Chapter 12
The sun rises in the east.
Xu Zhou got some daily medicines from the pharmacy.
Before picking up the medicine, she checked the expiration dates. They were generally long past their expiration dates. In the old calendar, expired medicine was not recommended. And now, with the end of the world, there was no telling what complications might arise. So, she stood in front of the medicine shelf, hesitating whether to take it.
Next second.
"System, is this medicine still effective?"
She asked the system in her heart. After all, she could look for the system whenever she was in doubt. It would definitely be of some use.
"Take it. It's okay to give yourself some psychological comfort."
Continued daytime:?
The woman walked around looking for Xu Zhou and happened to see her standing in front of the medicine shelf, at a loss. She turned and left without saying a word. When she returned, she carried a bag of medicine and handed it to Xu Zhou.
"Here, these are enough."
As soon as the system finished speaking, the woman who came over interrupted Xu Zhou's thoughts.
Xu Zhou took the bag and saw that it was full of daily medicines in several doses, and there were even some medicines she had never thought of.
I have to say, this woman is really considerate. As she pinched the bag's handle, a warm feeling ran through her heart.
"Thank you." Xu Zhou thanked him.
"You're welcome." The woman waved her hand. "If you don't have any other illnesses, these medicines are basically enough. Of course, if you think they're not enough, you can get a few more according to these medicines, or you can look into other medicines."
"These are enough," Xu Zhou shook his head.
She didn't want to take any medicine in the first place, and the system's answer indicated that the medicine was basically ineffective, so she didn't need it anymore. However, the woman's kindness really made her feel good.
Seeing that the woman had nothing in her hands, Xu Zhou asked, "Sister, aren't you going to take the medicine?"
The woman looked at Xu Zhou in surprise before answering, "I'm in good health and don't need these."
After she finished speaking, she paused for a moment before continuing, "If you're really sick, don't overuse these medicines. The side effects are quite severe."
"What are the side effects?"
“You’ll die.”
The woman's tone was calm, as if she was asking "What are you eating today?"
Hearing these two simple words, Xu Zhou was surprised. She had thought the medicine wouldn't be very useful, but she hadn't expected this result. But after thinking about it carefully, it seemed to make sense. Diseases in the apocalyptic era would definitely be different from those in the old calendar era. Furthermore, the medicine was expired, so blindly using it would be like trying any remedy in desperation.
Xu Zhou looked down at the medicine bag.
She suddenly thought of the day when she first met the woman, at the door of the pharmacy, she was supporting an unconscious woman.
So, is the unconscious woman dead?
Xu Zhou didn't continue thinking about it.
After confirming they had nothing left to take, they left the pharmacy and headed for a ride. The woman, still leading the way, said she'd been here before and was familiar with the place. It wasn't clear if she'd been there before, or if she'd scouted the place yesterday.
Xu Zhou lagged behind half a step, and Xun Chun followed behind her.
"System, tell me, at this point, is the probability of her attacking me still high?"
"If she wanted to do something, why would she have kept you here until now?" the system replied. While the system couldn't read minds or understand people's hearts, it could still barely sense magnetic field fluctuations. When someone was about to do something, no matter how well they hid it, the surrounding magnetic field would change, but this wasn't something humans could perceive.
"That's right." Xu Zhou thought so.
The woman chose a road without zombies and after many twists and turns, she found the off-road vehicle that Xu Zhou had been thinking about. Speaking of this, Xu Zhou even suspected that the woman also had a system in her brain. Her perception was very strong and she could detect whether there were zombies nearby.
Xu Zhou touched the car body and walked around it, very satisfied. The woman had no idea about the car, so she followed Xu Zhou and chose an SUV.
"Let's go our separate ways here," the woman said casually to Xu Zhou as she started the car and rolled down the window. "Have you never experienced the apocalypse, or have you been too well protected? Of course, no matter where you come from, stay away from the New Sequence, the organization represented by that card."
"Remember, stay away."
"Be sure to stay away."
The woman's eyes were deep, and at first glance they seemed to be filled with stories that were hard to fathom and understand.
Without waiting for Xu Zhou's answer, the woman drove away, heading west.
Xu Zhou stood there in a daze, watching the car drive away. There was a pink cartoon sticker on the back of the black car body.
Beneath the desolate city, the black vehicles, with their vibrant colors, seemed to have broken free from their shackles and were sailing away victoriously.
A fragmented picture.
"She knows something..."
Xu Zhou muttered to himself.
What the woman said was like a depth bomb dropped into her mind. For a moment, her mind became a mess. Many speculations popped up like mushrooms after rain, mixed together, making it difficult for her to sort them out.
The system was very calm and played a soothing light music for her.
"Ahh no... no no."
A hoarse voice came, and Xunchun tightly grasped her wrist. She raised her head and looked at him sideways, saw the worry flash across his eyes, and clearly heard the word "no" clearly.
tinnitus.
Now, her head completely exploded.
Before Xu Zhou fainted, she had only one thought in her mind, which was that she would not fall headfirst to the ground.
The system in my mind was also forced into hibernation without warning.
system:?
The system looked incredulous.
Is it reasonable?
How could she mobilize its energy even after she fainted?
——
Xu Zhou has always been a calm person who leads a high-energy life.
On the one hand, she's active in life, but on the other, she's indifferent and takes things as they come. She feels like two separate entities: on one hand, she says she's determined to bravely forge ahead and challenge life, while on the other, she says she's okay with just lying down.
Since childhood.
For example, she could study hard for higher grades, or she could feel at peace when her grades dropped, believing that this was enough. For her, these two perspectives were neither control nor suffering. She could find a balance between the two, and this balance made her who she is.
She always felt that her life was good.
As for why she likes Xunchun, the reason is simple: she thinks he is very different.
In her perspective, he was like a snail with a planned route, taking every step slowly and steadily, just like a mature young man.
Being with him is like a powerful reassurance.
Most of the time, her life is well-behaved, but the difference is that she often has moments of inspiration. She will do something on impulse without considering what accidents might happen, so she is always defeated by accidents halfway.
But she doesn't remember, and the same thing will happen again next time, and the cycle will repeat.
But after meeting Xunchun, all these unexpected moments disappeared.
One time, she suddenly wanted to go hiking, and when she informed him, she was already at the bottom of his dormitory. He leaned out of the balcony, pointed to the shade of the tree next to him, and asked her to wait for three minutes.
Hearing this, she took out her phone, clicked on the stopwatch, and calculated how long it would take him.
One minute.
Two minutes.
Three minutes.
Xunchun showed up at the dormitory gate on time. He was carrying a black bag and a small bag of grapes in his right hand. He walked over and handed the grapes to her, telling her they were washed and sweet, and she would probably like them.
She happily took Qingti, showed him the stopwatch interface, and asked him how he could be so punctual.
He explained that he had previously measured the time it took to get downstairs. In order to get a few more minutes of sleep before going to the morning office, his roommate dragged everyone in the dorm to help him measure the time it took to get from the dormitory to the teaching building, and even optimized the best route several times.
Hearing this, she could only give a thumbs up and said that she would try it next time.
Xunchun thought about it seriously before replying to her, saying that he could help her optimize her time and could also try to go to the classroom with her when he had no classes in the morning.
She was not surprised at all that he could say that, because he did this all the time. He took any of her ideas seriously, and would let her do it and help her improve it.
So, when the sun came out and the temperature rose, and she was hugging a tree to beg the water seller to show up, he took out a bottle of mineral water and a hat from his backpack and said, "Special offer, zero yuan." She felt that he was worthy of her and going out with him was a perfect choice.
The beautiful scenery at the top of the mountain was worthy of her efforts along the way.
She shouted loudly into the wind, and he echoed her voice beside her.
Xunchun is a gentle, polite, introverted person who would consider providing a safety net for her.
But he didn't think about it before starting. Instead, he followed her pace and thought about it as he walked.
Friends always feel that someone like her should have a passionate love affair, rather than a long-lasting one like Xunchun.
Why not say they are friends, because that's what she had imagined before. Her future boyfriend should be sunny and cheerful, with a hearty laugh that could be heard from a few meters away, with a carefree personality, and he would go crazy with her or take her to go crazy.
Then, Xunchun perfectly avoided the assumption.
But, it was this unexpected him who gave her a very comfortable and favorite relationship.
To be honest, she was really angry at his proposal to break up. Not only was it inconsistent with his usual style, but even his wording was very cold. Even if he suddenly changed his mind, it wouldn't happen in just a few hours.
If only zombies could be explained.
The dream during the day was intermittent.
One moment it was her love story with Xunchun; the next moment it was a car race on a post-apocalyptic highway, with a herd of animals driving side by side with her; the next moment it was zombies chasing her, and then the system transformed into a tall stone man carrying her and running madly...
The next second, the stone man turned around and grinned at her -
!
Horrified!
Xu Zhou suddenly opened his eyes, the image of the stone man still lingering in his mind.
Xunchun, who was sitting next to her, saw Xu Zhou wake up. He leaned in front of her, tilted his head and blinked, to confirm whether she was alive again.
Before Xu Zhou could think about what was happening, she saw a big face sticking out at her. She closed her eyes with an expressionless face. When she opened her eyes, the big face was still there.
Oh, it's not a dream.
She pushed Xunchun away and sat up.
Xunchun sat back down under her force.
Still alive, and living longer than before.
He felt relieved.
He just didn't understand why she always liked to die with her eyes closed. He had also tried to die with his eyes closed, but it wasn't fun at all. However, if she died, he would have to die too, because dying without his eyes closed wouldn't be fun either.
The zombies were confused, but they had no choice but to do as they were told.
