Accompanied by loud singing, military green trucks drove out of the camp.
Zhang Xudong took Zhang Xiyan's hand and stood with his grandmother on the road at the entrance of the camp, watching the cars drive away into the distance.
The people on the train, whether they were crying or laughing, whether they were old or young, all roared and sang their favorite military songs.
They all stood facing backwards in the truck bed, saluted towards the camp where they once lived, and gradually drove away.
He Jingxian rolled down from a truck and hugged her grandmother, Zhang Xudong, and Zhang Xiyan one by one.
He kissed them all on the cheek, turned around, and climbed onto the truck without looking back.
She didn't dare look back.
He Xiyan's voice crying out for her sister was like a rope pulling at her heart.
Grandma's reluctant look was attracting her soul like a magnet.
If she looked back, she was afraid she wouldn't be able to leave.
Zhang Xudong picked up his sister who was crying uncontrollably, and watched the familiar figure disappear in the distance. Tears finally rolled down his tiger eyes.
"Dongzi, why don't we just follow them? Isn't it true that people are still alive no matter where they live?"
Grandma looked at the tearful brother and sister and said worriedly.
"No, grandma. Let's not go, at least not now. Let's wait until Yanyan is older!"
Zhang Xudong wiped away his tears, shook his head and said.
After seeing He Jingxian and the others off, Zhang Xudong did nothing but pick up his younger sister and cook at home. He didn't go anywhere.
He had been paying attention to the movements in the space, hoping that He Jingxian would appear in the space.
But for several days, He Jingxian only left a note in the bedroom of the space to let everyone know that she was safe. But her figure was nowhere to be seen.
It was not until the sixth night that He Jingxian appeared in the space, exhausted.
Just as Zhang Xudong was about to say something, He Jingxian spoke up:
"Brother Dong, please prepare some food for me. I'm going to take a shower first. I'm going to smell bad." After saying that, he ran to the bathroom.
Zhang Xudong was worried she was too hungry, so he heated up a cup of milk for her and brought her a few pieces of cake. "Just fill your stomach first, and save your stomach first."
After a while, He Jingxian came out wearing a big bath towel.
"Brother Dong, I've washed all my clothes, so I need to find yours first. Go out and find all your extra sweaters, cotton-padded jackets, military coats, etc. I can use them."
"Where are you now? What's the situation?" Zhang Xudong asked anxiously without moving.
"We're in Harbin now. You go out first and let me eat something. I can't move while you're here." He Jingxian urged Zhang Xudong to go out first.
"It's not like I haven't seen it before." Zhang Xudong muttered softly and hurried out of the space.
When He Jingxian saw Zhang Xudong running away, she smiled and opened Zhang Xudong's wardrobe.
The wardrobe contains all the clothes Zhang Xudong wore in his previous life, for all seasons.
He Jingxian picked out all the plain-colored autumn clothes, sweaters, cotton coats, cotton pants, etc. in the closet.
He Jingxian did a big house clearing, and Zhang Xudong's closet suddenly looked empty.
He Jingxian put on a set of long underwear and began to eat and drink. She was not very hungry, but she was very greedy.
Zhang Xudong came back not long after, with only a few pieces of clothes in his arms.
The truth is, he really didn't have many extra clothes in this era. Not only him, but almost everyone was like this.
After Zhang Xudong came in, he felt a little distressed when he saw He Jingxian wolfing down the chicken leg. She looked like someone who had fled from famine.
After He Jingxian had eaten and drunk her fill and burped a few times, she felt alive again.
"How have you been getting through the past few days? Why have you lost so much weight? Are you short of food?" Zhang Xudong asked after seeing that He Jingxian had eaten her fill.
"Don't worry, there's plenty of food. But what can you eat on a train? There are so many of us, it's good enough if they can feed us.
Every meal consisted of steamed buns or cornbread with water, sometimes with a piece of pickled mustard greens. Even a bowl of hot, multi-grain porridge was a luxury.
You said that you and grandma have spoiled me at your house, and now I can only eat cold steamed buns and steamed bread every day. How can I eat it?"
He Jingxian looked at Zhang Xudong and complained.
Zhang Xudong felt relieved after hearing what He Jingxian said. As long as he was not starving, it would be fine. If he couldn't eat, it could only mean that he was not very hungry.
"Then why don't you secretly take some food from the space?"
"No chance! There are so many people around on the train, and they can smell whatever you eat.
The only place I could sneak a bite of food was in the bathroom, but I couldn't eat in there! The smell was unbearable. So I had to go hungry."
Zhang Xudong looked at He Jingxian speechlessly. No one else could think of eating secretly in the toilet.
"Where are you now? Where is your destination exactly?" Zhang Xudong asked.
"We arrived in Harbin last night. We are told that we will stay there this year and continue our journey north in the spring of next year.
I heard they were going to Jia County in Heihe, a county on the banks of the Heilongjiang River. "Across the river is the Russian territory," He Jingxian replied.
