Chapter 541 Fool

As the sounds of battle subsided, only Wang Zheng remained, still fighting against an endless swarm of mosquitoes.

Two fire-element awakened groups immediately came up and took over Wang Zheng's work.

They took turns throwing various fire-based abilities into the air-raid shelter, and with the help of the still-burning candle flames in the passage, they smoothly took over the task from Wang Zheng.

Although these individuals' awakening levels weren't particularly high, the combined firepower of the two groups was comparable to the destructive power provided by Wang Zheng's Candle Flame.

The rescue team did not stop. After receiving the refugees, they continued their evacuation in a grand procession.

The soldiers who came to relieve Wang Zheng saw the iconic black flame from afar, and when they passed by Wang Zheng, who had already begun to retreat, they indeed saw his familiar and young face.

Feeling the heat at the entrance of the air-raid shelter passage, even this group of fire-element awakened individuals, who were most compatible with fire elements and had the strongest tolerance for it, were finding it hard to bear.

Adding to Wang Zheng's previous achievements and the old man he carried on his back, the soldiers couldn't help but look at Wang Zheng with admiration.

As soon as Wang Zheng withdrew from the front line, before he could even look for Bart, the leader of the rescue team came to greet him.

Unlike the ordinary soldiers, this regimental commander clearly recognized Chu Tianxing. After seeing Chu Tianxing's face clearly, he only changed his expression slightly. Considering Wang Zheng's mood at the moment, he did not say much.

Wang Zheng found the colonel's face somewhat familiar, but they hadn't exchanged names; they had only met once before when talking to Xu Zhihong.

So he simply saluted, gave a brief introduction of the situation, and didn't engage in much further conversation.

The group leader naturally recognized Wang Zheng. After expressing his gratitude, he immediately said that they would continue eastward and asked Wang Zheng if he wanted to come along.

Wang Zheng naturally refused.

After learning that the troops had split off from the city center and were heading east to provide relief, he had already decided to retreat immediately.

This is the outskirts of the city, which is why they arrived last. They can evacuate directly to a safe area any further out, so there's no point in staying behind.

Just as Wang Zheng was about to say goodbye to the rescue team leader, Xu Yifeng ran over anxiously from a distance.

"Wang Zheng, Old Ba is in trouble, come and take a look."

He was incredibly brave when he just drove off the monster, but now he's suddenly deflated.

Other healers tried using their powers but to no avail. Your holy light has a special effect. Come with me to take a look…

Xu Yifeng, who had been looking anxious, suddenly froze when he looked up and saw Wang Zheng's completely unsurprised expression.

He seemed to have thought of something, and finally stammered:

"You...you're so strong, you can definitely...you can definitely save him, right?"

"Say something, answer me! You can definitely do it, right?"

After saying that, he ignored Wang Zheng's reaction, grabbed Wang Zheng's arm, and dragged him out.

Wang Zheng nodded apologetically to the regimental commander, then shook off Xu Yifeng's hand and followed him.

He understood Xu Yifeng's distress, which is why he managed to restrain his instinctive urge to retaliate. Otherwise, Wang Zheng would have drawn his knife the moment he reached out.

Before they could even get close, they found that their comrades from the air-raid shelter, with whom they had fought on the battlefield, were all gathered around Bart.

When everyone saw Wang Zheng arrive, they swarmed around him and started telling him all about the situation.

"Shut up, I know what's going on!"

Seeing how noisy they were, Wang Zheng had no choice but to tell them to quiet down.

Then Wang Zheng squatted down and looked at the once tall and imposing man, who was now over two meters tall, but had withered so much that he was no longer recognizable as a human.

His muscles had shrunk and become emaciated, and his entire face had become sunken.

His lips were cracked all the way to his ears, making him look like a walking corpse. Even his skin was wrinkled and looked like it had been scorched by the sun, like pieces of dry wood that had been burned by a raging fire.

After trying to cast two beams of holy light and finding them ineffective, Wang Zheng looked at Bart's still relatively bright eyes and asked in a low voice:

"Do you have any last wishes, such as where you would like to be buried or have your ashes taken back to your hometown in Mongolia?"

Let me make this clear first: don't ever ask me to protect anyone. I can't do it, and even if I could, I wouldn't want to!

Hearing Wang Zheng's blunt answer, Bart, who was already near death, was so angry that he laughed. His face, which was distorted by pain, looked more terrifying than a ghost when he laughed.

After coughing laboriously a few times, Bart finally spoke in a low, halting voice:

"No need for you to worry, cough cough... Let me stay with these comrades."

It's good to be buried with everyone like this; at least I won't be alone on the road to the underworld.

Haha, Wang Zheng, I've been protected by others all my life, and I've always been protecting others. Don't you think it's cool for me to die like this?

After all, protecting the weak behind you is what a real man should do.

Wang Zheng remained expressionless, though a hint of wavering flickered in his eyes, which went unnoticed by the others.

"Handsome my foot, you idiot..."
