In the unfamiliar environment, with so many people watching her, Xiao Yunying, no matter how tired and sleepy she was, only slept for a little over an hour before waking up.
She irritably tugged at her messy hair. What was wrong with these people? Why were they staring at her like that? Even with her back to them, she could feel their gazes on her.
She sat there waiting until evening when the jailer who had brought her in came over with two buckets.
Xiao Yunying looked at them curiously; it turned out they were distributing food to the prisoners.
All the prisoners stretched out their arms, holding their bowls, as if they would miss out on food if they were a little late.
She walked to the fence before she could see the food in the wooden bucket.
One bucket contained dark-colored steamed buns, and the other contained boiled radishes.
Xiao Yunying pursed her lips, wondering how she could possibly eat this.
Indeed, she was right to cherish food. She thanked God for every delicious meal she had, and she would cherish it even more in the future.
She glanced at the sky outside through the small window, wondering why Cheng Yue hadn't arrived yet, when she heard the sound of chains unlocking the cell door.
"Yun Ying, were you waiting anxiously? I'm late, come and eat quickly."
Xiao Yunying walked over and looked Cheng Yue up and down to make sure she was unharmed before asking, "Did something happen?"
Cheng Yue handed her a bowl and chopsticks: "It's nothing. I just met a steward from a wealthy family on the way here. He insisted on having me order clothes for a maid. We talked for a while, so the food might be a little cold."
Xiao Yunying touched the bowl of rice, which was still warm: "It's not cold, the temperature is just right for eating."
Cheng Yue put down the bundle on her back: "Here are some snacks and treats, as well as the storybook you wanted. If you're thirsty, drink the water in this bamboo tube. If you want anything else, just tell me."
"That's enough, thank you, Sister Cheng Yue."
The jailer, who had been leaning against the door, let out a sneer and then looked at Xiao Yunying with a provocative gaze.
Xiao Yunying frowned as she looked at him, wondering if this person was sick.
She could sense that the jailer was indeed hostile towards her, but she couldn't figure out why.
Since the other party didn't directly cause her trouble, Xiao Yunying could only pretend not to see him and ignore him.
Cheng Yue also heard the sneer. She glanced warily at the jailer, picked up her lunchbox, and said, "Yun Ying, it's getting late. You should eat and rest early. I'll head back now."
"good."
After the jailer locked the door, he gave her another disdainful laugh.
Xiao Yunying gave the other person the middle finger as they walked away, then focused on eating her food.
Cheng Yue knew her appetite; she only ate until she was 80% full. She also knew that Cheng Yue didn't like to waste food. Cheng Yue probably thought that Cheng Yue was afraid that Cheng Yue would go hungry, so she brought a little more food than Cheng Yue usually ate, so that Cheng Yue wouldn't feel full even if she ate it all.
Old Mrs. Liu, who had been watching Xiao Yunying eat while clinging to the wooden fence, couldn't hold back any longer: "Xiao Yunying, give me some to eat."
Xiao Yunying ignored her and continued eating.
"You little bitch, I'm talking to you, are you deaf? Give me something to eat."
Xiao Yunying looked up: "Is this how you ask for help?"
Old Mrs. Liu swallowed hard and softened her voice: "I haven't had a proper meal in a long time, please give me some."
Xiao Yunying responded with an "Oh," and then asked, "What does this have to do with me?"
After saying that, he picked up a shrimp ball and put it in his mouth: "As expected of the chef at Huiweilou, the food he makes is delicious."
Old Mrs. Liu realized she was being played and pounded on the door, yelling, "You little slut..."
"Shut up, what's all the noise about?"
The unfriendly jailer walked over and immediately berated Xiao Yunying: "Eat your food properly and don't cause trouble, or I'll shut you up."
Xiao Yunying found it absurd, not even having time to swallow what was in her mouth: "It wasn't me who was shouting and yelling."
"Shut up, all of you behave yourselves!"
The jailer ignored her completely, said what he wanted to say, and left.
Xiao Yunying chewed her food fiercely, complaining indistinctly, "What the hell? No matter whose fault it is, they just want to scold me."
She deliberately ate her food in an exaggerated manner in front of Old Lady Liu, then leaned back on the bed and started reading a storybook.
She hadn't read more than a few pages when it got dark. They didn't light candles for prisoners here, so she could only put down the book, lie down, and stare blankly.
Fortunately, it wasn't pitch black; braziers were placed on either side of the cell, and starlight and moonlight streamed in through the windows, which eased her anxiety.
Early the next morning, Xiao Yunying stopped the prison guards who came to inspect the prison.
She only dared to shout after she saw that it was the same jailer who brought her in. If it had been the one from yesterday afternoon... she would have shouted even if it didn't work out.
Because she needed to use the restroom.
She already knew that the wooden tub in the corner was where he relieved himself.
With so many people watching, both men and women, Xiao Yunying simply didn't have the courage to relieve herself in front of so many people.
Xiao Yunying stopped the jailer and whispered her request, then took out a five-tael silver ingot from her pocket and handed it over.
Anyway, she wasn't searched when she arrived, so it's not unreasonable for her to have silver ingots in her bosom.
"Brother officer, I promise I'll be back soon. I won't run away."
The jailer hesitated for a moment, but ultimately could not resist the temptation of the silver. He quickly took the silver ingot, put it in his pocket, and unlocked the lock.
"You'd better hurry and get back before our leaders arrive."
Xiao Yunying followed him quickly, asking, "Who's your boss?"
"You should have seen him yesterday afternoon."
Xiao Yunying recalled that person who always had a long face or made strange noises whenever they saw her.
