Chapter 1 Being Struck by Lightning

"Buzzing..."

Xiao Yunying, who was sleeping, was awakened by the phone next to her pillow. She groped around with her eyes closed, picked up the phone, glanced at the caller ID, and answered the call.

"Hello, dear Mom."

A familiar voice came through the phone: "Why does your voice sound like that? It's the weekend, don't tell me you slept all day."

"I had a slight cold, and I wanted to lie down for a while at noon, but I ended up falling asleep."

"You caught a cold? How did you get it? Did you take any medicine?"

"We're out of medicine at home."

“This child, if you don’t have any, go buy some. I told you a couple of days ago that it’s snowing where you are, so wear more layers. Don’t just think about looking good and wearing so little. You don’t realize it now because you’re young, but when you get old, all sorts of illnesses will come your way…”

Thousands of words about the typical nagging of mothers everywhere are omitted here, occasionally interspersed with questions from Dad not far away, but unfortunately Mom ignores him.

Xiao Yunying wasn't annoyed at all. She listened patiently, and replied with a smile to show that she had taken it to heart.

Finally, Dad couldn't take it anymore and interrupted Mom's long-winded explanation:

"Alright, stop nagging. Ask the child when they're coming home."

A "smack" came from the phone, followed by my mother's domineering voice: "Dare to say I'm long-winded? Go away, stay away from me, you're interrupting my conversation with the kids."

Even though Xiao Yunying wasn't there, she could imagine her father clutching his arm and shuffling to the side, and the corners of her mouth curved upwards even wider.

"Yunyun, there are less than two months until Chinese New Year. When are you coming home?"

"The company has already issued a notice, and I have also applied for annual leave. I will be able to go back in another month and stay at home for a while longer."

"Then remember to buy your tickets in advance, so you don't miss out."

"Don't worry, Mom, I remember."

"Alright, Mom won't say anymore. It's almost six o'clock. Get up and make something to eat, then hurry up and buy some medicine. Don't take this cold lightly, or it might turn into pneumonia."

"Okay, bye-bye Mom."

After hanging up the phone, Xiao Yunying glanced out the window; it was already dark.

The light shining through the lamps revealed the gently falling snowflakes.

"It's snowing again."

The snow isn't too heavy yet, so I gave up on the idea of using my phone to call a delivery service and decided to go myself.

Anyway, there's a pharmacy in the neighborhood, it's not a long walk away.

I lazed around in bed for a while, then got up to brush my teeth, wash my face, and get dressed. I wrapped myself up in layers of thermal underwear, a wool sweater, a down jacket, cotton socks, a scarf, and gloves, making myself look like a ball. I put on a mask, grabbed my phone and keys, and went out.

It took less than ten minutes to walk to the pharmacy. I bought five boxes of anti-inflammatory medicine, three boxes of cold medicine, and two boxes of cold medicine granules, like I was on a bulk purchase.

After leaving the pharmacy, there was a large supermarket right next door. Xiao Yunying thought for a moment and realized that she didn't seem to have any food left at home, so she went to the supermarket for a stroll. Half an hour later, she came out carrying a bag of things.

The snow had stopped, but the wind was stronger than before, and dark, heavy clouds hung in the sky, looking as if they were about to fall.

There was no one on the street, and Xiao Yunying felt a little scared. She stood at the supermarket entrance, put on gloves, and prepared to go home.

Xiao Yunying's phone beeped with a message notification. She glanced at the message; it was from her mother asking if she had taken her medicine. She couldn't skip it just because she was lazy or because the medicine tasted bitter.

No wonder her mother was so nervous. Xiao Yunying was a premature baby, born by cesarean section at just over seven months due to maternal reasons, and her body had been weak since childhood.

I suffer from heatstroke in summer and colds in winter, and wear a mask all year round because of allergies and asthma.

She was often sick when she was a child. While other children went to school most often, she went to the hospital most often.

He's a real medicine addict.

Her family once thought she wouldn't survive, but thankfully she was strong enough, and although she stumbled along the way, she successfully grew up.

My body is stronger than when I was a child, but still weaker than the average person.

For most people, it's just a minor cold; some might even recover on their own in a couple of days without needing any medication.

For her, enduring this for a week wouldn't be good, and it might even worsen.

I put down the bag, took out the medicine box, took a picture, sent it over, and replied that I had just bought it and was on my way home.

A bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a deafening clap of thunder. Startled, her hand trembled, and her phone fell to the ground, bouncing on the steps before sliding a considerable distance across the icy surface.

It took Xiao Yunying several seconds to come to her senses. She patted her chest and said, "What kind of weather is this? It scared me to death."

The thunder was so loud in the dead of winter, it felt like it was exploding right next to my ears.

As I went down the steps to pick up my phone and hurry home, another bolt of lightning flashed, followed by an even louder clap of thunder.

Xiao Yunying flinched and looked in the direction of the flash.

A large, gleaming sphere rolled toward her in the wind from a short distance away.

Rolling mine!

The moment the word popped into her mind, Xiao Yunying forgot about her dropped phone and the things she had just bought, and ran towards the supermarket.

He was wailing in his heart, "What grudge did I hold against you? Why am I being chased and struck by lightning?"

The moment she stepped onto the stairs and pushed open the door, she felt something touch her back, a flash of white light appeared before her eyes, and Xiao Yunying was plunged into complete darkness.
