A few days after the couple held their belated ceremony, they began a long-distance relationship.
Upon receiving the order, Luo Yong didn't even wait for Xiao Yunying to return from the city before riding away from Donglin City to the capital. He only asked Madam Luo to deliver a few words of comfort to her, telling her not to worry.
Recalling that Luo Sheng had asked her a couple of days ago if there was any medicine that could prolong a person's life, and the worry on his face after she denied it, Xiao Yunying guessed that the emperor probably couldn't hold on any longer.
She couldn't be of much help in this matter, so staying home quietly and not causing him any trouble was the best option for her.
But she wouldn't stop worrying just because Luo Sheng left her with the words "Don't worry".
Replacing someone in that position always involves bloodshed and turmoil. As a military general, Luo Sheng couldn't possibly escape without facing any danger.
Having no other connections, she could only ask Chen Yuancheng for help in finding out news from the capital.
When they learned that Master Chen had also gone to the capital, they became even more certain that they had guessed correctly.
Fortunately, Luo Sheng would send her a poorly littering eagle every now and then to deliver a message. The eagle would just drop the bamboo tube and leave, not giving her a chance to reply.
She dared not reply in any other way, fearing that her actions might delay Luo Sheng's affairs.
In each letter Luo Sheng sent, she mostly reported that she was safe and sound, without saying much else. However, under her persistent questioning, Chen Yuancheng told her everything about the situation in the capital without hiding anything.
Knowing his health was failing, the emperor had recalled all the civil officials who were no longer in important positions and was preparing to support his younger brother to ascend the throne.
A month later, the emperor passed away.
With so many brothers, there were naturally some who were unwilling to accept the mandate of heaven and wanted to change it. The capital was in chaos for a while, but fortunately, it didn't last long and stabilized after more than half a month.
Luo Sheng's mercenaries helped the new emperor ascend the throne, and the civil officials, led by Chen's father, all obeyed the will of Heaven and supported the new emperor. The matter was settled in this way, and there were no further surprises.
However, the new emperor's foundation was unstable, and frankly speaking, he was not as experienced as his brother in handling state affairs. Luo Sheng could not return for the time being and stayed in the capital to support him.
As time went by, her belly grew bigger and bigger.
At the end of November, she gave birth to a daughter safely.
After confirming that the child's limbs were intact, the cry was strong, and there were no birthmarks on the body, she finally fell asleep with peace of mind.
When he woke up, the first thing he saw was Luo Sheng, who had a stubble beard and looked exhausted.
"Luo Sheng? You're back?"
Luo Sheng looked at her pale face, pale from blood loss, with a pained expression: "I'm back, Yun Ying, you've suffered."
Xiao Yunying frowned and complained, "I knew childbirth was painful, but I didn't expect it to be this painful. Good heavens, I don't even dare to think I can endure it."
The main problem is that we can't just give up; we can't just put it back in the bag.
As she spoke, she reached out and pinched Luo Sheng's cheek slightly.
Luo Sheng was taken aback for a moment: "Yun Ying, are you angry that I shouldn't have gotten you pregnant? If you want to vent your anger, hit me a few more times."
Xiao Yunying confirmed that she was pinching real flesh and withdrew her hand, saying, "What are you thinking? I just wanted to pinch you to see if you were a real person. I thought I was dreaming and hadn't woken up yet."
Luo Sheng held her hand: "It's my fault. I thought I could get back to be with you before you gave birth, but I was still too late."
Xiao Yunying asked in confusion, "How did you know I was going to give birth?"
“My mother kept counting down the days and wrote to me in advance, asking if I could come back to be with you during childbirth. She said that childbirth is very dangerous for a woman and she needs me, her husband, to be there to put her mind at ease, otherwise she would be very sad. So I rushed back as soon as I finished everything.”
Xiao Yunying felt like crying again.
Mrs. Luo treated her with the same tenderness and care as her own daughter.
She made up her mind; out of consideration for her mother-in-law, she wouldn't get too angry if she ever argued with Luo Sheng in the future.
Xiao Yunying looked at his unshaven appearance and asked, "Have you seen the child?"
“I saw her. My mother said she was a fair-skinned and lovely child, but she looks all red and wrinkled. I can’t see how she’s fair-skinned and lovely.”
Xiao Yunying smiled and said, "Newborn babies are all like this. They'll grow out of it."
Luo Sheng suddenly stood up and poured a glass of warm water: "Look how dry your lips are from talking to you. Here, have some water."
Xiao Yunying's lower body was still a little sore. She slowly got up, drank a few sips of water, and then lay down again.
Thinking of the capital, she asked, "How many days can you stay at home?"
Luo Sheng put down his teacup: "Things over there are all settled, I don't need to go back."
Xiao Yunying keenly noticed a momentary unease in his expression: "Then what reward do you have? And the two treasures you presented before that filled the national treasury, that alone is quite a contribution, isn't it?"
He was in a hurry to return and marry her, so he couldn't go back to the capital to report back together.
She had asked him several times, and he only said that he knew what he was doing and that the emperor would not blame him, so she didn't need to worry.
Luo Sheng returned and sat down: "I've rewarded you. My grandfather's title of Duke has been passed down to me, though it's been reduced by one rank."
"Anything else?"
"there is none left."
"What about the punishment?"
Seeing that she had guessed it, Luo Sheng lowered his head and smiled, "I really can't hide it from you."
Xiao Yunying rolled her eyes at him: "Nonsense, no matter how much Feng Yi rebelled, he was still the emperor's brother and a member of the royal family. You killed him, how could he really not be punished at all?"
Luo Sheng no longer concealed anything: "The new emperor dismissed me from my position as general and stripped me of my military power, so now I only have a title without any real power to maintain appearances."
