Chapter 28
Fortunately, Rongxun knew that this thing was rare and hard to come by, so he didn't insist on finding it.
Jin Yifei recalled the scene in court where the young man who saved Yu Wan was highly skilled and agile, clearly not an ordinary martial artist. Moreover, he seemed to have a close relationship with Yu Wan.
"Madam Yu, the young man who saved you in court is highly skilled in martial arts. Do you know his identity and background?"
Just as Yu Wan was about to make up an excuse, she heard a boy's gloomy and displeased voice coming from outside the door.
"What does Young Master Jin suspect about me?"
He stood firmly in the doorway, one hand clutching his abdomen and the other hanging naturally at his side. His cold eyes scanned every corner of the room before finally settling on Yu Wan's face.
"The matter is settled, you can go back now."
Yu Wan sensed anger between his brows, but couldn't pinpoint the reason.
Jin Yifei was not as open-minded as usual; his words were full of profound meaning.
"Young master, you misunderstand. If it weren't for your strong support in court, the consequences would have been unimaginable. You are Madam Yu's friend, so I would also like to be friends with you. Would that be alright?"
He Jing rolled his eyes at him. "No need. I'm just an unknown worker at the restaurant. I'm not worthy to be Mr. Jin's friend."
"?" Yu Wan looked back and forth between the two, unable to understand, really unable to understand.
Unexpectedly, the boy suddenly glared at her.
Yu Wan was even more confused. What on earth was going on?
The others looked bewildered, unsure of what was going on.
Finally, Rong Xun stepped in to smooth things over, explaining with a smile.
"Ladies and gentlemen, he is the grandson of an old friend of mine. His family has been law-abiding citizens for eighteen generations and would never have any intention of harming anyone. This boy was recently ambushed by thugs and was seriously injured. Fortunately, he was rescued and taken in by Madam Yu, and that's how the two of them met."
Yu Wan thought to herself, no wonder Doctor Rong was able to be invited over. Zhao Gu had clearly said that his master would not easily come out of seclusion.
She suddenly remembered something and looked at Madam Zhu.
"Madam, may I use the kitchen? I'd like to make a bowl of noodles."
Upon hearing this, everyone looked at her with sparkling eyes.
Zhu Zhifeng swallowed hard. "I want some too, Awan. Can you make me an extra bowl?"
Yu Wan smiled and nodded: "Of course, no problem."
Everyone looked at her with envy; it must be so nice to be a patient!
Rong Xun coughed twice deliberately, giving He Jing a meaningful look.
He Jing glanced at him, turned and left, which made Rong Xun furious, his beard bristling and eyes wide with anger, cursing and swearing.
Lord Zhu shamelessly voiced everyone's thoughts, "Madam Yu, we know you've been working hard lately. Could we try your cooking? We only had your grilled skewers on New Year's Eve last time, and we still crave more. We've heard that your restaurant is offering more and more delicious food, but we haven't had a chance to try it yet."
Yu Wan saw the sun rising and realized it was indeed time for breakfast.
"Okay, then I'll make a little more."
Everyone was beaming with joy; they were finally able to have a good meal.
The deliciousness of braised noodles lies not only in the quality of the braised sauce, but also in the quality of the noodles themselves.
Everyone has slightly different kneading techniques, such as different water-to-flour ratios and different water temperatures, which will result in different textures of noodles.
Every chef has their own habits. Even apprentices taught by the same master will produce different dishes and have their own unique characteristics.
Even when one person makes dishes that taste very similar, there will still be subtle differences.
Yu Wan skillfully cut noodles of the right thickness with a kitchen knife, finishing in one go. She glanced up casually and found everyone quietly watching her from the kitchen doorway.
She thought they were starving and couldn't wait, so she laughed and said, "It'll be ready soon, we can eat it as soon as it's cooked."
Lord Zhu smiled and said, "We're not in a hurry, take your time."
Madam Zhu asked, "Husband, didn't you say that our kitchen knife is difficult to use? It can't even cut scallions properly. But look at it in Madam Yu's hands, how is it any different from a divine weapon?"
Lord Zhu's lips twitched: "I...I don't know either."
Zhu Zhifeng looked at her with admiration, "The sound of Awan cutting noodles is so beautiful. This dynamic melody is so uplifting."
Jin Yifei nodded in agreement: "I only knew that Madam Yu's grilled skewers were amazing, but I didn't know that her culinary skills were not limited to barbecue. Yesterday I saw a wall in her restaurant with many dish names on it, so they must all be delicious."
Rong Xun exclaimed in surprise, "What dish names? A whole wall of dish names? How many are there?"
The group was chatting away when suddenly they were pushed off balance by a strong force from behind.
Yu Wan had already scooped out the noodles and put them in a basin of warm water to rinse. Just as she was about to pick them up, the boy snatched them away.
He Jing held a bowl of noodles in one hand and a bowl of braised meat in the other, and said in a low voice...
"Finish eating and leave here as soon as possible."
Yu Wan, puzzled, asked in a low voice:
"What's wrong? Have your enemies found this place? If you can't beat them, you'd better run away quickly, or they'll catch you."
He Jing glanced at Jin Yifei, then carried the two basins out.
Following the aroma, everyone went to the dining room. Each person took their own bowl, picked out noodles, poured several large spoonfuls of meat sauce over the noodles, and then stirred them with chopsticks to fully blend the noodles and sauce.
After a few bites, everyone was very satisfied.
Yu Wan smiled without saying a word. She was eating quite well in prison, while these people probably hadn't had a proper meal in days.
Of course, her braised noodles were also delicious.
As she silently watched the crowd of supporters, a bowl of noodles appeared before her.
He Jing placed the bowl and chopsticks in front of her, "What are you standing there for? If you don't eat now, they'll snatch it all away."
Yu Wan couldn't help but ask in a low voice, "Who upset you? Why are you so angry?"
He Jing said coldly, "Nobody provoked me." He then silently ate the noodles in his bowl.
The group enjoyed a hearty meal and repeatedly praised Yu Wan's culinary skills.
After exchanging a few polite words, Yu Wan expressed her intention to leave.
Now that things have calmed down, my mother and brother are at home, and the restaurant has been closed for a few days, so we can't wait any longer.
The county magistrate and his family of four bid a reluctant farewell to the three.
Along the way, Rong Xun seemed to have a million questions, pestering Yu Wan to chat.
For example, how big is that snow mountain? Besides American ginseng, what other rare herbs are there? Have you ever seen any herbs before? They practically wanted to bring out the Compendium of Materia Medica for Yu Wan to identify.
Yu Wan answered all her questions out of respect, but people's patience is limited, and she really wanted to take a nap.
Rong Xun then posed another question: "The He family boy said you're very good at cooking, have you ever considered medicinal cuisine? I think that's a direction too. If you don't know anything about it, I can help you. I'm not doing this for money, just leave me some food."
The boy sitting opposite him, who had been silently resting with his eyes closed, opened them irritably and glared at him.
"This is so annoying, can you please say less?"
Rong Xun opened his mouth, but then truly stopped speaking.
Yu Wan was curious. These two people were old enough to be grandfather and grandson, yet the younger generation had such a bad attitude, while the older generation became obedient after being scolded once.
Isn't this relationship a bit reversed?
However, developing medicinal cuisine is indeed a good idea.
Anyway, things finally calmed down, and when they arrived at the restaurant entrance, the group got out of the car.
Rong Xun was an impatient person with a bit of a childish temper. Without saying a word, he wanted to drag Yu Wan up the mountain.
"Take me to find American ginseng quickly."
He Jing gave him a cold glance and said, "What's the rush? Go if you want."
Rong Xun felt wronged: "I'm already so old, who knows if I'll see the sun rise tomorrow? Of course I'm anxious."
Seeing that he looked radiant and could easily live another twenty years, Yu Wan realized he had used a self-inflicted injury ruse.
"Mr. Rong, my restaurant needs to open tomorrow. Please let me prepare properly, okay? Don't worry, I will definitely not go back on my promise to you."
Once inside, Rongxun stood in front of the recipe wall and didn't move, silently looking at it for a long time.
Yu Wan noticed that the tables, chairs, and benches were spotless, indicating that her mother and younger brother had cleaned them.
But they weren't home. Where did they go?
Remembering Lord Zhu's words, she wondered if Qian Jindai had any other accomplices and whether he would retaliate against her.
She leaned closer to He Jing and whispered, "Will my mother and A-Cheng be alright?"
He Jing pointed to the floor and said with certainty, "There wasn't a single footprint before we came in, so they left on their own. They even wiped the floor all the way to the door before they left and locked the door."
Yu Wan breathed a sigh of relief, realizing that she had been too hasty and lost her composure. Hearing what he said, she felt that it made a lot of sense.
“You’re right, I noticed that too. Nothing in the house has been touched, and it’s tidy and clean. Even if someone took them away, it wouldn’t be here; they’d probably be outside. Let’s wait a bit longer; they might be back soon.”
The two spent more than an hour preparing ingredients in the kitchen, finally washing and preparing all the basic ingredients needed for the next day.
During the meal, Rongxun ordered a golden fried rice with egg. After finishing it, he went out for a stroll, saying he wanted to go for a walk in the mountains.
With only two people left in the restaurant, Yu Wan focused intently on finishing up the remaining tasks.
She observed that He Suzhi had a dark face ever since he woke up, and she didn't know who he was angry with.
He hadn't met Jin Yifei many times, so they shouldn't be familiar with each other. If they weren't familiar, they probably wouldn't have any grudges against each other, so it's probably not directed at him.
As for the Zhu family of three, they had even less contact, so it probably wasn't them.
The Divine Physician Rong?
Although He Suzhi treated him very badly, it seemed that the two had a close relationship. If they really had a grudge, they wouldn't have interacted in this way.
So she figured it out; it was aimed at her.
She had just finished cleaning up, so she washed the rag, wrung it out, and hung it to dry.
"Let's have a talk."
He Jing was taken aback for a moment, then silently followed her out of the kitchen and stood by the table looking at the girl's serious face.
"What should we talk about?"
Yu Wan sat down and said, "Please sit down too. You've had a tough time these past few days. I definitely wouldn't have made it through without your help. We've known each other for a while now, and you've saved me several times. I've also saved you in return, and even taken you in. Of course, you've definitely done more, because every time you saved me, your old injuries flared up again."
He Jing looked confused. "What exactly are you trying to say?"
Yu Wan took out a piece of paper and placed it in front of him. "This is the contract we signed. Keep it safe, and then you can go wherever you want."
He Jing stared at her intently, his thoughts racing, and his voice turned cold.
"You want to kick me out?"
