Volume 1 Chapter 589 What the Gu Family Hides

Volume 1 Chapter 589 What the Gu Family Hides

Father Sheng breathed a sigh of relief. He couldn't drink a whole bottle. Fortunately, his mother-in-law came to deal with his father-in-law.

Otherwise, I might not be able to get up tomorrow.

Sheng Wanyan felt happy too when she saw her family members were happy and proud. Sometimes when your elders are proud of you, you can't help but hold your head high and wait for others to praise you.

That feeling is just great...

The house was bustling with activity, but the days were slowly passing by.

———

Time flies, and it is already 1980.

The Gu family is very lively today. All of Uncle Gu's family have returned to Kyoto to celebrate the New Year.

Gu Tong's family also returned to Kyoto. All the younger generations in the family were present. Grandpa Gu and Grandma Gu seemed to be living in a paradise.

The younger generations in my family are well-behaved and sensible. Whenever I have something delicious or fun, I bring it back for them.

Yiyi is four years old now, and the twins are one year old. The children are growing up slowly.

Yi Yi can now speak fluently, his hands and feet are strong, and he goes out to play with his brothers and sisters everywhere.

As there are more children in the family, they play like little crazy kids and come back covered in dust every day.

The twins are the youngest children in the family and are a rare sight. Family members who come back to visit can't help but tease them.

Gu Tong's family lived in Gu's mother's yard, while Sheng Wanyan, the family of Gu's second uncle, let them live in his own yard.

We are all family, so there is nothing wrong with having fun.

Red couplets were posted at home, and every household went out to buy New Year's goods. Sheng Wanyan and Gu Tingxiao took everyone out, and there were many vendors selling New Year's goods on the road.

"Sugar man! Candied haws!"

The vendors kept shouting, the streets were bustling with people, everyone hung red lanterns and red peppers in their homes, and smoke was coming out of every house.

This era is full of the flavor of the New Year and the smell of fireworks.

"Mom, can you buy a candy man for me and my brothers and sisters?"

Now that she is at the age when she loves to eat sweets, Sheng Wanyan feels the festive atmosphere and looks at the bustling streets.

When I heard Yi Yi's question, I looked up and saw the sugar figures with various patterns on the vendor's shelf, and I became envious.

"Of course, everyone should be happy during the New Year."

"Thank you, Mom and Dad~"

Yi Yi took Gu Tingxiao and Sheng Wanyan's hands to buy candy figures, with patterns of dragons, rabbits, mice, and all kinds of other things.

I kept picking them out one by one and bought one for all my brothers and sisters.

"Lailaimaomao and Chouwa can't eat with their teeth now."

"Choose gifts for your brothers one by one?"

They nodded one by one, and on the way back they chose toys for their younger brothers, and Sheng Wanyan bought a lot of food made by the common people themselves.

Laba garlic, honey offerings, peach cakes, trough cakes, donkey rolls, snack boxes, honey three knives, sugar melons...

Sheng Wanyan bought all the cigarettes and took them back. These things are absolutely indispensable for the New Year in Kyoto.

On New Year’s Eve, the children have the reunion dinner and happily receive red envelopes. The men stay up all night and the whole courtyard is filled with the sound of firecrackers at midnight.

The children were frightened awake and fell asleep again. The women got up early on New Year's Day to prepare things for the new year.

Chickens, geese and fish were slaughtered in the backyard. They could not be chopped into pieces and had to be left whole as tribute to the men in the family.

After everything is prepared, the men in the family bring sandalwood, red candles, firecrackers, as well as chicken, duck, fish and meat, and carry them on a shoulder pole to worship the gods.

The women in the family prepare meals, and the men carry back offerings and continue to worship the land god and kitchen god of the family.

After the incense and paper money were burned and firecrackers were set off, the children in the family covered their ears and ran into the house.

The air was filled with the smell of firecracker smoke as the women in the house chopped and stir-fried the ingredients for the tribute in preparation for today's meal.

The children in the family all held a chicken leg or chicken wing, and were gnawing on duck feet, duck legs or duck wings at the door. They were also competing with the children in the neighborhood to see whose meat was bigger.

My mouth was full of oil and my hands were sticky, so I went home to wash my hands.

The children in the compound came to the house to wish a happy new year, and Sheng Wanyan followed Gu's mother to give candies to the children.

On the second day of the Chinese New Year, married girls returned to their parents' home, and the compound became more lively. Yi Yi went out again to recognize several younger sisters.

What Sheng Wanyan never expected was that today, Grandpa Gu and Grandma Gu actually made an important decision.

On the second day of the Lunar New Year, all the married daughters, sons-in-law, and men in the family were present.

After dinner, Grandpa Gu and Grandma Gu asked their son-in-law, granddaughter, and grandson-in-law to take the children out to play.

How could they dare not disobey Grandpa Gu's order? They all took their children outside to buy roast duck.

Grandpa Gu looked at the younger generations in the family, exchanged a glance with Grandma Gu, and then told everyone the main business.

"Everyone happens to be here today."

"Your father and I have something to tell you."

Grandma Gu looked at Father Gu, Second Uncle Gu, and Gu Tong. Father Gu and his two siblings always felt uneasy.

"Father and mother..."

The three siblings wanted to say something, but Grandpa Gu stopped them with his hand: "Listen to your mother."

Grandpa Gu's sharp eyes swept over the younger generations in the family. Gu Tingxiao and the others looked at their grandparents without expressing any opinions.

"Your father and I are old, and you are all grandparents now."

"Your father and I thought we'd divide up the things at home while you're all here."

Grandma Gu took out a list. Here were all the jewelry and antiques that the Gu family had hidden for so many years.

"These are all things your father and I have worked hard for."

"There are 5 boxes of jewellery, 7 boxes of gold bars, and 5 boxes of antiques."

"Grandchildren are something you as parents should worry about, we don't care that much."

"These things include two boxes of jewelry for the eldest and second son, three boxes of gold bars, and two and a half boxes of antique ornaments."

Grandma Gu looked around and was relieved to see that the younger generations in the family, as well as her two daughters-in-law and granddaughter-in-law, showed no dissatisfaction on their faces.

"The remaining box of jewels and gold bars were originally intended by your father and I to be Xiaotong's dowry."

"The world was bad back then, and we didn't talk about these things at home."

"Now that the country is open, you have all started your own families, and your children have achieved success."

"You can take these things back and keep them. As for how to divide and arrange them, you can decide for yourselves."

Grandpa Gu and Grandma Gu looked at their three children. Father Gu had already divided the property among his sons.

Naturally, these things should be divided equally among your children. There is no need to keep them all in your own hands.

By dividing them up, everyone won't have to worry about the things in their parents' hands, and there won't be any shameful things happening in the future.

Gu's father and second uncle immediately expressed their intention to divide the shares among their own children. How Gu Tong arranged his own share was up to him.

Father Gu and Second Uncle Gu divided it equally among their sons, but gave nothing to their daughter.
