Chapter 13 Alive

"Woo~" The station has arrived, and people carrying large and small bags rush out. Relying on his agility and light luggage, he squeezed through the crowd and got onto the platform.

It was still dark, and the platform was bustling with people leaving the station with bags and passengers chatting loudly. Following the crowd out of the station, I saw the words "Shanghai Station" gleaming brightly in the darkness.

I found a long-distance bus to Nanqiao Bus Station, bought my ticket, and boarded. I didn't dare sleep, as I was unfamiliar with the area. I figured I'd go to the electromechanical factory first to finalize the things the company needed, so I'd have more free time the rest of the time.

The car was shaking so badly that I took out some cooling oil and rubbed it on my temples. My mistake: I forgot to take motion sickness medicine before getting on the bus.

She couldn't understand a word of the chatter on the train; she was the only one from outside Shanghai. The conductor announced each stop in Mandarin with a thick Shanghainese accent.

Someone probably asked, and the conductor said something in response, but she didn't understand. She guessed she was saying she didn't understand the station announcements or something. Because after the conductor finished speaking, everyone smiled at her.

The first bus left early, so there were fewer people. After stopping and starting several times, they finally arrived at Nanqiao Bus Station. She got off the bus and squatted on the roadside for a while. If she didn't get there sooner, she would vomit.

My stomach was churning, and I looked around to see if there was anyone around. I took out a popsicle from the space and took a quick bite.

The coolness was much more comfortable, and I put the remaining half of the popsicle back. This place is crowded, and I was afraid of being seen.

After a 10-minute walk, I saw the main gate of the electromechanical factory. I handed over my letter of introduction at the guardhouse, and the security officer took me directly to the sales office with ginger tea.

It's a planned economy, a seller's market. I knocked on the office door and entered. There was only a man with side-parted hair, a white shirt, and glasses.

"Hello, leader. I am Jiang Cha from the purchasing department of the steel plant. Hello! This is my letter of introduction and work permit," the man took it and looked at the contents carefully.

"Hello, Comrade Jiang. I am the deputy section chief of the sales department of the machinery factory. My last name is Meng." Deputy Section Chief Meng returned her ID and letter of introduction to her.

"Deputy Section Chief Meng, this is the case. Our unit needs micro-motor bearings produced by your factory. The specific models are on this list. Please take a look." I handed over the purchase document and watched him flipping through the inventory list.

"We need a week to prepare the goods, and the price will remain the same. You can take the order back and pick up the goods with the receipt." Deputy Section Chief Meng didn't say anything nonsense, and quickly completed the procedures and got the job done.

Coming out of the electromechanical plant, I couldn't believe it was over so quickly. Jiang Cha tried to arrange a meal, but Deputy Section Chief Meng flatly declined. He said there were a few people waiting in line behind him, and while he appreciated the kindness, he didn't need anything else.

Then I took a bus to Nanjing Road. It was almost dinner time when I got off. First, I found a place to stay at a state-owned guesthouse. I handed over a letter of introduction, paid a 50-cent deposit, and paid one yuan for the room.

I walked around the room, thermos in hand. There was a wooden single bed, a table and chairs in the corner, and a mirror on the wall. The sheets and duvet cover looked worn, but they were clean to the naked eye.

I put the kettle on the table and locked the door with my key. At the end of the corridor were the toilet and the bathroom. When I pushed the door open, I saw the main road. It was time to get off work, and the streets were full of people.

The state-owned restaurant was nearby and packed at lunchtime. I ordered braised pork and chicken with greens, along with a bowl of rice. It cost 1.6 yuan, three taels of grain coupons, and one jin of meat coupons.

The braised pork in Shanghai is a little sweeter, the broth is thicker, and there are fewer spices. It is so delicious that you must take it home.

After dinner, I didn’t go anywhere and went back to sleep obediently. I didn’t sleep well since last night, and I ran around all day today. I was so sleepy that I couldn’t open my eyes. I went back to the guesthouse, opened the door and went into the room.

Take out a sack full of corn from the space (the sack is about 120 pounds full), put it directly behind the door, and then insert the bolt. When you go out, please pay attention to safety

She spread her own bedding on the bed. This set of bedding was bought when she was in college and she had used it for almost four years. She went back to her space to take a shower and change clothes, then came out and went straight to bed.

Why not sleep in the space? There are people checking on me at any time, but I can't hear them if I'm asleep inside. Sure enough, there was a knock on the door in the middle of the night. I answered it without opening it, and slept until noon.

After a good sleep, I felt refreshed. I got up and packed my things, including the bedding and corn. I washed and changed clothes in the space, and checked out with my bag and thermos.

There are still three and a half days left in the holiday, and one more day if you include the weekend. The famous Nanjing Road is only two stops away by tram.

The streets were packed with people, so I stopped by a street restaurant to have some scallion oil noodles. The simple combination of scallions, soy sauce, and sugar blended beautifully, leaving a delicious flavor.

I took out the lunch box from my bag and packed two more to go. I was determined not to miss out on such delicious food. Last time I had a dinner at Daku, I prepared more than ten white aluminum lunch boxes.

I bought them at different supply and marketing cooperatives on my way home from get off work every day, three industrial coupons for 1.4 yuan each. Now I have a pile of lunch boxes in my space, ready to fill with delicious food at any time.

Shanghai's No. 1 Department Store was the most fashionable place in this era. Following the crowd inside, one would find a floor full of tobacco, alcohol, tea, and various cakes, candies, and chocolates.

Squeeze to the front, 5 catties of White Rabbit, 2.5 yuan per catty, 5 tin boxes of Shanghai candies, 2 catties of chocolate, 4 yuan per catty, 5 catties of mixed candy, 0.8 yuan per catty. 10 catties of candy tickets, high-end chocolate and tin box candy don't require tickets.

The salesperson was used to it; it was common for people from other places who came to buy things there. Everyone had a few relatives, so bringing things with them on business trips was common.

At the tobacco and alcohol counter, Moutai is 8 yuan a bottle, Wuliangye is 5.5 yuan a bottle, Fenjiu is 5 yuan a bottle, and Shikumen yellow wine is 3.5 yuan. I ordered 10 bottles of each (the prices are made up).

They stuffed the candy into the space, packed a few bottles into the bag, and found a big box for the rest. They then carried the ginger tea out of the department store first.

I walked to the back of the building, where there was a blind spot near the back door. I quickly put all the wine into the space. I spread my hair and braided it into a braid. I threw my bag into the space and changed into a green schoolbag.
