Chapter 10
It was a woman, she was leaning against a lamppost, watching them with interest.
Xu Zhou felt her scalp tingle, and she stopped, unsure whether to keep going forward or turn back. Turning back was definitely impossible, as there was only a car behind her that she had abandoned and had run out of gas.
But, moving forward?
Xunchun also stopped. He moved his wrist to urge her to continue walking, but she pressed down hard, stopping him. He stopped moving and just looked at her in confusion.
"Shh, you are not allowed to talk for a while." Xu Zhou turned his head slightly and warned him in a low voice, "You can only talk when I tell you to."
"Ah ah." Xunchun agreed.
Following his gaze, he saw the woman who had handed him the card. She stood alone, looking forlorn. The four people she had been with were nowhere to be seen, but Xu Zhou didn't dare to relax. Perhaps they were hiding somewhere, waiting for him.
Why is she standing here?
Is she waiting for someone? Who is she waiting for?
Does she still remember herself?
…
For a moment, many questions flashed through Xu Zhou's mind. She thought to herself, no wonder her eyelids were twitching today, it turned out she was waiting here.
She couldn't make up her mind and stood there looking at the woman.
The system reminded her: "She doesn't seem to have any malicious intent."
After hearing what the system said, Xu Zhou relaxed a little.
"I didn't expect that we would meet so soon."
The woman spoke first. She stood up straight, brushed off the nonexistent dust on her clothes, and walked slowly towards her with graceful movements.
"Don't worry, I'm alone."
"Yeah, what a coincidence." Xu Zhou responded perfunctorily.
Walking in front of the two men, the woman was a head taller than Xu Zhou. She bent down slightly and looked at Xu Zhou straight in the eyes, not even glancing at Xun Chun.
There was a hint of nostalgia in her eyes.
The woman's face was still weathered, her face still the same, but she was not as tired as before, instead she was full of charm. Xu Zhou had seen this feeling in someone before, it was not just a matter of appearance, her every move exuded charm.
Xu Zhou looked back and quietly grasped Xunchun's wrist.
"You're so cute." After a long time, the woman raised her hand and patted Xu Zhou's head, then stood up and praised.
"Thank you, you are very elegant." This is the truth, Xu Zhou felt it personally.
Hearing this, the woman smiled.
She took a quick look at Xunchun. He was handsome and could carry a backpack. He was okay, better than the zombie last time. Although she had never seen that zombie, she thought he should be better.
At least humans are stronger than zombies.
"You don't want to keep that little zombie anymore?" the woman whispered in Xu Zhou's ear. She didn't say it out loud because she was afraid the man would get angry and leave after she said it. "This one looks okay. You have good taste."
Xu Zhou was slightly stunned.
She still remembers zombies, so what does she mean by this?
Xu Zhou answered casually: "I didn't raise one."
"Yeah, you didn't raise one," the woman said to herself, not caring about Xu Zhou's answer. "But it's better not to raise one. It's better to raise someone."
Xu Zhou had given up struggling.
They walked side by side on the street, and Xunchun was obedient and didn't say a word.
The woman seemed to be there just to chat. She followed Xu Zhou and chatted with him casually. She didn't use clichés, just everyday topics. When she heard Xu Zhou's answer, she would talk for a while; if she didn't hear an answer, she would change the subject and continue.
The awkward silence couldn't stop her from talking.
Xu Zhou followed her plan and found an outdoor sports equipment store. She wanted a good-quality tent or sleeping bag, preferably one that Xunchun couldn't tear apart.
"What are you looking for?" The woman looked up at the sign, which was cracked in half and fell to the ground.
"tent."
The door handle of the shop was locked and was shaking. Xu Zhou checked it out and considered whether he should break in through the window.
The woman glanced at it from the side, and without hesitation, she picked up the sign at her feet and smashed it against the lock. With a clang, the lock fell to the ground.
The woman threw away the sign, clapped her hands, and signaled Xu Zhou to go in.
Xu Zhou pushed open the door, and a strong smell of dust hit her nose. She covered her mouth and nose, moved to the side, and did not go in. She just pushed the door open to let the smell out first.
The woman volunteered: "I'm familiar with this. Come to me and I can recommend a good quality one for you."
"good."
Xu Zhou nodded and accepted her recommendation.
It was just a tent, so he wasn't afraid of a woman doing something. But after all this time, seeing her like this, she didn't seem like someone who said one thing in public and did another behind the scenes. Although Xu Zhou didn't know why she followed him,
She asked, but the woman didn't say.
The smell in the store has dissipated a lot.
Xu Zhou walked into the store. It looked quite large, with numerous shelves thoughtfully labeled with categories. She walked along the shelves, searching for the tent while also looking for other items she could use.
Xunchun followed Xu Zhou and acted as a qualified follower.
The woman thought about it and decided to walk beside Xu Zhou. She had nothing to take, so instead of walking alone, she decided to follow the girl.
She looked at Xu Zhou who was looking for something seriously, and she felt more and more relieved, but there was a little bitterness deep in her heart.
She sighed silently and stopped thinking about the past.
"System, what do you think I should take?" Xu Zhou asked in his heart.
Looking at the dazzling array of goods, all of which seemed useful, yet all of which seemed useless, her head felt like it was a mess. These days, the thing she used the most was the tent; the other things were useless.
"For self-defense."
Although the system didn't think Xu Zhou needed to take anything, since she asked, she might as well take something with her since she was already here.
Xu Zhou picked up the outdoor survival and self-defense knife, turning it over and over to examine it carefully. She took out the knife by the handle and tried to cut the rope next to it. The blade was sharp and the weight was just right. There was an accessory bag next to it, which contained some survival tools, and she took that as well.
The woman watched from the side, took out some things, and put other small things into Xu Zhou's bag, explaining their purpose.
Xu Zhou accepted them all, believing that good things are never too much.
Women are very familiar with these things and can tell them easily.
Xu Zhou was quite unexpected.
She mentally spoke to the system: "You said I'm stealing skills now, when will I be able to reach this level?"
"I'll help you cheat," the system said. "I'll tell you the answer secretly. I'm an encyclopedia. This way, you can reach this level now."
"Why?"
Xu Zhou now understood why the evil cultivators were so rebellious and why others were so eager to learn from them. This shortcut was truly enviable.
The final tent and sleeping bag were also picked by the woman. Xu Zhou also bought a set of windbreakers for himself and Xunchun. After putting on the new clothes, not only the people, but also the zombies became more energetic.
Something happened while Xu Zhou was changing clothes.
The woman tried to talk to Xunchun, but Xunchun just glanced at her with an expressionless face and responded indifferently.
The woman seemed lost in thought.
When Xu Zhou came out, the woman suddenly realized and said, "So you have a little mute now."
Um?
Xu Zhou looked puzzled.
The woman looked distressed and continued, "He can't even speak. It's really hard for you."
"It's... okay?" Xu Zhou said uncertainly. She looked at Xunchun, who had an innocent look on his face, but still repeated her words without saying anything.
Xu Zhou was extremely grateful to the system for not being able to recognize Xunchun's identity. If it weren't for the reward task that allowed him to slowly restore his human appearance, she didn't know what would happen when she met the woman today.
Xunchun now looks like a human being, except that he can't speak and is a little stupid.
Being a mute seems to be the perfect way to conceal his true identity?
The more Xu Zhou thought about it, the more feasible it seemed, and he didn't forget to ask the system.
"System, don't you agree? Next time I'll just say Xunchun is mute. I just don't know if he has any requests."
"Probably not." The system recalled that he usually spoke little and would only respond to Xu Zhou's words. He was silent most of the time.
"That's great."
Xu Zhou solved a big problem and was very happy in his heart, and he also showed a little happiness on the surface.
"Are you so happy about changing into new clothes?" asked the woman.
"Yeah," Xu Zhou readily accepted the excuse and followed the woman's words, "After all, I haven't worn new clothes for a long time."
“It’s really beautiful.”
The woman's voice was a little low.
Xu Zhou looked over curiously and saw the woman tilting her head to look outside the store.
She didn't see the woman's expression, but Xu Zhou was a bit sensitive to emotional changes. She discussed with the system in her mind: "She must have thought of something, her tone has changed."
"Yes, she is a little depressed." The system also discovered it.
At this moment, the woman turned around, looking calm.
Xu Zhou was caught off guard and met the woman's gaze. She blinked and smiled at her.
This is where the discussion of women's emotional changes ends.
It was getting dark, and Xu Zhou didn't like to act at night, so she wanted to find a place to rest and look for medicine and a vehicle tomorrow.
The woman still followed them, but she said she would leave tomorrow.
Xu Zhou nodded to show that he understood.
Relying on the system's navigation, they didn't encounter any zombies along the way. Xu Zhou found a high-end-looking hotel to stay in. She and Xunchun stayed in a room, and the woman lived next door.
"good evening."
Before closing the door, the woman said to Xu Zhou.
"good evening."
The door slammed shut, and Xu Zhou pushed the table and chairs against the door, adding some weight. She checked the windows, drew the curtains, and then lay down on the bed.
Xunchun sat on the other bed, followed her movements and lay down, covering her head with the quilt.
"Xunchun," Xu Zhou stood up, walked to Xunchun's bed, pulled down his quilt, and said to him in a low voice, "From now on, if there are other people around, you must not speak. Remember?"
She didn't know how soundproof the room was, but it would be safer if the noise was quieter.
Xunchun rolled his eyes, and after a while, he nodded seriously.
"Great, take a break."
Xu Zhou touched his hair and encouraged him. Seeing that he closed his eyes obediently, he returned to his bed and began to persuade the system to work overtime.
"System, the moment I saw you, I knew you were the most powerful system. You definitely don't need to sleep," Xu Zhou praised it before playing the emotional card and negotiating with it: "We've lived together for so long, and you know how pitiful I am, being alone. Can you please help me stay alert for one night?"
"Don't you still have zombies? How can you be alone?"
"He is a zombie, not a human." Xu Zhou reacted quickly.
"Just this once." The system agreed.
"You are such a great system. I will definitely give you a five-star rating."
The moon rises in the night sky, and I fall asleep contentedly during the day.
