Chapter 22

Chapter 22

Xu Zhu woke up in the evening and saw the dim living room when he opened his eyes.

When she woke up, the house was empty and no one responded when she called anyone's name. It seemed that the two brothers had gone out together, and she didn't know what they were doing.

Xu Zhou stretched out, and after moving around in the living room for more than ten minutes, he slowly sat down on the swing in the yard, pushed his feet back, and when his feet left the ground, the swing began to swing. Xunchun and she made the swing together, Xunchun was the main force, and she assisted.

She held onto the swing rope, looking up and down at the closed gate.

There's a hint of unreality.

This kind of life, back in the old days, had already been written into Xunchun's and her plans. The ultimate destination she and Xunchun always imagined was a leisurely and comfortable retirement where they could sleep until they woke naturally, undisturbed. Every month, she counted on her fingers how long it would take.

Unexpectedly, it was finally realized ahead of time at the end of the world.

The system said, "Good evening, allies. Do you think being a zombie is boring?"

Xu Zhou: “No.”

The system left with regret: "Okay." It wanted to discuss the drama it was following with her, but unfortunately she didn't appreciate it. Forget it, it decided to watch it by itself, and let the zombies just swing on the swing.

Xu Zhou didn't care. She could hang out with zombies for an entire afternoon, so boredom wouldn't exist.

In the afterglow, light and shadow intertwine and overlap.

“Squeak—”

Xunchun pushed the door open and came in, followed closely by Xunyou, each holding a plastic bag in their hands.

"How long have you been awake? Are you bored waiting?" Xunchun came over and showed Xu Zhou what was in the bag. "There's no food at home, so Xunyou and I went out to find some this afternoon."

"Just woke up." Xu Zhou praised, thinking that Xunchun was very thoughtful. She almost forgot that people need to eat.

"Sister-in-law." Xunyou said and went straight into the living room.

Xu Zhou stood up and followed Xun Chun in. She leaned close to Xun Chun's ear and asked, "Can we eat it? Will it be digestible?"

"Just go back to your room and I'll help you get through this." Xunchun said.

"Thank you, I'll go upstairs." Xu Zhou turned smoothly and went upstairs, waving at him.

When Xunchun came to the table, Xunyou was still sitting on the chair.

He sorted the food and laid it out, took two loaves of bread, and said to Xunyou, "Your sister-in-law doesn't have much of an appetite. Eat whatever you want, and then go back to your room to rest. If you have anything to say, you can talk to her when you want to."

Xunyou: "Okay."

Xunchun went upstairs and saw Xu Zhou squatting at the door of the room waiting for him.

"Sister-in-law, I have something to tell you."

Xunyou had a private chat with Xu Zhou on the afternoon of the third day.

Xunyou had spent most of his time in his room these past few days, locked up behind closed doors and refusing to see any zombies. Xuzhou, worried about his mood, forced him to come out and bask in the sun every day. He wasn't very talkative, but thankfully, he was obedient. When he heard someone call him, he'd come out of his room and sit on the swing to bask in the sun.

At that time, Xu Zhou was practicing Tai Chi in the yard, and Xun Chun moved a chair to watch. Hearing Xun You's words, the two zombies looked at each other, each seeing the other's surprise.

A few seconds later, Xunchun went out on his own accord, using the excuse of looking for food, leaving Xu Zhou and Xun You alone. He closed the gate before leaving.

"Xiao You, what do you want to tell me?" Xu Zhou didn't hesitate and rushed to the swing. She had been wanting to hear his story for a long time, and today she finally got her chance.

The system did the same, immediately putting down the newly opened TV series and listening attentively.

"I'm sorry, sister-in-law."

Xu Zhou was stunned: What's the matter with this sudden apology?

Xunyou prepared himself mentally for a long time. He met Xu Zhou's concerned gaze, took a deep breath, and spoke at length without pausing. "I have something to confess to you. Actually, it was me who sent the breakup message my brother sent you on the day of the apocalypse. He had no idea. He left in a hurry that day and forgot to take his phone. My friends and I were playing Truth or Dare, and I lost, so I used his phone to send you the message."

He added, "I'm sorry."

After finishing this long paragraph, he felt a little short of breath and looked at Xu Zhou nervously.

Xu Zhou was digesting what she heard.

Xunyou spoke a little too quickly, and before she could react, the system called out, "What? So he was the one who sent the breakup message? Is this the popular punishment for losing at Truth or Dare?"

The system was still talking, but the voice was getting farther and farther away, and Xu Zhou could no longer hear it clearly.

Her mind was in a mess now, with all kinds of scenes appearing at once, including the scene where she was worried and making phone calls everywhere, the scene where Xunyou took out her cell phone, the scene where Xunchun protected her when she was attacked by zombies...all kinds of scenes flashed by one after another.

She stood there in a daze.

So, her worry and fear that night were fake, and the knot in her heart that had been bothering her for so long was also fake.

Continue to close your eyes during the day.

When she opened her eyes again, she found Xunyou grabbing the corner of her clothes, with panic in his eyes.

"Sister-in-law, are you okay? You can hit me or scold me, but this matter really has nothing to do with my brother. He has never had such thoughts about you..." Xunyou became more and more panicked as he spoke.

Although he didn't know what his brother and sister-in-law went through at the end of the world, he was also troubled about whether to tell this story that happened in the old days.

These past few days, he'd noticed his brother taking great care of his sister-in-law, but she wasn't looking too good, and there was always a sense of distance between them. In the old days, his brother would talk about his sister-in-law the most at home, bragging about their close relationship. Now, any estrangement could only stem from the breakup message he'd sent.

After sending the message that day, my friend muted his phone. When it was over, he saw a slew of missed calls. He realized something was wrong and wanted to explain to his sister-in-law, but then the doomsday arrived and the signal completely collapsed.

He explained all this now, just hoping that his sister-in-law would blame his brother less.

Xu Zhou let go of Xunyou's hand.

He felt as if his throat was strangled, his heart sank to the bottom, and he couldn't speak: "Sister-in-law..."

It's over.

This was the only thought left in Xunyou's mind.

Xu Zhou looked at him and said calmly, "You stay home and don't go out. I'll go find your brother."

"...Okay." Xunyou wanted to push for it again, but seeing Xu Zhou's expressionless face and the look as if he didn't want to hear anything more from him, he pursed his lips and could only agree in the end.

Xunyou watched Xu Zhou's back as he left, and prayed silently in his heart, hoping that his sister-in-law would still want his brother.

Xu Zhou walked out of the yard quickly.

System: "Are you angry?"

"No." Xu Zhou was very calm. "Help me navigate to Xunchun's location."

"What a joke this kid is! He can even use this kind of words to play games. He should be taught a lesson..." The system scolded Xunyou while navigating.

Xu Zhou didn't say anything, remaining silent as gold, and followed the systematic route to look for Chun.

If she was angry, she wasn't very angry.

After realizing it was a misunderstanding, she even felt a little relieved, relieved that those fantasies hadn't happened and they were all fine. But it was wrong for Xunyou to joke about breaking up so casually, and she was really angry about that. Regardless of whether they were playing a game or not, this kind of thinking was wrong, and no one would appreciate such a joke.

Not only love, but any relationship should not be used as an excuse to do hurtful things.

However, it’s better to leave the task of teaching Xunyou a lesson to Xunchun.

Xunchun, he really will take action.

Xu Zhou didn't feel sorry for Xunyou at all.

However, she didn't come out entirely for this matter. Xunyou said, "He left in a hurry that day," and this was the focus of her attention.

Xunyou's presence at home meant nothing had happened to his father; otherwise, he wouldn't have stayed home so peacefully playing Truth or Dare with his friends. The only thing that could have caused Xunchun to rush out in such a hurry was something serious happening to his mother, and it had to be something serious.

So when she asked him why he didn't tell her what he had done on the day they broke up, she almost knew the reason.

The navigation shows that Xunchun is on the way back.

From a distance, Xu Zhou saw Xunchun.

The sun jumped out from behind Xunchun, and the orange light blurred his outline. He seemed to be surrounded by a halo. He carried a bag in one hand and flowers in the other, and slowly walked towards her.

Xu Zhou calmed down. She took a few small steps and finally ran towards him.

The sound of the wind in his ears gradually faded until it was replaced by the sound of his heartbeat. He steadily caught her as she rushed towards him.

Xu Zhou hugged Xun Chun's waist and raised her head from his arms. His eyes were bright, and he was very happy to see her. Her heart softened immediately, and she whispered, "Your mother is always by your side, just like my own parents."

Xunchun was so stunned the moment she finished speaking that she didn't even notice the bag she was holding had fallen to the ground. He was stunned for a few seconds before hugging Xuzhou tightly. He understood what she meant; she had really guessed it.

He buried his head in her shoulder. Where she couldn't see, his eyes were red. His voice was muffled, with a hint of tears: "On the doomsday, I was waiting outside for her surgery, but she died on the operating table..."

Xu Zhou raised his hand and patted his back to soothe his trembling.

She knew why he didn't say it. There was no hidden reason, but he just didn't want her to fall into the sorrow of her parents' death and have to comfort him again.

She only had to be sad once.

He just wanted to wait until the time was right, until he had digested the pain of losing his loved ones, and then tell her lightly that his family was gone too, but she didn't need to comfort him because it was all in the past.

When Xunyou said that, she understood everything.

They knew each other too well.

He knew that she would know as soon as he said the first sentence, so he chose not to say it.

But it doesn't matter.

Xu Zhou returned and hugged Xunchun.

21:59

The light on the operating room door went out.

The door opened and the doctor came out: "I'm sorry, we tried our best."

22:00

Tick-tock, the clock in the corridor jumped to ten o'clock in the evening.

Xunchun's pupils shrank slightly, and he unconsciously took a half step back, lowering his head. His bangs covered his eyes, making it impossible to see his expression. At the same time, the man beside him had already rushed into the operating room—he succeeded. The lights in the hospital suddenly went out, and the corridor was plunged into endless darkness. Screams followed, and panic quickly spread throughout the hospital.

Zombies are rioting, and no one knows the end of the world is coming.

The doctor who turned into a zombie roared and pounced on Xunchun.

Xunchun reacted quickly and dodged sideways, kicked the doctor away, and rushed into the operating room based on his memory before the darkness. At the same time, several figures ran out from inside.

He could only see outlines with his night vision, and he moved forward by feeling the wall until he saw the operating table. There was a figure squatting there. It was his mother's current husband, the man who rushed in without hesitation after hearing the doctor's words.

Xunchun walked towards the operating table.

Suddenly, he felt pain in his right leg and then his consciousness began to blur.

"Clang."

He fell to the ground. A second before he hit the ground, his hand just touched the white cloth, and the cloth slipped down, covering half of his body.
