Zhang Xudong asked his grandmother to take the three girls to the east room to rest, and the five boys slept on the floor in the west room.
It's easy to live in the summer. As long as the kids are full, they can fall asleep sitting on the wall, let alone sleeping on the floor.
Zhang Xudong sat in meditation at the door of the main hall, guarding the person he cared about most in this world.
When the sounds of deep sleeping breaths came from the two inner rooms, Zhang Xudong slipped into the space.
"Xudong, how is it here? Is it safe?" He Jingxian, who was lying on the bed, asked Zhang Xudong hurriedly when she saw him.
"I should be fine here. The courtyard wall and the house are made of bricks, so they should be strong enough. How is your dad?" Zhang Xudong replied.
"My dad discussed it with a few uncles and decided to split the team into three groups to take turns on duty tonight. The sentries are all doubled up.
They said they were lucky they didn't go to the mountain to join in the fun today, otherwise if something really happened tonight, the punishment they received would be light." He Jingxian said thankfully.
"Jing, you must protect yourself. If there is any danger, you must hide in the space as soon as possible." Zhang Xudong said worriedly.
"Xudong, don't worry. There's no safer place in the entire county than here. You don't have to worry about me. Just take good care of grandma and my little sister.
If I wasn't injured, I would have gone to your place and helped you protect grandma and little sister." He Jingxian comforted Zhang Xudong.
"Just rest and recover, everything is fine here. I'm leaving now, take care." Zhang Xudong kissed He Jingxian lightly on the face and left the space.
Zhang Xudong stayed in the living room, feeling the lateness of the hour. He shone his flashlight on the clock: it was already three in the morning. Dawn would be just over an hour away. It seemed he had been worrying too much.
Zhang Xudong didn't know that as soon as it got dark last night, groups of monkeys, wolves and wild boars came down from the mountains and rushed towards the places where humans lived.
This time, the three animal groups rarely fought each other as soon as they met. Instead, they mixed together and split into two parts, each attacking a different village.
They started from the village at the foot of the mountain, and after a surprise attack and destruction, they rushed to the next village, and then harassed all the way towards the county town.
The phones at the county government and the public security bureau kept ringing after ten o'clock last night, with calls from the communes below reporting animal disasters and asking for help.
The leaders of the county government and the bureau immediately took it seriously, informed the troops of the situation and requested support.
Zhang Xudong thought he was worrying too much. Just as he relaxed a little, he heard countless wolf howls coming from far away.
Zhang Xudong knew that things were going to go wrong, and the beast's revenge was coming. Zhang Xudong lit the kerosene lamp, took out two turtle boxes from the space and placed them on the table.
He took out five magazines and some bullets and started loading the bullets calmly.
Grandma was also awakened by the wolf's howling. She came out of the inner room and saw the turtle box on the table. She picked up one and shook it with her hand, then skillfully took it apart and put it back together again.
"This is a new gun, but it looks good in this box, but it's useless. It jams easily, and the firing pin breaks easily.
This is a game of luck; it might fail you at any crucial moment. It's fine to play with when you have nothing to do, but don't count on it when things get tough."
Zhang Xudong's mood soured immediately after hearing his grandmother's words. The things he had found as if they were treasures turned out to be useless. These Japanese were really deceiving.
Zhang Xudong and his grandmother chatted while he loaded his magazine. As the wolf's howling drew closer, the grandmother and grandson blew out the oil lamp, each picking up a gun and bracing themselves.
Zhang Xudong also carried the Tang sword on his back and gave his grandmother a Japanese bayonet, and only then was he fully armed.
A short while later, a burst of intense gunfire was heard from the direction of the troops west of the county town, accompanied by the roars and howls of wolves and wild boars.
Then, the same noise was heard from the east side of the county town. The county government must have been prepared, having sent troops to guard the east and west entrances to the county town, preventing the beasts from entering.
Zhang Xudong and his grandmother both breathed a sigh of relief. As long as large groups of wild beasts couldn't get in, even if a few creatures sneaked in, they wouldn't cause any trouble.
After the gunshots, the county town erupted in chaos. From everywhere came the sounds of adults scolding, children crying, the banging of gongs, the breaking of glass tiles, and the squealing of monkeys.
It seems that the wolves and wild boars have entered the city, but the most troublesome monkeys have come in.
As the gunfire gradually died down, the sky was already slightly brighter. Zhang Xudong walked into the yard, jumped onto the roof, and looked around in the morning light.
You won’t know until you see it. When you see it, you will be shocked. On the roof not far away, monkeys were jumping nimbly and running away into the distance.
As they fled, they picked up roof tiles and threw them at people or the ground.
But what surprised Zhang Xudong was that there were monkeys flying over the roofs in front, behind, left and right of his house, but no monkeys passed within a radius of 20 meters from his house.
All the monkeys went around his house. It seems that the monkeys still gave him face and knew that he was there, so they took a detour.
Zhang Xudong sniffed hard at himself. There was no smell. He showered twice a day, so how could this monkey still smell him?
Zhang Xudong waited until it was bright outside and no more monkeys were seen passing by before letting his grandmother and the children leave the house.
It seems that today's crisis has passed, but I don't know the extent of the losses everywhere.
