Chapter 21 Raising a Few Ungrateful People

Xiao Yunying went inside, put down her basket, and closed the door, no longer paying attention to the commotion outside.

Mu Lianrong gently placed Luo Xin on the bed and pulled a corner of the blanket to cover her stomach.

Turning around and seeing the bleeding teeth marks on her daughter's wrist, she angrily slapped her leg.

"Why are you working yourself to death to support these ungrateful wretches? Now they dare to lay a hand on you."

Xiao Yunying felt aggrieved. She was wronged and bitten for no reason. If it were someone her age, she could fight back, but the other party was a group of children.

The main issue isn't even his own biological child; otherwise, he could have given the child a beating to vent his anger.

“Daughter, I’m talking to you. Why don’t we just ignore these brats and come home with me? I’ll take care of you.”

For Xiao Yunying, the most beautiful words in the world are not "I love you," but "I will take care of you."

With a mother who cares about her, believes in her, and supports her at all times, Xiao Yunying didn't feel so aggrieved about what had just happened.

Xiao Yunying deliberately said, "Mother is willing to raise me because I am her daughter. But what if my brothers and sisters-in-law are unwilling?"

"You're still their own sister, how dare they object? I'm the one in charge of this family, and they can't disobey me. If they do, I'll break their legs!"

Xiao Yunying couldn't help but chuckle: "Mother is really fierce."

“Even when I’m being this fierce, you’re never afraid of me or listen to me.”

Mu Lianrong tapped her daughter's forehead with exasperation: "Look at you, is that Luo Sheng really that good? He made you live like a widow for two years. How much longer are you going to stay for him?"

Xiao Yunying wrinkled her nose and rubbed her forehead: "I'm not doing this for him. I'm staying here now only for the child."

"What's so good about those brats? They're all ingrates."

Xiao Yunying awkwardly touched her nose: "It's all a misunderstanding. They thought I sold Xin'er."

Mu Lianrong rolled her eyes at her: "Don't try to make amends for them. In the end, they never truly considered you their mother."

Look at other families, which parent hasn't hit their child, especially a boy? Six or seven years old is when they're most rebellious. They get a small beating every three days and a big beating every five days. And you never hear of any kid holding a grudge against their parents or daring to hit them.

"If it's not their biological child, it's not their biological child; no matter how long you raise it, you'll never truly tame it."

"Mother, keep your voice down, don't wake Xin'er up."

Luo Xin turned over. Mu Lianrong didn't speak again. After waiting a while and confirming that the little girl hadn't woken up, Mu Lianrong gritted her teeth and said:

"You care so much about this little girl's sleep, why don't you care about yourself? You bit her so hard, doesn't it hurt?"

Xiao Yunying told the truth: "It hurt quite a bit just now, but it doesn't hurt as much now."

"Come on, let me take you to see your third grandfather and buy some medicine to apply so that it won't leave a scar."

"Mother, it's not that serious. It's just a minor injury. It will heal in a few days and won't leave a scar."

Luo Chen's fingernails weren't long, and the pinch marks looked quite frightening, but the injury wasn't serious; it was just a minor scratch.

The bite marks were the same; they were from through the clothes, and only the area around the front teeth bled slightly. The rest of the marks just looked scary.

"If you don't want to go, then don't go. Don't regret it later if you have a scar."

Xiao Yunying smiled slightly and changed the subject, asking, "Mother, what are you doing with that basket of eggs?"

"I just wanted to get you some eggs to help you recover. Yesterday afternoon, I sent the eggs laid by our hens to the Lin family as a thank-you gift. I picked up some this morning. Keep them for yourself, and I'll buy you more when you've finished them."

"What gift? Is there some happy occasion in the village?"

Mu Lianrong then remembered: "Oh right, you don't know yet. You were missing for two days and two nights, and none of your rascals even bothered to tell me. It was Lin Dalang who found you unconscious in the mountains while chopping firewood. He cut branches to put under you and dragged you back."

"And you too, what were you doing going to West Mountain to dig for wild vegetables? That's where the wild animals are most prevalent, and few people go there normally. If it weren't for the proximity of Linshitu, I would have gone to the mountain behind my house, and while chopping firewood, I happened to see a pheasant chasing after you. You might still be lying on that West Mountain right now."

Xiao Yunying touched her nose guiltily again: "I went there because there were fewer people there, and there were more wild vegetables."

Mu Lianrong didn't even bother to roll her eyes. How could she not know her daughter's personality? It was true that there were plenty of wild vegetables, but the main reason was to avoid having too many people.

My daughter doesn't want to be seen by others, and she doesn't want to hear those people say sarcastic or mocking things.

Some things are better understood than explained in detail.

Mu Lianrong instructed, "Although I have already thanked them, it was a life-saving grace after all. You should also go and thank them, and bring them something. It doesn't have to be too expensive; the sentiment is enough."

"I understand, Mother. Which Lin family is it?"

"The Lin family, who make tofu, are located on the west side of the village."

"I understand. I just happened to go into town today and bought some meat. I'll go thank them in a bit."

"As long as you know what's going on, that's fine. By the way, I see you just got back, have you eaten yet?"

"Not yet, Mom. Oh, right, I bought some meat buns."

Xiao Yunying took out two oil paper packages from her basket. They were already a little cold. She handed one of the packages over and said, "Mother, take some back and eat it."

"What time is it? We haven't had lunch yet."

Xiao Yunying smiled sheepishly: "I missed the oxcart, so I walked back and was a little late."

“It’s not easy to get from the city to our village. You’ve never walked this far before. You must be exhausted. No wonder this little girl is sleeping so soundly. Hurry up and eat, and rest for a while after you finish eating. I’m going back now.”

Xiao Yunying stopped bringing up the matter of the steamed buns; in her eyes, they were really nothing special.

She had already thought of a way to make a little money so that she could buy some nice things for her parents tomorrow.

There's plenty of time; a little delay won't make a difference.
