Side Story - Luo Xin

Not long after Luo Xin's coming-of-age ceremony, Luo Sheng and Xiao Yunying called her to their room one morning.

She thought her parents had agreed to let her travel, so she happily went into the house. Seeing her parents sitting in front of her, she asked, "Father, what did you want to see me about?"

Luo Sheng coughed lightly, signaling for his wife to speak.

Xiao Yunying acted as if she hadn't heard, lowering her head and fiddling with her fingers.

Luo Xin looked at her parents, puzzled. "Mom, what's wrong? Is there something you want to tell me?"

Xiao Yunying replied in a low voice, "Your father has something to say to you."

They successfully threw the matter back onto Luo Sheng.

Helpless, Luo Song had no choice but to speak up himself.

“Xin’er, you’ve passed your coming-of-age ceremony and reached the age where you can distinguish right from wrong. There are some things you should know now.”

Luo Xin looked at her father in confusion: "What's wrong?"

She wouldn't be going to discuss her marriage with Chen Yuanxuan with me directly, would she...?

Didn't we agree to get married after I turned eighteen? Did the Chen family change their minds and come to urge me to get married?

Luo Sheng's face was tense, and he said expressionlessly, "That rainy night... you heard it all, didn't you?"

Xiao Yunying looked up at Luo Sheng, wondering when the rainy night he mentioned was.

Luo Xin also didn't understand what that sentence meant: "What rainy night? What did I hear?"

Luo Sheng's heart was not as calm as it appeared. A complex emotion flashed in his eyes as he spoke again: "Many years ago, on that rainy night, I told your mother about your background. Did you hear it all?"

Xiao Yunying and Luo Xin's expressions changed simultaneously.

They all remembered what happened on that rainy day.

Xiao Yunying looked at Luo Xin in shock and panic: "Xin'er, you already knew?"

Luo Xin's expression froze on her face. After a long silence, she finally spoke, "Yes... I already knew."

She knew from a very young age that she wasn't her mother's child.

However, her two older brothers had explained to her that they were not her mother's biological children either. She didn't quite understand, but the thought of being like her three older brothers made her happy.

What she didn't expect was that she wasn't even her father's child, but a complete stranger with no connection to the Luo family.

It was raining so hard that day that Aunt Yunwan went to the kitchen to boil water. She was a little scared being alone in the house, so she wanted to come and keep her mother company.

I never expected to overhear what my father was saying.

She was sad for a long time... but she didn't know whether she was sad because her mother died tragically because of her father's involvement, or because she was adopted.

But she dared not ask, nor dared she tell anyone.

She's a bad child... She's attached to the warmth this family gives her, and she's afraid that if she tells them, her mother and brother will abandon her.

She couldn't bear to leave her mother and brothers...

So she chose to pretend she didn't know anything about it...

She never imagined that her parents would reveal the secret she had kept hidden for so long.

Xiao Yunying reacted much more strongly than Luo Xin. She thought of Luo Sheng's superior hearing and said angrily, "You heard Xin'er outside the door that day? Why did you keep saying those things? How young was she then? What if she couldn't bear hearing all that!"

Luo Yong explained in a low voice, "Don't get angry. The rain was so heavy that day, and I was distracted because of you. I didn't notice the surroundings. After I finished talking and calmed down, I heard close and hurried footsteps leaving from outside the door."

Xiao Yunying recalled that Luo Xin had indeed been acting strangely for a while. She asked her several times, but Luo Xin only said some childish thoughts that children would have. She couldn't think of any other worries that such a young child could have, so she didn't press the matter.

"Then why didn't you tell me sooner!"

"I wanted to see how the child would react before discussing it with you, otherwise you would worry if I told you in advance."

To Luo Sheng's surprise, the child chose to keep it a secret and didn't tell him, so he didn't take the initiative to expose the matter.

Luo Xin nervously gripped her hands: "Father, you're telling me this now... does it mean you don't want me anymore?"

Looking at Luo Xin's cautious expression, Xiao Yunying suddenly remembered that when she first came into this world, this little girl also looked at her timidly.

She had worked so hard to raise Luo Xin to be this cheerful, outgoing, and lively person... She hadn't seen this expression on Luo Xin's face in so many years...

Xiao Yunying stood up with a pained expression, walked to Luo Xin's side, and held her hand: "What are you saying? How could your parents abandon you?"

But this concerns your background, and your father and I feel we shouldn't hide it from you. Now that you're capable of distinguishing right from wrong, your father and I have discussed it and are letting you decide for yourself what to do.

Luo Sheng took out two envelopes: "After the Luo family was exonerated, I sent people to investigate your birth mother's family background."

Her maternal family name is Xie, and she is from Yancheng. Her maternal grandparents' family was in the spice business, and they were quite well-off.

The man your mother married came from a poor family but had a handsome appearance. He tricked your mother into marrying him with sweet words and then took her to the south. He started a spice business with your mother's dowry and spice recipes.

Your birth mother had a good head for business. She worked hard with that man for several years before finally settling down in the south and accumulating some wealth. Only after the business stabilized did your birth mother feel comfortable getting pregnant with you.

The man, thinking he had achieved success, became arrogant and not only took two concubines but also kept a mistress outside the marriage, and even had a son with her.

After your birth mother discovered the child of his mistress, the man stopped pretending... In short, your birth mother eventually gave up completely and asked for a divorce. However, the man used the child in her womb as a threat, demanding that she leave behind all her dowry.
