Chapter 14
Dong Xuancai had come from another base a year ago and had just arrived at Tianhe Base for the 11th Exploration Team after completing his assessment this month. The original team consisted of five people, including the team leader, and he was the youngest newcomer.
A week ago, the captain accepted the task of exploring Yangxing City.
The day before yesterday afternoon, they arrived in Yangxing City. They then explored most of the city, but apart from the common zombies, they found nothing special.
Last night, they were supposed to rest when they saw a light coming from the hospital to the west. They had already checked there during the day, and it was empty, with no zombies. The ground was covered with long-dried blood.
This light is very strange at this moment.
It was normal for the base to have electricity, but in a deserted city, it was abnormal for an unmanned hospital to suddenly have lights on at night, not to mention that the hospital's circuit had been abandoned for a long time.
They immediately went to check the details.
Just like during the day.
Except there is light.
They checked it up and down several times and there was no problem.
The hospital looked normal, but they had a bad feeling.
However, after staying up all night and having to be vigilant about their surroundings during the exploration, under such high-intensity operations, the team's spirits were not very good by the early morning, so they planned to rest first and try again during the day.
I found a hotel to rest in the morning, and it was there that I met Xu Zhou and the others. We had a quick chat.
After a few hours of rest, they headed to the hospital.
The hospital lobby was still open, welcoming them. This time, there was no light in the hospital, which indicated something was amiss. They first searched the upper floors, but found nothing.
After checking the ground, they turned underground.
The light in the stairwell downstairs was very dim, so they turned on their flashlights and went down the steps.
The basement floor was a long corridor with several rooms on either side, all of which were closed. A third of the way down the corridor, a rusted iron door stood. The ceiling glowed coldly.
They passed through the iron gate and headed towards the stairs at the opposite end of the corridor.
The layout of this hospital is very strange. There are no more stairs after coming down from the first floor. If you want to go down to the B2 floor, you have to go through the corridor on the B1 floor and go to the stairs at the opposite end.
The basement floor was chilly, even colder than last night. A cold breeze blew past, leaving a faint echo. They pushed open the door and examined the rooms on either side. Each one contained an operating table, white cloths scattered on the floor, and surgical instruments in disarray.
In the old days, this was not what a regular hospital looked like.
They walked through the corridor and took the stairs down to the basement level. Halfway down, they heard a "bang" coming from the basement level.
They looked at each other, realized something was wrong, and hurried back to the basement to check.
The iron door in the corridor was closed.
The iron door had been opened from the stairwell just now, and now it was closed, but not locked. There was a sticky liquid on the iron door, fresh and not yet dried, and the liquid gave off a fishy smell.
This means that the door was closed by someone else! This person is hiding in the dark, watching their every move.
They looked at each other.
Standing at the iron gate, the staircases at both ends were dim and unclear.
"Where are you going?" someone asked.
"Go to the basement floor." said the captain.
Before they even reached the second floor below ground, they heard a noise on the first floor. Attracted by the sound, they would have thought someone was up there and would have gone back to investigate, perhaps even chase after them. But why did they do it when they were already on the second floor below ground? This suggests there was something there, and someone was deliberately trying to divert them away, not wanting them to discover it.
The group walked back to the basement level 2. Before leaving, they used a chair in the room to prop up the iron door.
The sound of footsteps echoed in the stairwell.
"Boom"
"Boom"
"Boom"
Go down to the landing.
"Bang--"
A louder noise came from the underground floor, as if the entire ground was shaking.
Without hesitation, they turned and ran back to the underground first floor. Still no one was in sight, only the iron door clanging and rebounding.
The captain assigned three people to continue going down to the B2 floor, and the remaining two followed him to stay on the B1 floor. Dong Xuancai was the one on the B1 floor.
The three of them walked towards the iron door, where a liquid had appeared. The captain and his partner split up to check the room. Dong Xuancai pushed the door open and walked out to investigate.
There were two rooms outside the iron gate. Dong Xuancai touched the iron railings, his hands covered in rust. The iron gate was light and easy to push, but it creaked when touched.
Dong Xuancai stood in front of the iron gate.
Suddenly, I felt a cool and wet sensation on my forehead, as if water was dripping from the ceiling.
wrong!
He subconsciously raised his hand and was about to wipe off the water droplets, but suddenly realized that there was something sticky on his forehead.
This is not water at all.
He looked up, the first thing he saw was a faint red glow, like a siren. Shining his flashlight, he saw a livid face suddenly droop downward, giving him a start. The zombie's mouth was wide open, drool dripping from the corners.
"Captain, there are zombies!" Dong Xuancai shouted instantly, and at the same time quickly stepped back, away from the iron gate.
Two pieces of the ceiling above the iron door were pried off, and the zombie was lying at the entrance. No wonder they didn't find it twice, it turned out to be hiding in the ceiling.
Hearing Dong Xuancai's voice, the two people who were checking in the room rushed out quickly, and happened to see the zombie jumping down from the ceiling. With a "bang", it fell heavily to the ground, closed the iron door with its backhand, and leaned against the iron door with its back to them.
Footsteps could also be heard from the basement level; three people were running up. But the noises were a bit too much.
The zombie was very tall, about 1.9 meters, and had a broad body, which was very different from the skinny zombies seen before.
"Ying——" A long and rapid whistle like a bird came out of the zombie's mouth, and he stared at Dong Xuancai fiercely.
The captain and his two companions grabbed medical equipment from the ground and attacked the zombies, trying to push open the iron gate. However, the zombies were incredibly strong, blocking the gate like a wall. The gaps between the bars of the gate were tiny, and the zombies' heads were wiggling around flexibly. Their attacks on the zombies' heads were equally thwarted, and their attacks on other parts of the body were equally blocked.
For a moment, the situation was deadlocked.
Seeing this, Dongxuancai picked up a chair and smashed it at the zombie.
The zombie roared, punched the chair away, and stood there motionless. The chair shattered to the ground.
When the chair failed, Dongxuancai grabbed a stick and hit him.
The zombies are going to block them!
The two captains looked at each other with serious eyes.
The three people on the second floor below had already run up, panting. The bad news was that a group of zombies were following them! The second floor below, like the first floor below, was empty. The zombies had come up from the third floor below, having heard the zombies' whistles.
The five people here didn't communicate much and hurriedly took their equipment to resist the zombies' attacks.
The zombies at the door were like a solid iron wall, and they could easily deal with Dongxuancai's attacks. Or rather, Dongxuancai's attacks were just like tickles in their eyes.
A glimmer of red flickered in its eyes.
Behind the iron gate, the zombies' attack became more and more fierce. The five people were exhausted from dealing with it. One of the teammates was scratched in the panic, and blood dripped onto the ground. The zombies in the front row became even more crazy when they smelled the blood.
"Dongxuancai, run!"
The captain shouted without turning around.
Dong Xuancai heard this and tightened his grip on the stick, his face hesitant. If he didn't run, there was little hope. If he ran, there would be no hope at all. There were no other teams in Yangxing City, and he didn't know if he could find anyone to rescue them. Even if he did, they might not still be alive.
At this time, the zombie rolled his eyes, bent down, picked up the broken pieces of the chair he threw at him, and threw it back at him.
The fragments flew like arrows, streaking across Dong Xuancai's cheek, leaving a streak of blood. Immediately afterwards, more fragments flew over.
"Hold on, I'll go find someone to rescue you."
Dong Xuancai had no choice but to turn around and leave the basement.
He looked back and saw the tall zombie staring at him silently, the red glimmer in its eyes seeming to speak. His scalp tingled, a chill instantly crawled up his spine, all the way to the top of his head. Cold sweat broke out, and he tumbled back to the first floor.
Standing in the sun, the chill is still there.
"Those zombies are very different," Dong Xuancai's voice was still trembling. He recalled the look in the zombies' eyes. They were no longer black and empty. They could think like humans. "The zombies seem to have become smarter."
Xu Zhou subconsciously glanced at Xunchun, who was sitting in the passenger seat. Xunchun's eyes were clear.
Dong Xuancai not only relayed the situation, but also asked where the woman who was with them had gone. He had always thought that woman was their leader. Seeing Xu Zhou pointing to the south, there was still regret in his tone.
The system said that he probably saw that women were very strong and thought that if a woman was there, his chances of winning would be very good.
Xu Zhou sighed repeatedly in his heart.
Xu Zhou drove to the hospital quickly.
The hospital was dead silent. When I entered the hall, I couldn't hear any sound from below. It was very likely that the person was already dead.
Dong Xuancai also realized this. With a serious expression and a heavy voice, he said that he would lead the way.
The system proactively explored the situation underground and found that there were indeed a group of zombies, but no signs of humans.
Xu Zhou gripped the steel pipe tightly in her right hand, her left hand resting on her waist, where she'd picked up the knife from yesterday. Xun Chun still walked to her left, but this time half a step ahead.
At the staircase leading to the basement floor, I could feel the cool breeze, chilling my scalp. Xu Zhou gathered his coat and walked downstairs, following the lights of Dongxuancai.
Going down to the basement, it was exactly as Dong Xuancai had described. A dark corridor, an open iron door, a hole in the ceiling, signs of a fight everywhere, and five people lying on the ground, but there was no sign of the zombies.
She looked specifically at the hole in the ceiling and saw no zombies lying there.
"Hold him." The system suddenly spoke.
Xu Zhou, still observing the situation, made a decisive move and grabbed Dong Xuan Cai. The next second, the momentum of Dong Xuan Cai's advance caused him to stumble forward and be forced to let go. Xun Chun also reacted quickly, reaching out with his left hand to grab Dong Xuan Cai's arm, successfully preventing him from advancing.
Dongxuancai turned his head and opened his mouth to say something.
At this moment, the sound of the wind in the corridor suddenly became louder, and a figure came at them with great speed.
Without any thought, Xunchun let go of Dongxuancai's hand, pulled Xuzhou to the side with his left hand, and supported her back with his right hand and his elbow against the wall.
