Chapter 17 Curiosity Killed the Cat

Chapter 17 Curiosity Killed the Cat

Ye Wan didn't go to sleep on the kang (heated brick bed). Instead, she used the excuse of watching Daya make clothes to squeeze into the three maids' room for the night.

Sanya was overjoyed and hugged Yewan, calling her "Mother".

Er Ya said a lot of sarcastic and sarcastic things.

Only Da Ya didn't say a word, but glanced at Ye Wan several times.

The night passed just like that. Luckily, the three children were thin, otherwise there really wouldn't have been enough room on the kang (a heated brick bed).

When it got light, Ye got up to make breakfast. She had bought noodles yesterday and made pancakes for breakfast. The pancakes were just cooked when Daya went out, so she brought two for her.

“Da Ya, I’m going to town with you today. Do you know where I can buy sweet potatoes?” Ye Wan said as she took off her apron.

"sweet potato?"

Ye Wan explained, "It was the sweet potato we ate that morning."

This place might not be called sweet potato.

Daya said, "They grow in the village, every family grows them."

"There's no land at home? Nothing planted?" Ye Wan thought. If there were land, she could grow some things and take them out of her space openly and legitimately.

Although she had never farmed in her previous life, she had a special advantage: even withered trees could come back to life.

Da Ya shook her head.

The land was all purchased; the imperial court did not allow unauthorized reclamation.

"Can we grow things in the back of the yard?" Ye Wan thought. If not, she could just fence off the backyard and grow some vegetables.

Daya whispered, "It's possible, it's just that we can't grow anything..."

They don't know how to grow vegetables, and neither does their father.

Da Ya and Er Ya actually tried to grow them, but they probably just didn't have the talent. They only managed to grow one vegetable and wasted a whole bag of seeds.

Lin Anyuan was even less likely to produce any; he didn't produce a single one.

"I want to buy some sweet potato and vegetable seeds. Where should I buy them from?"

“Let Er Ya take you there,” Daya said, calling out to Er Ya.

"Why? You didn't think of me when you were buying flowers, but now that we're doing chores, you remember me. Why should I go? I'm not a maid. I'm not going." Er Ya said with a reluctant expression.

Unless Ye Wan buys her a hair accessory that's even prettier than San Ya's.

Ye Wan clicked her tongue. "I don't need to order you around. Sanya, let's go change into our new clothes."

Last night, Ye Wan asked Daya to make Sanya's clothes first.

"Tch, who cares?" Er Ya said angrily, then looked at Da Ya. "Big sister, didn't you promise to make my clothes first? San Ya's are all done but mine aren't. You're biased because we're both my sisters."

Daya said gently, "I'll make it for you tonight."

"You're just lying to me. You're still going to be that woman's tonight. I'll definitely be at the back, but I'm going to embroider flowers on top, so you'd better make it look good." Er Ya touched the flowers on her head with her delicate fingers.

Ye Wan changed Sanya's clothes and tied her hair into a bun with a new hair tie with beads. She found that the girl was quite cute, but too thin.

He patted her head and said, "Don't give your things to your second sister next time she takes them."

"Mother, Zhuzhu looks good on you." Sanya looked at Ye Wan with a smile, her eyes full of affection.

She has a mother, and her mother is the best.

Ye Wan laughed, "This little girl has a sweet tongue. I don't want it. When I have money later, I want to wear gold."

Sanya nodded, "Buy it for Mother."

Seeing that Ye Wan only took San Ya out, Er Ya muttered, "Who cares?" and then went to show off to the girls in the village who were digging for wild vegetables together.

It's not even the New Year yet, and she already has new hair ornaments; she'll soon have new clothes too.

"Hey, Lin's wife, what are you doing in the village?"

As luck would have it, the first person Ye Wan encountered upon entering the village was none other than Aunt Wang, who had visited before.

"Aunt Wang, are you going out?" Ye Wan asked with a smile.

"Go pick some vegetables from the field. What are you doing here?" Aunt Wang looked at Ye Wan curiously, and when she saw Sanya dressed in new clothes, she smiled at Ye Wan much more warmly.

"I want to buy some sweet potatoes; we're out of food at home."

Upon hearing that it was about buying, Aunt Wang hurriedly said, "I have some at home. How many do you want? Come on, let's go to my house."

"I have to say we've been able to survive these past few years thanks to this stuff. But if you eat too much, it makes your stomach burn and you fart a lot. All of this stuff is from last year; this year's hasn't come yet. If you want a lot, I'll give you a discount."

Before they knew it, they had arrived at Aunt Wang's house.

Aunt Wang's house was also an earthen house, but the walls were quite good, and the yard was kept very clean inside.

Everyone's probably out in the fields; it seems like no one's home right now.

Aunt Wang took Ye Wan directly to the cellar.

"I need a lot, I'll take two bags first," Ye Wan thought, deciding to try taking two bags first.

Sweet potatoes are a staple in every household, and they're cheap—two bags cost twenty coins.

Aunt Wang was puzzled when she saw that she bought so much. "Does your family not eat meals, and only eat this stuff?"

"I love to eat it." Ye Wan smiled and didn't say anything more.

Aunt Wang's mind raced with thoughts of her daughter, thinking how pitiful she was, so pretty, how could she... sigh.

"Stone, Stone, come and move the sweet potatoes to your aunt's house."

Aunt Wang called over her youngest son, a tall and strong boy of about seventeen or eighteen. His eyes widened at the sight of Ye Wan, "This is..."

Most of the girls in the village are dark-skinned, and Shi Tou is of marriageable age, but he has never seen anyone so outstanding in appearance.

Aunt Wang frowned and slapped her youngest son, then whispered, "What are you looking at with those eyes? This is Lin Anyuan's woman. Don't look if you don't want to die."

Upon hearing this, Shi Tou jumped up, turned around and ran away, saying, "Mother, let my father take it over."

Ye Wan's curiosity was piqued once again. She glanced at Sanya and, mimicking Aunt Wang, lowered her voice, "Auntie, could you tell me about Lin Anyuan? I see you all seem quite afraid of him."

That person is clearly so good-looking, aside from having a sharp tongue, there's no way he could be hated by everyone. What's the inside story?

"Hey, you're a local too, right? You don't know about this?" Aunt Wang glanced at Ye Wan several times.

"I'm not allowed to go out when I'm at home. I've never heard of that." She really hadn't heard of it.

“That’s true. You definitely can’t go out looking like that. Even if you’re with Lin Anyuan, remember to darken your face a bit when you go out so you don’t attract attention.”

Ye Wan could tell right from wrong, and steered the conversation back on track, "Thank you, Auntie. About what I asked you earlier..."

"You'll understand in time. Your aunt is keeping it from you for your own good. I think you're a kind-hearted person, and you're very generous. You're better than Lin Anyuan's first woman."

"Curiosity killed the cat. You'd better live a good life from now on."

Aunt Wang circled around, looking at Ye Wan with sympathy, but said nothing.

Ye Wan felt a pang of sadness, but could only smile and say, "Then I won't bother you any longer, Auntie. Uncle, please bring it to me when you have time. I really can't carry it all."

"OK."

As I led Sanya out of Aunt Wang's house, we hadn't walked far when we were stopped by someone.

"Hello, Auntie."

Aunt? Call her? Ye Wan's face darkened slightly.
