had really been pulled, she tumbled into the chair, letting out a startled cry in a soft, delicate voice, "General~"

Director Qu, who was at the head of the table, immediately called "cut".
