Chapter 5 Returning to My Original Family in the Urban Village
The barrage of comments was full of complaints about her being on the verge of losing her composure, but Lin Muyan felt a secret sense of satisfaction.
However, she quickly calmed down and was not blinded by the gold nugget.
This was too fantastical; she still couldn't quite believe it.
When she was three years old, she carried this wooden shovel almost every day to dig in the sand, and she also used it to dig up earthworms and other small insects.
Her adoptive mother thought it was dirty and not a game that a rich family's child should play, so she put the wooden shovel away and never let her play with it again.
If what the comments say is true, then she should have found out much earlier.
Lin Muyan thought for a moment, then found a patch of loose soil and dug several more times, but she didn't find anything else.
"It was a lie after all," she thought, tossing the wooden shovel carelessly into the box and continuing on her way.
There's no way such a magical thing could exist in this world, the comments section teased her.
However, thanks to the comments, she unexpectedly stumbled upon a gold nugget.
Ten thousand yuan may not be enough to accomplish much, but even a small amount can be valuable. At least for now, it seems she's quite lucky; she's struck gold as soon as she stepped out the door.
After several transfers and taking the wrong bus several times, Lin Muyan finally boarded a bus bound for the urban village.
After leaving the city center filled with skyscrapers and passing several office buildings, just after passing a garden and an artificial lake, the surrounding scenery suddenly changed drastically. In Lin Muyan's eyes, the most crowded and chaotic place she had ever seen in her life appeared.
She was so shocked she couldn't speak. This place was only a dozen kilometers away from the city center, not some remote suburb, but the environment was completely different from other parts of S City. Was this really S City?
The buildings here are incredibly crowded, mostly dingy tenement buildings with dirty facades. The densely packed windows look very oppressive, and you can imagine how stifling it must be to live behind those windows.
The streets are filled with a strong local atmosphere. Instead of the various luxury cars, bicycles and electric bikes are now the main vehicles coming and going. Occasionally, a car will pass by, but most of them are older, ordinary sedans. Wealthy people would not come to this kind of place.
The air was filled with the stench of garbage, and the filth and disorder made Lin Muyan frown.
The old man sitting next to her seemed to have noticed something and sneered.
"Young lady, you look down on this place but still took a bus here? Don't be fooled by how dilapidated this urban village looks; quite a few elites live here. The rent is cheap, and it's close to the office buildings in the city center, making it very popular with young people from other places who come to work hard."
"Are you looking to rent a place? I have a small attic room available for rent. Would you like to take a look? I'll give you a discount."
Lin Muyan waved her hands repeatedly, staring intently at the small piece of paper in her hand. The address of her family of origin was in an old building in an urban village, which seemed to be a two-bedroom apartment.
Besides her parents, she has an older brother and a younger sister who is still in elementary school.
I heard that my older brother has gone out to work and only comes back to stay occasionally. My younger sister is in elementary school and is too small to take up a bed.
If it's a two-bedroom apartment, she should be able to have her own room, right? Sharing a room with her younger sister would at least give her some private space.
After meeting them and staying for a while, she should go out and find a job to earn money.
I probably won't need to come back here often in the future.
Thinking this way, Lin Muyan felt a little better.
Without the support of the Shen family, she will have to rely on her own efforts to live a good life. If her family of origin is easy to get along with, she can help them. But if they are a group of unreasonable and uncivilized people, she doesn't need to get close to them.
It wasn't her fault that she was switched. Now that things have come to this, she has accepted reality. As for the rest of the journey, she'll just have to take it one step at a time.
The bus stopped, and Lin Muyan stood in the noisy street, her expensive designer clothes making her look out of place.
Suddenly, a middle-aged man in front of her held a photo and stared intently at Lin Muyan.
The next second, his face showed excitement, and he ran towards Lin Muyan in three steps. When he reached Lin Muyan, his eyes were already red, as if tears were about to fall at any moment.
"Child, are you Mu Yan?"
The middle-aged man stopped in front of Lin Muyan, touching the uneven corner of his clothes, looking somewhat uneasy and cautious.
Lin Muyan had already guessed his identity. She opened her mouth, but ultimately didn't call out "Dad".
She had called Shen Dong "Dad" for twenty years, and now she couldn't bring herself to suddenly call a stranger "father."
Lin Jianbin nervously wiped his hands, reaching out to help Lin Muyan with her things, and said as he did so:
"Mu Yan, I am your father, Lin Jianbin. The Shen family may not have any photos of me."
This was considered explaining the situation to Lin Muyan. It was clear that he was very nervous and somewhat at a loss.
He didn't know how to get along with this daughter he had been separated from for twenty years, but he felt close to her at first sight; she was a lovable child.
Lin Muyan looked at the somewhat timid and honest-looking man in front of her, and she didn't know what to feel.
She had imagined her biological father: he might be an alcoholic, a gambler with a foul mouth, or a cold and chauvinistic man, but he was clearly none of those.
She actually saw a cautious attempt to please in this father's eyes.
Lin Muyan's voice choked in her throat, and she ultimately didn't say anything. She also dodged her father's hand and took her things herself.
Lin Jianbin's eyes dimmed, but he forced a smile and said to Lin Muyan:
"Let's go home with Dad."
Lin Muyan nodded and followed her father step by step toward the new home she had no expectations for.
[Lin's father rarely appears; this poor middle-aged man lives such a pathetic life.]
Yes, we always hear about men abusing their wives, but rarely about women. Lin's father is abused daily by his vicious mother, yet he doesn't divorce her. He's incredibly tolerant.
[Like attracts like. Someone who lives with a wicked mother for so many years is definitely not a good person. Don't be fooled by his honest appearance.]
The comments section is saying Lin's father was a victim of domestic violence? And every day? What shocking revelation is this?
Lin Muyan was somewhat skeptical. Her biological father looked quite robust, though he appeared older, with a hunched back and a weathered appearance. He was able-bodied and strong; how could he endure daily domestic violence from a woman without fighting back? Was he some kind of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle?
The comments section started talking about the Lin family, where Shen Jiaojiao grew up.
[I'm so excited! I'll soon see where our Jiaojiao grew up. It's a den of wolves, but it's the first time I've ever seen it. I want to see what kind of dragon's den and tiger's lair it was that tormented our Jiaojiao like that.]
[Hey, we'll see that wicked mom soon! Is she some kind of nine-headed monster? I'm going to tear her apart later!]
Count me in. I've been wanting to meet that vicious woman for ages. If that green tea b*tch hadn't left the Shen family, we wouldn't have had a chance to see the Lin family's true colors.
Lin Muyan was actually a little nervous and uneasy. Shen Jiaojiao had reminded her that her birth mother was not a good person, but said that her father was a good person, and she thought so too.
If her birth mother is truly a vicious shrew, how should she face it?
At this moment, Lin Muyan suddenly felt a little regretful. She regretted that she had always received a top-notch education and had excellent manners in the Shen family. She had always strictly demanded of herself in private, never doing anything out of line or saying anything vulgar.
Even now, she's not very good at arguing. Back in school, some classmates who resented the rich would make fun of her and hurl nasty insults. She wanted to retaliate, but she realized she was completely inept at arguing and cursing.
If she runs into her own mother later and she immediately tries to intimidate her, how should she deal with it?
Judging from the way the biological father is, he's probably a henpecked husband who's all bark and no bite, and he might not actually side with her.
