Luo Sheng sensed the emotion in Xiao Yunying's gaze and asked in confusion, "What's wrong?"
Xiao Yunying looked away: "It's nothing."
She continued washing the clothes, not daring to voice her thoughts.
At least we're not struggling to get enough to eat like before. This man doesn't have any other expenses besides food, so we can just keep supporting him.
Around noon, the family's bed sheets, blankets, and changes of clothes were finally washed.
Xiao Yunying felt helpless. Now that there were more people in her family, someone was watching her no matter what she did. Otherwise, she could just use the washing machine at the supermarket to wash the sheets and blankets instead of washing them herself.
Xiao Yunying was wringing out the last piece of clothing when she and Zheng Yunwan discussed what to have for lunch.
"I'm too lazy to cook. Let's keep it simple for lunch. I'll make some braised noodles with cabbage and diced meat."
Zheng Yunwan said, "Then I'll go prepare the dishes first."
"Okay, you go ahead, I'll take care of things here."
Zheng Yunwan glanced at Luo Sheng, who was pouring water, then quickly looked away and went into the kitchen.
After wringing out the clothes in her hands, Xiao Yunying got up and stretched her back.
With more people around, there was more housework, which exhausted her.
"Give it to me."
Luo Sheng put down the large wooden basin and took the clothes from her hands.
Xiao Yunying let him take it, and after thinking for a while, she asked, "Is there something you want to tell me?"
Luo Sheng hung the clothes up to dry, then turned around and said, "There is something."
Xiao Yunying shook her hand, a gesture that made Luo Sheng narrow his eyes slightly.
Unlike the local women, she didn't follow many rules. When washing clothes, she rolled up her sleeves, revealing her fair forearms.
Luo Sheng did not mention this matter.
His intuition told him that Xiao Yunying wouldn't listen even if he told her.
Xiao Yunying placed the large wooden basin used for washing bed sheets in the corner to dry: "You can just say what you need to say."
Whether she listens or not is another matter.
Just as Luo Sheng was about to speak, there was a knock at the door.
Xiao Yunying said "wait a moment" and went to open the door first.
Mu Lianrong brought in a small bowl of steamed buns: "Yunyun, Mom made some steamed buns with chives and pork. I brought some for you. Have you cooked yet? If not, these steamed buns are fine."
Xiao Yunying replied that she hadn't started yet, then turned and called out towards the kitchen, "Yunwan, you don't need to chop the vegetables anymore, Mother brought some steamed buns."
Zheng Yunwan responded and came out to take the steamed buns.
Mu Lianrong glanced at the sheets and blankets drying in the yard, automatically ignoring Luo Sheng's presence: "You're washing the blankets? Can you two girls wring out the water? Should I call your older brother?"
Xiao Yunying lowered her rolled-up sleeves: "It's already washed, so there's no need for you to make another trip, brother."
Mu Lianrong already disliked Luo Sheng, so she deliberately said loudly, "This kind of physical work shouldn't be done by girls like you. There's no capable man in the family. If there's work to be done in the future, come back and ask your father and brothers for help. Don't let my daughter get tired."
Xiao Yunying kept tugging at her mother's sleeve, signaling her to stop talking, but Mu Lianrong thought she was only stopping her from speaking out of consideration for Luo Sheng.
She didn't care about other people's feelings; no one's feelings were more important than her own daughter's. She said everything she wanted to say in one breath.
Xiao Yunying secretly glanced at Luo Sheng's face, then whispered in her mother's ear, "Mother, it was Luo Sheng who helped me wring out the water."
"Yeah?"
Mu Lianrong was surprised for a moment, then said, "That's what he should do."
Luo Sheng said calmly, "That's right. As the man of the house, it's my duty to do physical labor."
Now it was Xiao Yunying's turn to be shocked. Luo Sheng didn't get angry at her mother's sarcastic remarks, and even agreed with her.
Seeing that Luo Sheng's attitude was good, Mu Lianrong did not continue lecturing him.
After telling Xiao Yunying that the chicken farm was almost finished, Xiao Shanhai added money and hired people to expedite the construction, which would be completed in two days.
"We built two sheds as you suggested, so that the chicks can be raised separately to avoid any disease or other accidents affecting all the chicks."
Xiao Yunying said, "Then I'll go and tell Yuancheng to bring the black-boned chicken chicks over in a few days."
"That's all. You all go eat. Mother is going home now."
After seeing Mu Lianrong off, Xiao Yunying went to the kitchen and mixed two plates of cold dishes, which she ate with steamed buns for lunch.
She was still thinking about the chicks while eating, clearly distracted.
With so many chickens raised together, disease prevention is something we have to be extra careful about.
You could have her dad sprinkle some lime and pesticide powder in the chicken coop first. As for the specifics... maybe you could ask Chen Yuancheng if there's anyone skilled at raising chickens who can teach them.
The supermarket's book section should have books on raising chickens, I'll browse through them when I get back.
She planned to completely hand over the chicken-raising work to her family.
It's hard to say about the whole north, but at least in and around Donglin City, no one raises black-boned chickens, making this business unique.
Xiao Yunying was deep in thought and didn't notice Luo Sheng eating silently on the other side, glancing at her from time to time.
He completely forgot that he had just said he had something to tell him.
After finishing her meal, Xiao Yunying went to find a carriage to go into the city.
She reminded Zheng Yunwan that if she came back late, she should take the children to eat first and not wait for her.
Now there are two carriages in the house. She uses one herself, and the children are not afraid of not having a carriage to pick them up.
Once in the city, she first went to a restaurant to try her luck, only to learn that Chen Yuancheng hadn't come that day. She then went to the back gate of Chen's residence to inquire.
The old woman guarding the back gate of the Chen residence recognized Xiao Yunying and went in to report without saying much.
After waiting for a while, Ling Qi came to pick her up and told her that Chen Yuancheng's father was still at the mansion and was talking to Chen Yuancheng.
