Once out of the city and onto the mountain road, Xiao Yunsong got on and drove the oxcart. The speed increased, and the wind it generated was so strong that Xiao Yunying shifted her position and turned to face Duan Yingying's mother.
After much thought, she decided to help the mother and her two daughters as much as she could within her means.
"Aunt Qin, have you finished cleaning up your house? Have you put up the Spring Festival couplets?"
As they chatted casually, Duan Yingying's mother became less reserved: "It's all done. We'll put up the Spring Festival couplets tomorrow."
Xiao Yunying moved to the side, trying her best to shield Duan Yingying's mother from the wind.
"My aunt knows I'm injured and haven't fully healed yet. My arms and legs are stiff and I can't exert much force. I was thinking of asking Yingying to come over tomorrow to help me tidy up the house so I can put up the couplets, is that alright?"
Duan Yingying's mother said with guilt and shame, "What's wrong with that? You fell and got injured entirely because of us, but we can't even take you to see a doctor."
"Auntie, please don't say that. We gave you the carriage so that Xiaoxiao could get medical treatment. The fall and injury weren't because of you."
Duan Yingying and her mother came to thank her that very evening after returning from the city. Hearing that she had fallen and injured herself on her way back, they felt extremely guilty and brought the only two laying hens in their house to visit her.
Xiao Yunying guessed that because they had paid for Duan Xiaoxiao's medical treatment and medicine, they didn't have enough money left to justify asking them to take her to see a doctor, so they could only give her the best things in their house.
She didn't want the hen, but after much persuasion, she managed to get the mother and daughter to take it back, which triggered Duan Yingying's daily "check-in" skill at her house.
Based on the fact that the mother and daughter knew how to be grateful, she did not regret giving them the carriage and was happy to help them as needed.
Duan Yingying's mother said, "Yingying and I will come over tomorrow to help you pack. It'll be faster if the two of us do it."
"No need, Yingying is fine on her own. My house is new, we haven't lived here for long, it's not dirty or messy, it's easy to clean, and it's not tiring. Auntie, you stay home and put up the couplets. After you're done, you can do your embroidery. Don't waste your time at my house."
"Then I'll have Yingying go there earlier."
"No rush, I have to take care of things in the greenhouse this morning, I won't be here if you come too early."
That was just an excuse; she was afraid Duan Yingying would arrive before dawn.
When she went to the greenhouse, her family wouldn't let her work. Before, they could explain things to her and help out, but after she got injured, they just made her stand aside and give verbal instructions.
Now that her family members are all familiar with how to care for various vegetable seedlings, she no longer needs any guidance.
"I understand. I'll tell Yingying when I get home."
After the two had discussed the matter, Xiao Yunying had nothing more to say to Duan Yingying's mother.
Duan Yingying's mother must have noticed this, because she helped Xiao Yunying pull her cloak tighter and said, "It's windy, don't talk, or you'll get a stomachache from eating it."
Wow, Duan Yingying's mother is quite considerate.
Xiao Yunying nodded and hummed in agreement, then simply tucked her head inside as well, otherwise the cold wind would freeze her ears and face.
With his mind blank, Xiao Yunsong swayed back to the village. Duan Yingying's mother called out to him at the village entrance, "Just stop here, I'll walk back myself."
Their two houses are in different directions, how could she possibly sit comfortably and let someone escort her to her doorstep?
Hearing the voice, Xiao Yunying peeked out from under her cloak: "Have we arrived?"
It was quite warm inside the cloak, and it blocked the wind well; she almost fell asleep.
Duan Yingying's mother got out of the car and picked up the bag: "Thank you so much, Yunying. I'll have Yingying come to your house at dawn tomorrow."
"Okay, it's a deal."
After Xiao Yunsong and the others left, he said, "Little sister, do you want to help those three women?"
Xiao Yunying stretched to clear her head: "Oh, how did you guess that, big brother?"
"Is that even a question? Your sister-in-law said she tidied up the house for you yesterday morning. Just like you said, the new house you haven't lived in for long isn't dirty or messy. And you're a clean person, so you tidy up as you use it. Why would you need to find an outsider to tidy it up again?"
When his younger sister mentioned wanting the Duan family's daughter to help tidy up the house, he immediately understood what she meant; otherwise, he would have asked her earlier if she had forgotten that the house had already been tidied.
"My older brother has become smarter, and I want to help them."
Duan Yingying's mother is good at embroidery, but she can't do anything else. I wonder if I could introduce her to Sister Cheng Yue?
Taking on embroidery work like before is much more stable than finishing it and then selling it. Besides, Sister Cheng Yue is kind-hearted, so the price she charges for the embroidery will definitely be higher than if they sold it in a shop themselves.
However, there is one problem: she now interacts with people entirely according to her own nature. If you are good to me, I will repay you doubly, without any other intentions.
In fact, she didn't know much about normal social interactions. She didn't know if introducing Duan Yingying's mother to Sister Cheng Yue would cause inconvenience or trouble for both parties.
Xiao Yunying thought about it carefully and decided to forget about it.
Helping Duan Yingying's family was her personal idea, and she decided not to involve Sister Cheng Yue. She would think of another way later.
"What do you mean I've become smarter? Your older brother has always been smart, okay?"
"Good, good, big brother is smart. Big brother is much smarter than second brother."
Xiao Yunsong said happily, "Little sister has good eyesight. She finally realized that I'm smarter than your second brother, unlike our mother, who always said that we're both equally smart."
Xiao Yunying agreed verbally, but was secretly overjoyed.
My older brother is so easy to please.
Mother is right, her eldest and second brothers are just as bad.
But since my second brother isn't here, let's make my eldest brother happy.
Upon arriving at her doorstep, Xiao Yunying smelled the unique aroma of mutton soup and perked up: "Big brother, can you smell it?"
