Chapter 468 Taking Money but Doing Nothing

After the group had completely disappeared from sight, Xiao Yunying sat on the bed, sulking.

She would rather do good deeds with the money, even giving it to beggars, than give away something like this.

"Once I get out, I'll make you throw it all up sooner or later."

Old Mrs. Liu laughed loudly from the side, saying, "Serves you right, you little slut. What's the use of earning so much silver if you can't even spend it all?"

Xiao Yunying was already annoyed, so she retorted directly: "Shut up, don't bother me, or I'll spend money to cut your tongue out first."

Old Mrs. Liu's voice immediately lowered considerably: "You, you dare!"

"You'll see if I dare!"

Seeing that she was huddled in the corner and not saying anything, Xiao Yunying sat back on the bed and continued reading her storybook.

At noon, when the jailers were serving food to the prisoners, the jailer who had been relatively kind to her also gave her a bowl.

Xiao Yunying didn't take it: "No need to give it to me, someone will bring me food."

The jailer didn't say it explicitly: "You should take it first."

Xiao Yunying immediately understood: "Did your boss make things difficult for the person who brings me food again? He took so much money from my family, and he won't even let him bring in a meal?"

The jailer put down the wooden bucket: "Keep your voice down, or our boss will hear you, or you'll be the one suffering."

Another prison guard, who was distributing the food, urged, "What's there to say? Hurry up and finish distributing the food so we can go eat."

Xiao Yunying took out another five-tael silver ingot from her bosom and stuffed it into the jailer's hand: "Please go ahead and do your work, brother. May I have a few words with this jailer?"

The jailer stuffed the silver ingot into his pocket and reminded him, "You know what you should and shouldn't say. Hurry up, or the boss will see."

After saying that, he picked up the two wooden buckets and left.

Xiao Yunying thanked him, and only after he walked away did she take out another fifty-tael silver note folded into a small square from her bosom and slip it into the jailer's hand while pretending to pick up a bowl.

The jailer was stunned for a moment before realizing what had happened, and quickly clutched what he was holding and hid it in his sleeve.

Xiao Yunying asked in a low voice, "Officer, you're a good person. Can you tell me why your boss dislikes me so much? Is it just for the money?"

The jailer hesitated for a moment before saying, "Miss, do you remember Ma Lao Er, who was arrested because of you before?"

Xiao Yunying certainly remembered the name; Liu Ge was the one who had bullied Zheng Yunwan.

"I know, but what does it have to do with him?"

“That Ma Lao Er is his wife’s younger brother.”

With just that one sentence, Xiao Yunying immediately understood.

"I understand, thank you very much, officer."

She thought for a moment, and still asked with a glimmer of hope, "Does that mean I won't be able to eat the food delivered to me from outside anymore?"

The jailer looked around to make sure no one was watching, then lowered his voice and said, "He took money from your family and accepted the food box, but he ate it all himself. Don't expect any outsiders to bring you food."

Xiao Yunying immediately lost her spirits like a wilted eggplant, and she really couldn't eat the food here.

She could sneakily eat things from the supermarket, but Old Mrs. Liu would keep an eye on her all the time, and it would be hard to explain after a while.

Perhaps it was because her appearance was too pitiful to bear, or perhaps the silver notes had an effect, but the jailer said, "The food here is indeed hard to swallow. If you really can't stand it, you can wait until our boss isn't around, and I'll secretly buy you some steamed buns or sesame cakes or something to eat."

Xiao Yunying's hope was rekindled: "That's fine too. Thank you so much, officer. You're such a kind person. I'll definitely repay you handsomely when I get out."

She was beautiful and had a sweet voice, which made the jailer blush. He waved his hand awkwardly and said, "It's nothing. It just means we have to deliver it outside of mealtimes and when our boss isn't around."

"As long as there's food, it's fine to be late. Thank you for your hard work, prison guard."

“My surname is Liu, and my name is Liu Dalei. You can just call me by my name from now on. I heard that you are a general’s wife and a county princess. I am not worthy of being called your elder brother.”

Xiao Yunying was never one to put on airs: "Judging from your appearance, you must be a few years older than me, so it's only right that you call me 'Big Brother'."

Liu Dalei wasn't good at this kind of conversation: "You rest first, I'm leaving now."

"Okay, Brother Liu, take care."

Having solved the problem of food, Xiao Yunying was in a relatively good mood and sat back on the bed.

Although it only has steamed buns and flatbreads, it's much better than the food here.

In the afternoon, Liu Dalei finally brought her two oil paper packages.

"Eat quickly, don't let our boss see."

"I understand, thank you, Brother Liu."

The food he gave us consisted of four steamed buns in one bag and osmanthus cake in another.

Xiao Yunying thought this person was really good. Although it was because of the money involved, she guessed that he had also taken a risk.

The head of the prison guards must have warned the other guards not to interfere with him, otherwise Liu Dalei wouldn't be so nervous.

Xiao Yunying ate one steamed bun to tide her over, as it was inconvenient to use the restroom here, so she didn't dare to eat too much.

He casually shared the leftovers with the female prisoners in his cell with Granny Liu, and then went back to reading his storybook, completely satisfied.

She and Liu Dalei spoke in hushed tones. Old Mrs. Liu only saw that the food was given to her by the jailer and did not know the reason behind it, so she did not dare to cause trouble and could only stare fiercely at Xiao Yunying.

As evening approached, Xiao Yunying asked Liu Dalei to take her to the outhouse.

The two had already walked very fast, but their luck ran out. Just as they stepped into the prison, they saw the head jailer carrying a food box from Huiweilou.
