Mu Lianrong helped Luo Xin put on her cotton-padded trousers and shoes, then carried her off the kang (heated brick bed): "There's hot water in the kitchen, go wash your face with your mother."
Luo Xin tugged at her wrinkled cotton coat: "Thank you, Grandma."
After Xiao Yunying and the little girl finished washing up, they saw her mother cooking for her in the kitchen, so they rolled up their sleeves and went over to help.
"Mom, do you think I'm too lazy and always sleep in?"
Mu Lianrong flipped the egg pancakes in the pan: "What's with the laziness? You've never been late when it's time to get up. You must have been exhausted recently, losing a lot of weight, and your injuries haven't healed yet. It's okay to sleep a little longer. Your parents are taking care of the work in the greenhouse, so you can sleep peacefully."
My daughter didn't want me to see because she was afraid I'd worry, and I still don't know how badly she hurt herself. Judging from her cotton-padded coat that day, she must have had a pretty bad fall.
"Mom, you are so good."
Having a mother who is overflowing with maternal love is truly wonderful.
Mu Lianrong said awkwardly, "You're my daughter. If I don't treat you well, who else should I treat well?"
Xiao Yunying leaned over and said, "Mother, are you shy?"
Mu Lianrong blocked her with her arm: "Go away, don't delay me from making pancakes, they're going to burn."
Xiao Yunying chuckled, rolled up a piece of egg pancake, and ate it, saying, "Mom's egg pancakes are so delicious."
"Why are you acting like a child, grabbing things with your bare hands? Quickly get bowls and chopsticks, ladle out the porridge from the pot, and call the children to eat."
"Okay."
Xiao Yunying finished the egg pancake in a few bites, then served herself some porridge and some of her homemade pickled vegetables, taking them to the dining table in the living room.
"Stop playing with the dog, wash your hands and eat."
Mu Lianrong left after making breakfast. As usual, Xiao Yunying was asked by the children to clean up the table after she finished eating. She went to the kitchen to make goat milk for the two puppies and heated up the pre-steamed minced meat.
After the two brothers finished washing the dishes, Luo Chen asked, "Mom, are you going to put up Spring Festival couplets today?"
Xiao Yunying placed the heated minced meat on the stove to cool, and scooped a spoonful of flour to make a paste: "Yes, you don't need to help. You can go read your books. I've asked Duan Yingying to help me."
They had already heard about this at the dinner table yesterday, and Mother wanted to help the mother and her two daughters.
"Then Mother will call us if she needs anything."
The two brothers went to the study to study. Not long after, Luo Li came in with two puppies, followed by Duan Yingying.
“Mother, this older sister was waiting outside the gate. I only saw her when I went out. She said she came to see you.”
Xiao Yunying said, "Yingying, why didn't you come in now that you're here?"
Duan Yingying said somewhat awkwardly, "I'm afraid that if I come too early, I'll delay Sister Yunying's meal."
"My family is busy with the greenhouse, so we get up early and eat early. Even if I don't get up one day, the kids at home will. You don't need to come so early in the future. Just knock on the door when you come. Don't just wait outside, okay? It's so cold."
Duan Yingying nodded and said, "I understand. Let me do whatever Sister Yunying wants to do."
"No rush, I'm making paste now. Help me put up the Spring Festival couplets in a bit."
"Should we just put up the Spring Festival couplets without tidying up the house?"
"The house is all tidied up. Help me put up the Spring Festival couplets first. I have other things to do later. There's a lot of work to do today, so you'll have to work hard."
"I'm not afraid of hard work. Sister Yunying, don't let my thin appearance fool you, I can do it all."
"Really? Don't say you're tired later."
Xiao Yunying stirred the batter in the pot, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw Duan Yingying swallow hard as she looked at the white batter in the pot.
Luo Li, oblivious to the situation, asked her, "Mother, is the pine nut and walnut meat paste ready? Ah, I see it."
Then I took the minced meat from the stove, poured it into the puppy's food bowl, and put it on the ground.
"Pine nuts, walnuts, time to eat meat."
Xiao Yunying, holding a spatula: ...I really want to give this clueless, silly kid a good whack.
"Take the food bowl outside and feed them."
"Don't worry, Mom, they eat very fast, they'll be finished in no time."
"Even if you eat it fast, take it outside to feed the dog. You are not allowed to feed the dog in the kitchen from now on."
Luo Li didn't understand: "Why? Didn't we always feed them in the kitchen before?"
Xiao Yunying put her hands on her hips: "That won't work anymore, no reason needed."
Luo Xin poked her head out from the doorway: "Third brother is disobedient and has made mother angry. I'm going to tell eldest brother and second brother."
"No, I'll take it out right now."
If his older brothers find out he's angered their mother, they'll punish him by making him write large characters.
Although he didn't know why his mother suddenly wouldn't let him feed the dog in the kitchen...
Luo Li took two food bowls with little meat left from the dog's mouth and came out of the kitchen. Xiao Yunying moved the pot of paste away, put the small pot of porridge on it, put a steamer on it, and put the egg pancakes on it to heat them up. She asked, "Yingying, have you had breakfast yet?"
Duan Yingying withdrew her gaze from the food bowl that had been following Luo Li's hand as it moved outwards: "I...ate."
Xiao Yunying scrubbed the spatula used to make paste: "You can't lie at the end of the year."
Duan Yingying blushed: "I didn't eat."
"I have some leftover red date porridge and egg pancakes from this morning. If you don't mind, I'll heat them up for you. They've been untouched by anyone."
"I……"
Xiao Yunying deliberately asked, "What's wrong? Are you disgusted?"
Duan Yingying said in a panic, "No, no, Sister Yunying, can I keep the pancakes and porridge to take back for lunch?"
"No, eat now."
Xiao Yunying ladled out the heated porridge, added some sugar, and placed the egg pancakes and pickled vegetables on the long table where the dishes were prepared. She then dragged over a tall stool.
"Eat here. If you finish your porridge, go get some more. There's still a little bit left, so don't leave any in the pot. Eat quickly so you can get back to work. I'll go get the couplets and paper-cut window decorations ready and tidy them up."
