Rong Lianhu shook his head and found that the cucumber vines on the ground were indeed gone. After thinking for a moment, he said to Rong Zhiyuan, "Go play with your brothers. Don't trample the vegetable garden here."
Rong Zhiyuan asked in confusion, "Then why doesn't Dad go back?"
Rong Lianhu glared at him: "I still need to bring your sister here to keep your mother company, otherwise she will cry if she leaves her mother."
Rong Zhiyuan pursed his lips, said "Oh," and left.
Fu Ya realized that her husband was deliberately sending their son away, and looked at Rong Lianhu with a questioning gaze.
Rong Lianhu didn't speak, but gestured for Fu Ya to come closer. Then he carried his daughter to another cucumber vine that Fu Ya had pulled up.
When Rong Jiaojiao saw it, she tried to grab it again, but Rong Lianhu held her just like before, making it impossible for her to reach it. Then, the cucumber vine disappeared into thin air right in front of them.
Both of them watched their daughter nervously, fearing that something might happen to her. But they saw their daughter kicking her short legs, giggling, revealing two white spots on her gums, and drool flowing down her face unrestrainedly.
The idea of a fairy performing magic tricks simultaneously popped into the couple's minds, causing them great anxiety.
Looking at the other vegetable seedlings that Fu Ya had pulled up, the two whispered to each other for a while and decided to try again.
Fu Ya piled the pulled-out seedlings and melon vines in front of Rong Jiaojiao. Rong Lianhu hugged her and reached her hand towards the seedlings, but pulled her away just before she could touch them, making sure she didn't touch them.
Fu Ya watched all of this nervously, her heart pounding.
Rong Jiaojiao also had a short temper. After failing to get it several times, she got angry and yelled. With her hands waving, all the withered seedlings on the ground disappeared, and only then did the little girl happily giggle.
Fu Ya covered her mouth, looked at her daughter who was laughing heartily, and then at her husband. For a moment, she didn't know how to express her inner thoughts.
Having weathered many storms, Rong Lianhu said, "If you have anything to say, we can talk about it when we get home."
Fu Ya nodded, then turned to Hu Xiaoxiao and said, "Sister-in-law Hu, it's getting dark soon, and there are a lot of mosquitoes. We need to go back now. Are you coming back?"
Hu Xiaoxiao straightened up: "I'm going back too. There's so little land, even grass can't grow, there's nothing to take care of."
Rong Lianhu shouted, "Zhigao and Zhiyuan, are you going back or not?"
Two voices came from the group of children: "No, let's play a little longer."
"Okay, fine, but don't fight, okay?"
"knew."
Fu Ya and Hu Xiaoxiao walked and talked, while Rong Lianhu followed behind carrying his daughter. They separated when they arrived at the Feng family's door.
The couple carried their daughter home, and Rong Lianhu tried to communicate with her: "Jiaojiao, Daddy's little darling, can you let the seedlings out?"
Rong Lianhu came from a farming family. Although his sons had all learned from books to call him "Dad," he still habitually referred to himself as "Dad," and he did so again this time.
Rong Jiaojiao naturally didn't understand what he meant and thought he was teasing her. She kept giggling and no matter how many times he said it, it was no use. The little girl was laughing so hard she was almost out of breath.
The couple exchanged a helpless glance. Fu Ya said, "How about I apply for discharge from the army and stay home to take care of her?"
Rong Lianhu shook his head: "The country is in dire need of talent right now, and the military will not approve your application without a special reason."
Fu Ya said worriedly, "What should we do? I dare not let Aunt Ma take care of her anymore. If she finds out about Jiao Jiao's abnormality, I don't want to imagine the consequences."
Rong Lianhu remained silent. Fu Ya knew he was considering his options, so she didn't disturb him and waited quietly to the side.
After a long while, Rong Lianhu finally spoke: "If only I knew where my master was, maybe he could see the extraordinary things about Jiaojiao."
Fu Ya had heard Rong Lianhu talk about his master, who was a Xuanmen master. He had been seriously injured in a battle and hid in the mountains near Rong Lianhu's hometown. Because of his severe injuries, he was unable to move.
It was Rong Lianhu who took advantage of the opportunity to herd cattle for the landlord to find medicine and bring him food every day, which allowed him to get through it.
He owed a debt of karma and asked Rong Lianhu what reward he wanted. Rong Lianhu said he wanted to learn skills from him, but unfortunately, he didn't have the talent to learn metaphysics. The master only taught him a set of external martial arts and didn't take him as a disciple. It was Rong Lianhu who was shameless and claimed the title of the master's disciple for himself.
In the beginning, the master would visit him once every year or two and guide him in martial arts training for a period of time, but after he joined the army, he lost contact with him.
Thanks to his master's teachings, Rong Lianhu, a farm boy, has been able to survive the war.
Fu Ya worried: "Jiaojiao is so special, what if he finds out and does something bad to her?"
It wasn't that Fu Ya was being petty; it was a matter of her daughter's life, so she had to think things through.
Rong Lianhu shook his head. He didn't know where his master was, and he wasn't sure if his special circumstances would be detrimental to Jiaojiao. He couldn't guarantee anything.
After struggling for a long time without any results, Fu Ya could only say, "Let's go to sleep first. I'll rest tomorrow. I'll take care of her for now and think about it again tomorrow to see if we can come up with a solution."
Rong Jiaojiao had no idea that her parents were worried about her. She lay on the kang (a heated brick bed) and slept soundly, her little belly bulging.
But her consciousness was having a great time playing in the space. The vegetable seedlings and melon vines that she threw into the little secret realm in the evening were planted in rows by Rong Jiaojiao, regardless of whether they were roots or tips, just like the vegetables her mother planted.
As for Rong Jiaojiao herself, she seemed to be dreaming and playing, lying in bed with joy on her lips and brows.
The couple spent the whole night worrying and didn't sleep well.
The next day, Fu Ya kept a close eye on her daughter and noticed that anything her daughter could reach would disappear, while anything she wanted but couldn't reach would vanish.
Fu Ya understood that she could no longer entrust her daughter to anyone else's care. If all else failed, she would take her to work with her.
Although she thought this way, she also understood that this was not a long-term solution.
But her troubles were resolved by the afternoon.
In the afternoon, Rong Lianhu had just received orders to go back and prepare for a mission the next day. He had just left the regimental commander's office when he was notified by the gate guard that someone claiming to be his master was looking for him.
Rong Lianhu was both shocked and suspicious. Could it be that his master had foreseen his daughter Jiaojiao's extraordinary nature and had come looking for her?
Thinking this to himself, Rong Lianhu quickly ran towards the military district gate. When he arrived at the gate, panting, he saw a middle-aged man in a gray Zhongshan suit with a thin face standing at the entrance, looking towards the barracks as if admiring the scenery of the military district.
Rong Lianhu involuntarily slowed his pace.
"Master?" he exclaimed in surprise.
The middle-aged man's gaze fell on Rong Lianhu's face. He gave a calm smile, but his eyes revealed a profound and insightful understanding of everything.
His face was serene, with the air of a reclusive sage, yet his appearance remained unchanged from the last time they met twenty years ago.
He nodded slightly and said in a gentle tone, "Lian Hu, it's been a long time."
