The sun was shining brightly that day, and the weather was perfect.
Xiao Yunying took a stroll around the greenhouse, where her parents had already diligently taken care of everything for her, making her feel quite embarrassed.
She said that her parents did all the work on the vegetable greenhouse she built.
She called her mother and two sisters-in-law over and taught them how to make sausages and pickles.
Several people were busy in the kitchen when Zhang asked, "Is this how you made the pure meat sausage you gave us?"
"Pure meat sausages are made from fresh meat and don't keep well. These sausages are dried out, and since it will get even colder in a few days, they can be stored for longer."
She had originally planned to have her sisters-in-law make pure meat sausages to sell in the city, but it was the season and it was going to snow in a few days. She remembered that it snowed quite heavily here, so the sausages wouldn't last long. She didn't want her family to suffer like that.
Zhang was tired of praising Xiao Yunying's intelligence.
Xiao Yunying also taught them how to make pickled garlic, pickled peppers, sauerkraut, and other kinds of pickled vegetables. Her mother kept talking about how much money she would have to spend on seasonings while she diligently learned how to make them and what ingredients to use.
Xiao Yunying answered the question with a smile, without teasing her mother, lest she get angry.
Several people spent the afternoon making sausages out of the meat she had previously marinated so her mother could take them home to eat.
"This minced meat needs to be marinated for five or six hours to absorb the flavor. It can't be made now. Take these back with you, Mother. Don't rush to eat the sausages that have just been stuffed. Hang them on a shady, well-ventilated roof beam for five or six days to dry. Once they're dry and hard, they're ready to eat. Before eating, wash off any surface dust and steam them with rice or steamed buns."
"There's so much meat, you can keep it for yourself."
Xiao Yunying pointed to the two bowls of minced meat on the table: "I have two more big bowls here, enough to eat. It's not cold now since it's not snowing, and it will spoil if left too long."
Xiao Yunying placed the bowl of sausages directly into Mu Lianrong's arms, gave the other two bowls to her two sisters-in-law, and gently pushed her mother to walk out.
"It's getting late. Mother and my sisters-in-law still have to go back to cook for Father and my brother, so I won't stay any longer or see you off."
After seeing me out the door, he said, "Don't forget to bring the basin back to me."
Then he closed the door.
Mu Lianrong, still holding the basin, hadn't reacted yet when Zhang Shi said with a smile, "Judging from this, people who know the situation would think Yunying is bringing meat for her mother, but those who don't would think we've been kicked out."
"This child, really." Mu Lianrong weighed the wooden basin in her hand; it was too heavy. "The door is closed; let's go back."
Xiao Yunying saw her mother and sisters-in-law leave through the crack in the door before locking the door and returning to the kitchen.
I took a box of ribbonfish from the supermarket to thaw. Luo Li said this morning that she wanted to eat fish. She was getting tired of freshwater fish, so she wanted to get some sea fish to eat instead.
How to explain its origins is a problem for Luo Chen and Luo Yang to consider; she has no worries about that.
Luo Xin peeked out from the doorway and said, "Mom, did you forget to tell Grandma about the kitten?"
"Oh dear, look at my memory, I've completely forgotten."
Xiao Yunying glanced at the sky: "It's getting cold now, so there probably aren't any kittens left. I'll talk to Grandma tomorrow and ask her to keep an eye out for any that come along, okay?"
"Alright, Mother, don't forget Third Brother's puppy."
"Little guy, you still remember your third brother. I know, if you remember the kitten, you won't forget the puppy. Listen for any noises, and call me when your brothers come back with the grass bait."
"Then I'll wait on the swing in the yard."
"Go."
Not long after, Xiao Yunying heard Luo Xin calling her, saying that her brothers had returned.
She wiped the water off her hands, went to the door, and opened the latch, where she saw Luo Li and Luo Chen each holding a small dog.
"Where did you get those puppies?"
It's already this season, and animals should have long passed their mating season, so how could there be puppies being born?
Xiao Yunying held one up in both hands. It really was a little cub. Its fur was damp and not completely dry. It was whimpering in her hands, its eyes were not open, and even its umbilical cord was wet.
Luo Yang put down his basket: "I found it in the grass at the foot of the mountain. Ali insisted on bringing it back. We waited for a while, but no big dog came, so we had to bring it back."
Xiao Yunying understood: "It was probably born from a stray dog in the neighborhood."
Luo Li hugged the puppy tightly: "Mom, can we keep them?"
"You want to keep them?"
Luo Li hugged her even tighter: "Mother said she would buy two puppies to raise, and I can't go back on my word."
"Why are you so agitated? I didn't say I disagreed. From now on, you'll be in charge of feeding the puppies. Go to the storage room and get some old clothes to make a bed for them."
"Thank you, Mother. I will raise them to be plump and healthy."
Xiao Yunying said, "I keep puppies to guard the house, but you can't let them get so fat."
"Understood, I'll raise them to be more aggressive."
"They must have just been born, they're so tiny, I don't know if they'll survive. Come with me."
Xiao Yunying found some old clothes and laid them in the basket, then put the puppy inside: "Don't pull the umbilical cords on their bellies, they'll fall off on their own when they dry. Don't try to pry their eyes open either, they'll open on their own."
