Chen Yuancheng calmly and quickly scanned the expressions of all the children, finally fixing his gaze on Xiao Yunying, and walked towards her with a smile.
"Yun Ying, did you bring the children to buy things?"
Xiao Yunying said, "The children are on holiday today and said they wanted to buy books and Xuan paper, so I brought them to the city to have a look around. What are you doing here?"
"The timber I ordered has arrived. I had some free time today, so I came to take a look and prepare to have the Yang family start making the furniture you designed."
Xiao Yunying glanced up at the carpentry shop next door and offered a reminder:
"The Yang family is selling washboards in the city recently. I don't know which street they're on. You can have someone look for them, or I can pass on a message to you when we get back, so you won't have to send anyone there again."
"I understand. I'll have someone look for it in a bit."
At this moment, Chen Yuanxuan ran out of the carpenter's shop, holding two wooden figures in his hands: "Big brother... hey? Sister Xin'er, what are you doing here?"
Xiao Yunying watched as Chen Yuanxuan abruptly turned away from Chen Yuancheng, circled around to Luo Xin, and proudly displayed the wooden figure in his hand.
"Little sister Xin'er, look, these are the wooden figures I just had made. This is you, and this is me. I was thinking of giving them to you next time we meet, but I didn't expect that we would meet as soon as I got them. Here you go."
The forearm-length doll is very exquisite, painted with various colors, and looks quite nice.
Luo Li looked at the wooden figure in Chen Yuanxuan's hand, then at the empty hands of the servant behind him, confirming that there was nothing extra.
"What about mine?"
Chen Yuanxuan placed the little girl-shaped wooden figure in Luo Xin's arms and said nonchalantly, "How old are you to still be playing with this?"
Luo Xin sweetly thanked him, "Thank you, Brother Yuanxuan."
Chen Yuanxuan chuckled foolishly: "You're welcome, little sister Xin'er. I'll bring you more fun things in the future."
Luo Li stood there speechless for a moment, looking at the two of them, she thought they were siblings, and couldn't help but interject, asking:
"I'm the same age as you, so why can you do it but I can't?"
Chen Yuanxuan thought about it and realized that was indeed the case. He could only scratch his head and say, "I forgot about you when I was drawing. Maybe next time."
Xiao Yunying, suppressing a laugh, asked, "Young Master Chen, what about mine?"
Chen Yuanxuan responded with the same words: "Sister Yunying, how old are you? You're still playing with those wooden figures that we kids play with."
Xiao Yunying crossed her arms and said, "Who says adults can't play with wooden figures? I'm keeping a childlike heart and I like playing with this."
Chen Yuanxuan said in a guilty voice, "But I only made two, based on the shapes of me and Xin'er. How about next time? I'll definitely remember to make one for you too."
After thinking for a moment, she added, "You can't be angry with me, okay? I didn't mean to not make it for you. I didn't know you liked playing with statues."
What if she gets angry and doesn't cook me anything delicious?
Xiao Yunying teased him, deliberately saying, "Alright, I'll forgive you this time."
Chen Yuancheng watched Xiao Yunying joking with his younger brother and said, "It's almost noon, why don't we go to Huiweilou for lunch and then continue shopping?"
Xiao Yunying thought for a moment: "Besides books and paper, there's nothing else I need to buy."
After saying that, she bent down and asked the children, "Are you still hungry?"
The children ate quite a few snacks at the market, so they shouldn't be very hungry.
Luo Chen was the first to speak, saying, "I'm not hungry."
Chen Yuancheng glanced quickly at Luo Chen out of the corner of his eye, then winked at Chen Yuanxuan.
Chen Yuanxuan, understanding the unspoken message, said to Luo Li, "My elder brother said that Huiweilou built an earthen kiln according to your mother's suggestion, and they've added a new dish called roast duck. Do you want to try it? It's delicious."
Then, turning to Luo Xin, he continued, "The freshly roasted duck has crispy skin and tender meat. Sliced into pieces, it's wrapped with scallions, cucumber, and duck meat in small pancakes and smeared with a specially made sauce. It's incredibly delicious."
Xiao Yunying nodded as she listened to Chen Yuanxuan's introduction.
This kid, if he weren't a gourmet in modern times, would be a real waste of his talent.
Luo Li, who was already greedy, and Luo Xin, who was still young, couldn't help but swallow hard as they listened to Chen Yuanxuan's description.
Luo Li touched her stomach, which she had just felt full of, and suddenly felt that she could eat a little more. She looked up and said, "Mother, I don't think I'm full."
Xin'er also said, "Mom, I'm tired from walking, and my legs hurt a little. Let's go and rest."
Xiao Yunying could easily see through the two children's little scheme. Luo Xin was small, and she had walked quite a distance today, so it was understandable that her legs were sore.
Luo Li must be craving it.
"Alright, let's go try it, but we'll have to eat it later. Don't think I can't tell you're either hungry or just craving it."
Luo Li nodded quickly, as long as there was food, it didn't matter if it was early or late.
Luo Li handed the wooden figure in her hand to the servant behind her to hold it for her: "Brother, you and Sister Yunying go first, I'll go to the bookstore to buy some books."
Xiao Yunying asked, "Your family doesn't have any rare or ancient books, so why do you have to go to a bookstore to buy them?"
Perhaps because the father of the Chen siblings was engaged in teaching and educating people, he was somewhat strict with his sons in terms of their studies. He believed that Chen Yuanxuan's cultural foundation was not yet stable, so he was not in a hurry to send him to the academy.
Chen Yuanxuan is still being taught at home by his father, with Chen Yuancheng supervising and tutoring him.
Ever since he learned that Luo Li had been admitted to Yunshan Academy, he complained that his father wouldn't let him go to the academy, while lending a lot of books to the Luo brothers.
She often saw Luo Chen and Luo Yang copying and discussing these books at home, and only then did she realize how precious the books Chen Yuanxuan lent to the children were.
