Chapter 11: Dividing the Meat

Zhang Xudong filled his backpack with all kinds of mushrooms and fungus, which he would give as gifts to people like Aunt Wang next door, Brother Zhuzi, and other neighbors.

If the relationship with the neighbors is good, there will be someone to help grandma and the little girl if they encounter any problems when I am not at home.

I took out some more firewood, tied it into a bundle with rope, and placed it on the ground. I'll leave the pheasants and rabbits in the space for now and eat the pork for the next two days.

Zhang Xudong put on his backpack and wanted to carry the wild boar on his shoulders, but seeing how dirty it was, he felt he couldn't bring himself to do it. He finally understood what "dirty as a pig" meant.

Zhang Xudong imagined carrying the wild boar on his back, so close to his nose. The smell, the feeling, would be so refreshing. Just thinking about it gave him a shiver in the sweltering heat. So, he simply grabbed one of the boar's hind legs and dragged it along.

---------------------------------

Under the scorching sun, a young man, carrying a large backpack on his back, a large bundle of firewood in his left hand, and dragging a wild boar much bigger than himself in his right hand, slowly came down the bare mountain.

This is how Zhang Xudong appears in front of people.

Because they were cutting reeds to clear the wasteland, more people were working today. It was too hot, so they had already finished work. When Zhang Xudong came down from the mountain, he was met by several villagers who lived at the end of the village.

Several people looked at Zhang Xudong's appearance, their mouths hanging open in astonishment. They were probably both frightened and surprised. Until Zhang Xudong walked up to them, one of the members slapped his face hard before speaking:

"Are you Dongzi? Did you kill a wild boar?"

"Uncle Arita, it's me. How come you don't recognize me? This wild boar fell into a ravine and got knocked unconscious. I stabbed it and dragged it back."

"Can someone help me call the captain? I'm sending the wild boar to the brigade headquarters now."

Upon hearing this, the men were no longer hungry or tired, and they felt energized. Those who were helping to drag the wild boar did so, while those who were helping to call for help quickly ran to fetch help. It was clear how powerful the allure of eating meat was! This meant Zhang Xudong had no chance.

Zhang Xudong took the opportunity to go back home, put the backpack and firewood in the woodshed, and said to his grandmother who was making dumplings in the main room, "Grandma, I'm back. I'll go to the brigade headquarters first and be back soon." Then he went out and followed her to the brigade headquarters.

When Zhang Xudong arrived at the brigade headquarters, quite a few people were already in the yard. The brigade leader, secretary, accountant, and several other cadres were all standing neatly in front of the office door.

Seeing Zhang Xudong coming, people made way and greeted him in a chaotic manner. When the team leader saw Zhang Xudong approaching, he took off his shoes and slapped Zhang Xudong on the butt without waiting for him to speak.

"You bastard, you troublesome thing, who told you to go into the mountains? Who told you to hunt wild boars? You are so capable, so talented, why don't you go to heaven..."

Zhang Xudong, realizing things were going badly, turned and ran, circling the yard. The team leader chased him, cursing at him. That was a real riot.

"Third Uncle, you see I'm fine. I picked up the wild boar when it was about to fall to death. I just gave it a stab." Seeing that the captain could no longer run and was standing there gasping for breath, Zhang Xudong hurriedly explained.

The captain took a long breath before saying, "Do you think I'll believe you? You went up the mountain today, and it threw you half to death? Are you its grandson? Is it so eager to let you eat its flesh?"

"Third Grandpa, I've practiced martial arts with my teacher for several years at school. I'm very strong. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to drag the wild boar down the mountain. Let's kill the pig first. It's so hot, we don't want it to go bad."

"Kill the pig first, and I'll settle the score with you later."

"Dachun, take a few people to kill the pigs." The captain said to the militia company commander.

After making the arrangements, the team leader pulled Zhang Xudong into the office. "What do you want to do with this pork?"

"According to the team's rules, we should do what we should do."

"The team's rule is that whoever kills the prey gets one-third of the meat, and the team gives you one centimeter for every ten pounds of meat. This pig can't produce more than three hundred pounds of meat, so I'll give you another twenty-eight centimeters. I'll put it on your grandmother's account."

While the captain was talking, Zhang Xudong immersed himself in the space supermarket. He roughly estimated that there were about 7,000 to 8,000 kilograms of potatoes and sweet potatoes inside, and an idea came to his mind.

"Third Uncle, you can do whatever you want. I have an idea, too. Do you think it's feasible?"

"If you have something to say, just say it. Don't dilly-dally."

"You see, each family can't get much of this meat. It will be gone after a few meals. My dad had a comrade who had a batch of potatoes and sweet potatoes.

But eating only potatoes and sweet potatoes is not enough, so I want to exchange his potatoes for meat.

Potatoes and sweet potatoes are a bit more expensive than vegetables, so let's go with 60 cents per pound. Wild boar meat isn't very tasty, so let's go with 6 yuan per pound.

So one pound of wild boar meat can be exchanged for ten pounds of potatoes and sweet potatoes. Do you think it's appropriate?"

After hearing this, the captain's hands trembled, his mouth quivered, and the corners of his eyes turned red.

"Perfect, perfect, absolutely perfect. This is life-saving food! Eating potatoes and sweet potatoes is definitely better than eating tree bark and roots! Two hundred kilograms of meat can be exchanged for two thousand kilograms of potatoes and sweet potatoes. Each person can get more than two kilograms, which will last for quite some time."

"I'm going to have a meeting with them, you wait here." After saying that, he hurriedly went to call for help.

Zhang Xudong went to watch the pig slaughtering when he had nothing to do. Strength lies in numbers, and the pigs were almost all slaughtered. He had just watched for a while when he heard his grandmother's voice from outside the yard.
