Just as she was beginning to feel a sense of helplessness, unable to escape, a number of figures suddenly emerged from the woods on both sides a hundred meters ahead, brandishing weapons and running towards them.
Several people on each side lit torches, as if illuminating the children's hope of escape.
Why do I say that?
Because Xiao Yunying saw Chen Yuancheng.
"Yuan Cheng!"
Chen Yuancheng remained silent with a cold face, and Xiao Yunying immediately understood.
Okay, he's angry.
But that doesn't stop me from being happy.
She had never been so happy to see Chen Yuancheng.
With his striking appearance and the warm glow of the torches behind him, he looked just like a god descending to earth to save them.
The children running ahead didn't recognize them and were so frightened that they stopped in their tracks.
Some of them collapsed to the ground because their legs gave way.
Before they could even cry, Chen family guards arrived, each picking up a child and quickly retreating.
Xiao Yunying, who was running at the back, sensed that the children were afraid and explained loudly, "Don't be afraid, they're here to save you."
Chen Yuancheng, who was some distance away, suddenly changed his expression: "Yun Ying, be careful!"
Xiao Yunying had a bad feeling, so she let go of the little girl next to her and quickly squatted down.
As she crouched down, an arrow whizzed past her head and embedded itself in the ground in front of her.
My God, they can't get it back, so they're trying to kill me to cover it up.
They squatted down too quickly, forgetting that they were carrying Chen Yuanxuan, who was quite heavy, on their backs. The force of the fall caused them both to fall.
Xiao Yunying hurriedly got up, pulling Chen Yuanxuan along while saying to the two people beside her, "Don't worry about me, you guys go first."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than another whooshing sound shot through the air.
Xiao Yunying's eyes were fixed on the direction from which the bandits were coming, and she watched as the arrow shot straight toward the young woman on the far left.
Without thinking twice, she lunged at the girl and barely dodged the arrow.
The third arrow came flying, and this time she couldn't dodge it.
Fortunately, the arrow missed its mark and only struck her sleeve.
Fortunately, she was wearing Ling Qi's outer garment, which was quite large for her. The arrow only pierced through the loose sleeve of her upper arm, grazing her skin and flesh, without directly penetrating her flesh.
At this moment, the Chen family's guards arrived and blocked the remaining arrows for them.
Chen Yuancheng also came over and asked anxiously, "Are you alright?"
Xiao Yunying helped the girl up and shook her loose sleeves: "It's nothing, it just pierced my sleeve."
Chen Yuancheng finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Chen Yuanxuan was thrown and the pain brought him back to his senses. He got up from the ground and hugged his older brother's leg, saying, "Big brother, why did you take so long to get here?"
Chen Yuancheng looked down at him and said, "Don't cry, let's go over there first."
"I didn't cry."
Xiao Yunying wanted to hug him: "Yes, you didn't cry. As long as the tears didn't fall, it doesn't count as crying."
Chen Yuancheng held her hand: "You're injured."
Luo Yang ran back: "Where are you hurt?"
Xiao Yunying then noticed a stinging pain in her palm: "It's just a scratch, it's nothing serious. Yuanxuan has a fever and his head is injured, so don't be so harsh on him."
Chen Yuanxuan said, "I can walk by myself, I don't need anyone to carry me."
Xiao Yunying broke off the feathered arrow stuck in her sleeve, pulled it out and threw it on the ground. She walked towards a safe place ahead and asked, "Why are you here?"
"It's all because of someone who wouldn't listen to advice."
Xiao Yunying awkwardly touched her nose, unsure how to respond.
Several carriages were parked in the distance. Chen Yuancheng had the people holding torches help the children get on, and the group rode in one of them towards Donglin City.
Xiao Yunying finally relaxed completely once she was seated in the carriage, feeling a sense of security, and began to breathe heavily.
The intense running had left her lungs aching, and with each breath, a metallic taste rose in her throat.
After a long while, I felt a little better, and noticing the slightly awkward atmosphere, I asked:
"I see you only brought a dozen or so guards, while those bandits number thirty or forty. Do you think you can handle it?"
"I brought ordinary guards; they're more than enough to deal with them."
After answering, Chen Yuancheng said with a hint of sarcasm, "I thought you were so brave to venture into the bandits' lair all by yourself, how did you get discovered?"
Judging from his tone, Xiao Yunying scratched her forehead in distress.
Oh no, she's really angry this time. I don't know how to make her happy.
Why aren't you speaking?
Xiao Yunying gave a fawning smile: "I'm just reflecting on my actions."
Luo Yang gleaned some clues from their conversation: "Mother, did you sneak over here on your own?"
Chen Yuancheng answered for her: "Your mother is very capable. I already said we should wait for the bandit-suppressing army to arrive before making further plans, but your mother insisted on going to rescue you all by herself."
But I didn't expect her to actually rescue you. It seems she could have led you away from the bandits even without me."
Luo Yang's expression darkened slightly, clearly indicating his disapproval of Xiao Yunying taking the risk alone.
Even if it's to save oneself.
Xiao Yunying felt quite uncomfortable being confronted by Chen Yuancheng like this: "I already said that I had a bad feeling. If I didn't come to rescue people tonight, something irreparable would happen, which is why I took the risk."
"Then tell me, what happened?"
Xiao Yunying held back, glanced at Luo Yang's sullen face, then turned her gaze to Chen Yuanxuan and said:
“Your brother has a high fever. If I don’t come tonight and it takes any more time, what if he gets brain damage from the fever?”
Chen Yuancheng glanced at Luo Yang, whose face looked particularly pale, and guessed that things were not as simple as Xiao Yunying had said.
