Chapter 7 A Wooden Box

The more Niu Cuihua looked at her granddaughter, the happier she became. Last night she had a dream that she was sleeping under a big tree. When she woke up, she saw an old monk holding a fat baby in his hand. The monk told her that the baby was a lucky doll that was specially parasitic in her house and would bring great blessings to their family in the future.

He also specially arranged for her to dig a wooden box under the fifth big locust tree at the foot of Yueshan Mountain. Inside the box was a jade pendant and some other things. Except for the jade pendant, the other things could be used at will. However, the jade pendant belonged to this fat girl and could only be worn by her. Anyone else would have bad luck...

Niu Cuihua didn't remember clearly what the old monk said later, but she knew that the fat baby in the dream had a mole between his eyebrows, and his face looked exactly like her own granddaughter.

So she got up early in the morning and rushed to see her granddaughter. She found that her granddaughter looked very similar to the fat baby in her dream. More importantly, there was a mole between their eyebrows, which confirmed her guess.

"Then I have to go and see if there is a wooden box," Niu Cuihua thought secretly in her heart.

After that, she hurried out of the house and asked Old Man Li to accompany her with a wooden shovel and a basket. Zhang Huilan watched her mother-in-law hurried away after seeing her daughter. She looked suspicious, but didn't think much about it. She tucked the corner of her daughter's quilt and lay down.

She would not be so foolish as to get up and go to work. Anyway, she has the understanding of her husband and the care of her mother-in-law, so she can rest and recuperate openly. After all, her body is her own, so what does she care about what her two sisters-in-law say?

Liu Zhaodi, who was lighting a fire in the kitchen, began to vent her dissatisfaction unscrupulously when she saw her mother-in-law and father-in-law go out.

"Sister-in-law, look how much mother favors the fourth daughter-in-law. She has been raising her for more than 20 days, but she still doesn't let her work. She treats her like the wife of a wealthy landlord every day."

"Don't talk about Fourth Brother's wife like that. It's not cold now, and there's not much work. It won't hurt if we do a little more," Zhang Xiuzhi said while cutting vegetables.

"But why didn't I have to stay in bed for that long after giving birth? Why is she more valuable than others?" Liu Zhaodi retorted.

"That happened to be the busy farming season, and with the strict enforcement at the time, no one dared to skip work, right?"

Although Zhang Xiuzhi said this, she knew in her heart that if it were the fourth son's wife, she would not go to work no matter how busy she was. After all, the fourth son's family was not only capable but also loved his wife. Her family and the third son's family just worked hard every day and didn't think about these things at all. There was nothing she could do, this was fate.

But if you think about it carefully, compared to others, your life is not bad. Although your mother-in-law has a bad temper, she has never been harsh on her daughter-in-law. Your husband will never beat or scold your wife. At most, he will just work harder. Isn't this how people in the countryside live?

In other words, the third brother's wife is never satisfied. Ever since the fourth brother's wife came, she compares herself with others every day, saying that the fourth brother's wife Huilan is using cold cream and a new hairband. She doesn't think about the fact that the fourth brother is out driving a car all day long. Although he pays his salary to the government, he must have some private money saved. It's not normal for him to buy something for his wife.

Besides, they had been benefiting from the Fourth Brother's marriage. When Fourth Brother bought her sister-in-law vanishing cream, he'd always brought her some clam oil. She'd never used clam oil in her life, so what was there to complain about? Zhang Xiuzhi could only think about this in her heart; if she told her, Third Brother's wife would definitely get her mad.

Old man Li, who came out with his wife, was confused. "Old lady, what's the matter? Why do you have to let me out?"

"It's okay, can't you just accompany me for a walk? You old man, do you dislike me?" Niu Cuihua cursed as she walked.

"How dare I? If you say go, just go. Go slowly and don't fall. You have old arms and legs, why walk so fast?" Old man Li hurriedly tried to pull Niu Cuihua.

"Don't talk so much, hurry up and catch up." Niu Cuihua ignored Li Lao Han and hurriedly walked towards Yueshan Mountain. When Li Lao Han saw his wife walking towards the foot of the mountain, he hurriedly asked why he was going up the mountain.

"Don't worry about it, you'll know in a moment," Niu Cuihua replied. When they reached the foot of the mountain, she counted to the fifth locust tree and ordered Old Man Li, "Old man, hurry up and dig with your shovel."

"Oh, I was wondering what you wanted me to do with the shovel. It turns out I was supposed to dig the soil. But, old woman, why are you digging the soil? Besides, it's so cold now, I can't even dig the soil." Old man Li asked as he dug.

"Just dig when I tell you to. Don't be so nosy. Be careful when digging." Niu Cuihua watched Old Man Li digging without blinking.

"Hey, old woman, you're right, why isn't this soil frozen? It's really strange. Hey, there seems to be something underneath," old man Li muttered in confusion.

"That's right, there's something there. Dig it out slowly. Hurry up while no one comes here early in the morning," Niu Cuihua said hurriedly when she heard there was something.

After a few minutes, Old Man Li finally dug out the thing. It was a square red wooden box, about twenty centimeters long, wide and high, with no lock on the box.

Li Cuihua hurriedly opened it and saw a small long box on the top with a jade pendant inside. Under the long box was a layer of oilcloth. When she lifted the oilcloth, she saw several gold bracelets and gold earrings inside, and at the bottom were large gold bars neatly arranged.

Seeing the things in the box, Old Man Li was frightened, while Niu Cuihua was very excited.

"Old woman, what's going on? How did you know about these things?" Old man Li looked at his wife nervously.

I thought that this might be a family heirloom from the old woman's family, but that didn't make the right decision. I had been married for so many years and had never heard the old woman mention it. Besides, her family was extremely poor, so how could they have such good things?

Niu Cuihua closed the box and looked at her husband, Old Man Li, with a mysterious expression on his face. "I had a dream last night. I dreamed that an old monk told me to come and get these things. He said that our Xiaoxi is a lucky doll and will have great luck in the future. Anyway, he said a lot of things and I remember all of them."

Old man Li looked at his wife with a face full of shock. In the end, he just said, "It's enough for us to know about this matter. Let's not talk about it anymore. Let's put these things aside and give them to Xiaoxi in the future."

"Even if you don't tell me, I'm planning to do this. Even though our life is not easy now, we can still eat thanks to Lao Si's salary. We can't have any ideas about this thing. This is what the old immortal left for our Xiao Xi."

In Niu Cuihua's mind, the old monk was already an old immortal, otherwise how could he have such accurate dreams and tell her all these things.

Old man Li looked at the expression on his wife's face and knew what she was thinking. However, this matter was indeed a bit magical, and he almost believed it. So he could only arrange for Niu Cuihua not to talk nonsense. After all, it was a time to destroy the four olds. If she was reported, she would be in big trouble. However, he had to find a place to keep these things when he got back.

"Old man, put some soil in the basket and cover the wooden box," Niu Cuihua instructed Old Man Li after putting the box in the basket.

After the wooden box was completely covered, Old Man Li leveled the area he had just dug with soil and covered it with some hay. After doing this, the two of them hurried home. After all, they had been out for a long time and it was time to eat.
