Xiao Yunying asked softly, trying to get the information out of her, "Xin'er, has anything happened lately? Tell your mother, I've been quite busy and haven't had time to take care of things at home."
Luo Xin thought for a moment, then raised her head and said, "No, when Mother is at home, I am at home; when Mother goes to the city, I go to the city. I don't know anything Mother doesn't know either. You'll have to ask Granny Chang."
"Xin'er, think about it again. You can talk about anything interesting, happy, or unhappy. When you played with the other kids in the village, did you do anything fun?"
Let's make sure Xin'er isn't bullied again when she's playing with the other children in the village. There are some things that young children don't understand, so the adults have to be very careful.
Luo Xin quickly understood what her mother meant: "Is Mom worried that I'll be bullied? My uncle's son is always with me when we go out to play, so Mom doesn't need to worry."
Xiao Yunying was surprised that Luo Xin immediately guessed her thoughts.
However, the little girl is right. Her older brother's youngest son is still young and hasn't gone to school yet. He usually stays at home and accompanies Xin'er when she goes out to play. He is a good older brother, which makes her feel much more at ease.
Xiao Yunying put her arm around Luo Xin: "Then can I ask you why you seemed unhappy recently?"
Luo Xin leaned against her chest: "It's just that learning characters is too difficult. I can never remember them, and my handwriting is ugly. I feel anxious and unhappy."
Xiao Yunying couldn't think of any other reason why Luo Xin would be unhappy. She felt that what the child said was true and that she wasn't just making up an excuse to fool her.
She comforted the little one in her arms: "Learning to read can't be rushed. You're still young, you can learn slowly later, there's no need to rush."
Besides, our Xin'er is already very capable. Many people go through life without even knowing how to write their own name. Let's take it slow and not put too much pressure on ourselves, or we might stunt our growth.
Luo Xin frowned and said, "No, I can't not grow tall. I want to grow tall and strong to protect Mom."
Speaking of this, Xiao Yunying remembered something else: "Did your father mention that you and Wei Xun were going to learn martial arts?"
Luo Xin frowned slightly, then relaxed: "I told you, Dad said that Master Wei Xun just returned and he needs to rest for a day before he can start learning martial arts again the day after tomorrow."
Xiao Yunying exclaimed in surprise, "So fast!"
But then he thought about it again and said to Luo Xin, "Martial arts training is very tiring. If you can't take it, you must tell Wei Xun. Don't overwork yourself, and be careful not to get injured."
“Xin’er knows. Mother, do you want to practice with Xin’er? Father said that exercising is good for your health.”
Xiao Yunying was startled by the suggestion and hurriedly shook her head: "I'd rather not. My body is too stiff now, and I can barely bend over. Besides, I don't have your perseverance and can't endure the hardships of martial arts training."
Luo Xin said earnestly, "It's alright, Mother, you can rest. Xin'er isn't afraid of hardship. Once Xin'er learns martial arts, I'll protect Mother and beat out those who bully her."
Every time Luo Xin discussed martial arts, she would say she would protect her. Xiao Yunying kissed the little girl's chubby cheek and said, "Good girl, I know your feelings. I haven't spoiled you for nothing."
Luo Xin nestled in Xiao Yunying's arms without saying a word. She remembered the conversation she overheard between the two outside her mother's room on that rainy day, and her little mouth twitched.
Realizing she was still in her mother's arms, she blinked quickly, holding back her tears.
Xiao Yunying gently rested her chin on Luo Xin's head, thinking about what dishes to make later, and didn't notice the little girl's emotional change.
The mother and daughter sat in the kitchen for a while, then Xiao Yunying put Luo Xin down and told her to go play with her older brothers while she started making dinner.
——————
The next day, Luo Sheng went to the academy with his three children.
Xiao Yunying thought she could have a good argument with him, but Luo Sheng returned in less than two hours.
"You're back so quickly, has the matter been resolved?"
"It's solved."
Xiao Yunying continued peeling walnuts: "Then go and rest."
Luo Sheng sat down next to him, picked up two walnuts, and crushed the shells with his hands: "Aren't you going to ask me how I solved it?"
Xiao Yunying glanced at the walnut in his hand with disdain, picked up the tongs, cracked a walnut, and carefully picked out the kernel.
"It's fine as long as it's resolved. The process doesn't matter. I trust your ability to handle things and I'm sure you'll handle things well."
Luo Sheng picked out the walnut kernels and put them in a bowl, then took two more walnuts and crushed them: "Are you trying to ease the tension between me and the children?"
Xiao Yunying directly admitted: "Don't you feel that you're not that close to the children? Getting more involved in their growth will make your relationship better."
Luo Sheng said, "From the moment they were born until today, I have spent less time with them than you have with them."
Xiao Yunying said, "I know, so you should participate more in their lives whenever you can spend time with them, so that they can truly recognize you as their father, acknowledge you from the bottom of their hearts, accept you, and rely on you."
Instead of simply changing a name on the family tree and then ignoring the issue.
Luo Sheng suddenly laughed: "But have you ever thought that our relationship isn't as bad as you think?"
"Not bad, but not close either."
“We are all men, so it’s not surprising that our emotions aren’t as outwardly expressed as yours, women.”
Xiao Yunying paused for a moment, thinking that it made sense.
Luo Chen and Luo Yang weren't always overtly affectionate towards her; she was usually the one who took the initiative to care for them. Yet, she never felt that the two children were distant from her.
