Chapter 61: Unpredictable

This business trip went incredibly smoothly, with absolutely no incidents. Upon arriving in the capital, Jiang Cha found it too peaceful to be used to.

I called my workplace to let them know the goods had arrived and I needed to go back the next morning to submit the delivery note. I returned home with so many bags and so small, I was so tired I couldn't even move my fingers, and I still had to clean up the house.

Luckily, we had covered the house with cloth before I left for the trip, so I pulled it off and stuffed it into the washing machine. A simple wipe and sweep was all that was needed.

After hanging up all the laundry and furniture covers, I went to bed without dinner. I could have taken another day off, but I had to get up so early to go to work and hand in the delivery order.

Then she took the receipt to the accounting office for reimbursement. Jiang Cha, who had nothing to do, went to the state-owned restaurant to find Xiao Tong. They hadn't seen each other for a long time.

Then I saw an unfamiliar older woman at the counter. Could it be that the child was having a day off today?

'Hello, is the child off today?'

She got a cold eye from her elder sister, and the contemptuous look made her feel confused.

"You're here to look for bad guys. Who are you to her? Are you in league with them?"

This is not right. Xiaotong's second uncle is the secretary. How could he become a bad element?

"Sister, you don't know, but this little girl hasn't paid me for the clothes I asked her to bring her. I just got back from a business trip, and I thought I'd ask her for the money. It's quite a bit, 26 yuan and 7 feet of cloth coupons."

Now that I've been labeled a bad element, where can I find someone? All my money will be wasted. What should I do? I'm so angry!

When he heard that she was here to collect a debt, he smiled and said to her, "I thought you were in league with the bad guys. If you're here to collect a debt, go find her at her house. She's been home these past two days, but it's hard to say what will happen in a few days."

"Thank you, sister. I'm lucky to have met someone as kind-hearted as you. Otherwise, my money would have been wasted. And I'm not a bad person. I'm a family member of a military martyr."

He looked at his elder sister with a firm stand, as if he could perform a dance of loyalty at any time.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I was wrong, don't be angry! I'll give you Xiaotong's address, go to her house to find her. Now I definitely don't dare to owe you money."

What's so great about being so arrogant now that your backer has fallen? Their family lives in the nearby Xiangyang Brigade. You'll know everything if you ask the Lao Tong family. This family used to be so arrogant, but now that they've been defeated, you can definitely get them to pay you back.

Seeing her elder sister gritting her teeth, she felt for the first time that the past ten years had not been so peaceful. She had just ignored it and even thought it was no big deal.

At this moment, I just wanted to go see the little boy, not knowing what was going on. I took the bus to Xiangyang Brigade. At that time, the whole country was full of Xiangyang Brigades and Hongqi Brigades.

At the "information center" at the entrance of the village, I learned that Lao Tong's family lived at the very back of the village. Their old big house had been taken over, and now the whole family lived in the innermost part of the village, near a former dilapidated temple.

Knowing that she was there to collect a debt, these people scolded the girl from the Tong family several times, saying that she was a spendthrift and spent so much money on clothes.

I walked through the village to the innermost part. There was a dilapidated temple with newly repaired windows and doors. A fence made of branches blocked the windows.

"Little boy, little boy, come out here! If I hadn't asked around, I'd have known you were planning to run away after owing the money. If you don't come out, I'll go in and smash it up!"

I was afraid someone would peek in, so I yelled loudly at the door. I also wanted to let people know that I didn't really owe any money.

"Stop yelling and let's go inside and talk, okay? Don't let anyone hear us. I'm begging you to help me."

The fat girl lost all her flesh and turned into a haggard little firewood girl. She really ignored it during this period. It would have been better if she had discovered it earlier.

Following her into the dilapidated temple, the creaky door barely closed. Jiang Cha leaned against the window and looked out. Sure enough, there was a figure swaying not far away.

He pulled the child over and stuffed a roll of banknotes into her hands. He kept yelling, "You think you can exchange these rags for my money and banknotes? You're dreaming! Aren't you going to the countryside?" "Where's the money? Give me the resettlement fee." Then he handed her the notebook.

I asked her to write down the address of the rural area and looked outside carefully. Perhaps because she heard that someone really came to collect the debt, the figure had already left.

She whispered to the little girl what was going on. Didn’t she have an uncle in the town? How could this happen?

The little boy cried and told her what had happened; 'My second uncle is the secretary. Some time ago, he held a meeting in the commune and criticized a village chief for withholding villagers' wages.

This person then framed my uncle, saying he was pro-Western and had capitalist tendencies. He just said, "So Westernized," and was paraded through the streets wearing a dunce cap, with a large wooden sign hung around his neck, the steel wire holding the sign digging into his flesh.

At the denunciation meeting, those he had helped, his former good friends, all passionately listed his crimes. They were beaten and kicked, and even pelted with stones. The village chief who had reported him even came up on the stage and forced him to do a "jet plane."

When we went home that night to see him, he didn't say anything, just staring blankly. That morning they came and paraded him through the streets, only to discover he wasn't home. They said he'd escaped overnight, a fugitive from justice, bound for a capitalist country. After searching for a long time, they finally realized he'd jumped into a well.

What did he do wrong? Such a good person, but a compliment made them so calculating. My family heard that my second uncle was in trouble and planned to report the situation to the higher authorities.

As a result, we were put under custody, and they said we were bad elements because we were influenced by capitalism. Our home was robbed and we were kicked out. I will be going to the countryside the day after tomorrow, and I don't know when we will see each other again.'

Jiang Cha had never thought that such a thing would happen around him. He knew that there were many unjust, false and wrongful cases, but this was treated like a child's play and someone was convicted of a crime. It was simply outrageous.
