Chapter 259 Compensation

Xiao Yunying held the rope with her left hand. She really didn't expect that the seemingly docile and harmless goat would suddenly burst out with such strength, directly pulling her, who weighed over 100 pounds, flying away.

The man in black listened carefully to the sound and turned to face Xiao Yunying: "Let's go to the clinic. I'll pay for the treatment."

“I’m not going. I just came back from the city. I promised the children I would go back early to cook for them. Going back to the city would just waste more time.”

Xiao Yunying patted the dirt off her clothes. It was her new cotton-padded coat, which she had only worn for a few days. "If you feel bad, you can compensate me with money. My cotton-padded coat is brand new."

"Alright, Wan Jun, give this young lady fifty taels of silver."

Fifty taels?

Xiao Yunying felt a little better, thinking that this person was sincere.

She didn't think fifty taels was a lot, because she could earn much more on her own, but she knew that for other ordinary farmers, such a windfall would be absolutely ecstatic.

A cotton-padded coat costs very little. Her bruises and scrapes, apart from causing extensive pain, were not serious as they didn't involve any broken bones. Fifty taels was already a lot of money.

Wan Jun whispered a reminder to him, "Master, we left in a hurry, and I didn't take much silver with me. We've used it all up along the way."

The man in black: "...How many are left?"

Wan Jun took out a money bag from his pocket and poured out two pieces of silver and a dozen copper coins.

Xiao Yunying glanced at it and realized that it didn't add up to five taels of silver.

Wan Jun glanced at Xiao Yunying and said, "There are still a little over four taels left, but we still have several days before we reach the capital. We'll need money on the way, so we can't give it all to this girl. Master, could you talk to her and give her two taels? I'll bring the rest to her after we finish our business."

Xiao Yunying sighed. This Wan Jun was really a simpleton. She wanted to remind him that what he thought was a quiet voice was actually quite loud, and she could hear every single word clearly.

"You don't need to pay any compensation, you can leave."

She valued the sincerity of the apology more than the money.

Although the man in black did not apologize, he showed sincerity in offering compensation. Otherwise, he would have simply ridden away instead of wasting his time with her.

Xiao Yunying led the sheep home, but Wan Jun stepped forward and said, "Miss, don't go. Let's make a deal. I'll give you two taels first, and I'll send you the remaining forty-eight taels later. Just tell me where you live."

"Come on, I don't care about fifty taels. Aren't you in a hurry? Hurry up and leave."

Just kidding. These two seem easy to talk to now, but who knows if they'll change their minds later.

Giving your home address to two men with long swords at their waists that look menacing is dangerous.

The man in black followed the sound and walked precisely to Xiao Yunying. He took a jade pendant from his waist and handed it to her, saying, "Here, this should be worth a lot of money."

Xiao Yunying shook her head, then, remembering that the other person couldn't see, gently pushed his hand away: "Really, you don't need to."

When I'm not so angry anymore, the man with his eyes covered by a black cloth looks much better to me than before.

The black cloth was quite wide, covering almost half of his face, and through the gaps in his nose, one could vaguely see that his fair skin was tinged with a bit of green.

The area around the eyes is a little bulging; is it from the herbal medicine applied? Xiao Yunying wondered to herself.

A gust of wind blew by, and the black-clad man's nostrils twitched slightly.

Is this refreshing fragrance wafting from this young lady?

"Wan Jun, give the jade pendant to this young lady, let's go."

"Yes, Master."

Wan Jun took the jade pendant, handed the reins of the black horse to the man in black, who nimbly mounted the horse and rode away without a word.

Wan Jun tossed the jade pendant into Xiao Yunying's arms, then mounted his horse. "Miss, this was given to me by my master. Please accept it. I'm truly sorry for causing you injury. We're leaving now, farewell."

After saying that, he rode off on his horse to catch up with his master.

The two moved in one fluid motion, giving Xiao Yunying no chance to react.

She hurriedly caught the jade pendant, preventing it from falling to the ground, by which time Wan Jun had finished speaking and ridden away on his horse.

Xiao Yunying took a few steps back to avoid the dust kicked up by the horses' hooves, and watched their figures.

"What? I already said I don't want it."

She looked at the white jade pendant in her hand, which was round and carved with simple openwork patterns.

"I wouldn't dare accept it even if you gave it to me. What if someone suddenly comes to me for it and I can't pay them? That would be the end of me."

The two riders had become two black dots; their short legs were no match for the horse's long legs.

"Keep it; return it to him if you come across it again."

After putting the jade pendant in the supermarket, Xiao Yunying endured the pain and limped back.

The two men on horseback gradually closed the distance between them. Wan Jun reminded the man in black to control the direction from time to time, and they stopped when they reached the city gate.

The man in black handed the reins to Wan Jun, and the tall, strong man led the two horses and paid the city entry fee.

"Master, we haven't eaten all day. Let's find a place to eat first, and then continue our journey."

"Go."

Wan Jun found a small restaurant and handed the horse over to the waiter: "Feed it some good fodder."

He led the man in black to a seat, and Wan Jun went to the counter to order a bowl of shredded chicken noodles, two bowls of vegetarian noodles, and eight steamed buns.

"I'd like three meat buns, five vegetarian buns, and also twenty flatbreads and two pounds of braised meat to take with me."

The man in black twitched his ears and waited for Wan Jun to return before saying, "Go and change the plain noodles to shredded chicken noodles."

Wan Jun scratched his head. He had gone to the counter to order food, and even though he was so far away and had deliberately lowered his voice, his master could still hear him.

“Master, we don’t have much money left, so we have to be careful with our spending. We can’t skimp on the horse’s fodder, so we can only cut back on it from my share.”

He eats a lot, and if he were to eat something with meat, it would cost him a lot more money, which he couldn't bear to spend.

"Then go and change my noodles and steamed buns to vegetarian ones."

Wan Jun didn't go to the counter. Instead, he casually sat down, poured a cup of tea that the waiter had just brought for the man in black, and placed it in front of his master.

"That won't do. The doctor said that Master needs to eat more nourishing foods so that his injuries can heal faster."

"A few bites of meat are not good food and won't nourish your body."

Wan Jun was incredibly bold in this matter, had his own opinions, and disobeyed his master's orders: "Master is wrong. My mother said that chicken soup is the best for nourishing the body. Whenever I was sick or injured, my mother would make chicken soup for me and say that drinking chicken soup would make me feel better."

When his loyal subordinate brought up his mother, the man in black was speechless.

Wan Jun chuckled. He knew his master couldn't refute what his mother said.
