Chapter 21 First Ward Rounds

Amidst the applause, Chen Xia bowed to everyone and said modestly:

"I'm new here, uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters, please take good care of me. I'll treat everyone to popsicles before I get off work in the evening."

This kind of self-introduction made everyone feel very funny, and the applause became even louder.

Gu Lin now liked Chen Xia because she loved sweets the most, including popsicles and cakes. However, her old man didn't let her eat too much, saying that it would make her gain weight.

This time someone treated her to popsicles, so of course she had to show her support. She also planned to use her little charm to influence the new recruit and get him to treat her more often in the future.

Zhang Li was indeed a great assist, she asked,

"Chen Xia, you were born in 1962, right? Then you and Gu Lin are the two youngest comrades in our department. Gu Lin, when was your birthday?"

"Oh, I was born on August 16, 1962."

Chen Xia stretched her head and looked at Gu Lin who was not far away. "What a coincidence! I was born on August 13th. I was so scared! Finally, I don't have to be the last one in the family. I have a little sister."

Everyone burst into laughter again. Gu Lin glared at Chen Xia and waved his fist.

Ren Yuanfei was very happy to see Chen Xia quickly getting along with everyone, so he clapped his hands and said:

"Then let's start today's ward rounds. Chen Xia and I will be in one group, Dr. Zhang will be in another, and Dr. Liu will be in another."

Chen Xia is not a real doctor now, so he does not have the right to prescribe. His status is similar to that of an intern, which even makes him laugh.

Back then, he was the teaching instructor of the department, and people called him "teacher" wherever he went. Unexpectedly, after his rebirth, he became an intern at the lowest level again.

An intern should have the awareness of an intern. Chen Xia followed a group of doctors obediently, holding a thick stack of hospital records.

His duty was to promptly take out the patient's medical records whenever a doctor visited a bed. He also had to be familiar with the patient's current medical history, test results, medications, course of illness, etc. This allowed him to answer questions from senior doctors at any time.

Chen Xia had been a doctor for over a decade, so he had a solid foundation. So whenever Ren Yuanfei was asking about the patient's condition or transferring patients, he would quickly check on the next patient's condition.

Fortunately, the hospitalization records of this era are simple and clear at a glance, allowing Chen Xia to memorize them in the shortest time.

After Ren Yuanfei entered the working state, he forgot that Chen Xia was not a professional. He walked up to a patient as usual and asked:

"What's the condition of this patient?"

Chen Xia immediately answered roughly:

"The patient, a 20-year-old male, was admitted to the hospital due to high fever for three days, accompanied by cough and sputum, occasional chest pain, aches and weakness in the limbs. His blood test results were normal upon admission, and a chest X-ray showed thickening of the markings on both lungs.

He was admitted to the hospital with influenza and was given analgin to reduce fever, vitamin C and potassium chloride intravenous drip for fluid replacement, and penicillin intravenous drip twice a day to prevent infection.

Everyone looked at Chen Xia, wondering if this kid was really in the infectious disease ward for the first time?

He was able to explain the medical records clearly and in a coherent manner, and he understood them better than the residents.

Ren Yuan didn't think too much about it. He lifted up the patient's clothes and listened with a stethoscope. Then several residents also went to listen, and finally asked Chen Xia to listen as well.

Chen Xia heard that both lungs were clearly filled with moist rales. He frowned and said, "There are complications. Pneumonia."

Ren Yuanfei asked with a half-smile, "Did you hear that?"

"Obviously, we should get an X-ray to confirm the diagnosis and a blood test. Flu complicated by pneumonia often leads to breathing difficulties and persistent high fever. So..."

Because of the presence of the patient and his family, Chen Xia didn't dare to continue, but the doctors present all understood the meaning of his words.

Ren Yuanfei was surprised. He was convinced that Chen Xia had really been taught relevant medical knowledge by Chen Bingkun at home. Otherwise, how could he speak so clearly and even know that pneumonic influenza has a poor prognosis and a high mortality rate.

Gu Lin followed the head nurse and happened to come here to tidy up the beds. When she heard Chen Xia talking over there, she couldn't help but be a little surprised.

Seeing Gu Lin's surprised expression, Head Nurse Ding bumped her shoulder and jokingly said:

"How's it going? Comrade Xiao Chen is pretty good. Do you want me to help you get him?"

Gu Lin wasn't embarrassed at all, she just smacked her lips and said, "Not bad, but far from excellent. I'm going to marry a hero."

"You can be so conceited all the time. You won't have time to cry when you become an old maid."

Chen Xia's conversation with the doctors hadn't finished yet. When the doctors came out of the ward, Ren Yuanfei began to investigate again:

"Then tell me, what is the etiology of influenza? What are the sources of infection and transmission routes?"

"Influenza is essentially a viral infection belonging to the Orthomyxoviridae family and an RNA virus. The main source of infection is influenza patients or those who are latently infected, and they are still contagious even during the incubation period.

The main route of transmission is direct transmission between people through droplets, but it can also be transmitted indirectly through contaminated hands, daily utensils, etc. Influenza A and B are the most common.

"Regarding the patient just now, what are your thoughts on the treatment and prognosis?"

"I think adamantane may not be very effective and has significant side effects. The most important thing for this patient right now is antiviral treatment, and oseltamivir is essential.

At the same time, symptomatic treatments such as antibiotics for infection, fluid and electrolyte supplementation, and fever reduction are used.

"Your treatment plan is fine, but what is oseltamivir? Why haven't I heard of it?"
