Chapter 6 Unexpected Ways to Make Money
Jiang Yutang seemed to be still in a daze until the doorbell rang more and more irritably, at which point she hurriedly stood up to open the door.
I cautiously opened the door a crack and saw two people standing outside. One of them had a cigarette in his mouth, a beer belly, and an impatient look on his face.
"What's going on? Why did it take so long to open the door?"
The other person, wearing glasses, looked at her with a smile: "Miss Jiang, did we arrive too early and disturb your rest?"
Seeing the file bag tucked under the other person's arm, with "Helan Antiques" written on it, Jiang Yutang remembered that she had arranged for someone to come to the store to look at some things that morning.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I overslept, please come in!" She quickly opened the door and let the two of them in.
The two entered the store one after the other. She followed behind, grabbed a handful of hair and casually tied it up behind her head, then breathed on her palm.
Thankfully, it doesn't taste bad.
Jiang Yutang stood beside them with a smile, introducing the antiques in the shop to the two of them.
The antique shop was opened by her grandfather, but now that he is sick and hospitalized, she has to take care of it.
It's called an antique shop, but there's nothing of note in the store. The oldest item is just a chamber pot, but what kind of kind person would buy a chamber pot as a collectible?
Sure enough, after looking around, the man with the cigarette in his mouth looked increasingly grim, and he curled his lip in a mocking smile: "Is that all?"
Jiang Yutang smiled and slightly straightened up: "I wonder if there was anything this gentleman wanted before he came? I'll look for it for you."
What's the oldest item in your store?
“Uh…” Jiang Yutang’s smile froze, and her gaze swept over the chamber pot in the cabinet.
All three of them turned their gaze to the brightly colored chamber pot.
The man's face darkened: "Are you kidding me?" With that, he angrily turned and walked out.
Jiang Yutang felt a pang in her chest, inwardly blaming herself: I've messed up again. If Grandpa were here, this would never have happened.
What is this thing?
The man took two steps out and was tripped by a bundle, which kicked out the clothes inside.
"This is!" Jiang Yutang's pupils dilated instantly.
This was a bundle from the Jiang family that she had accidentally brought back; it contained nothing but some toiletries and clothes.
Just as she was about to step forward to explain, the bespectacled man next to her pulled up his pants, squatted down, and carefully lifted a corner of the fabric with his delicate fingers to examine it closely.
The man who was smoking slowly squatted down, casually rubbing the cigarette butt out on the floor. His beer belly was comically protruding from his front, his legs unable to close, but his expression was unusually serious.
Seeing the two of them looking serious, Jiang Yutang wisely stood still and didn't go up to disturb them, because she suddenly realized something.
If the items in her shop are defective, then these few pieces of clothing in front of you are genuine antiques!
The room was so quiet you could hear someone swallowing. The more silent the other person was, the more confident she became.
Jiang Yutang kindly suggested, "Why don't you take it to the table and examine it more closely?"
"No need."
The man, with his legs crossed and beer belly puffed out, pointed at the clothes on the ground: "Name your price, I'll take them all."
Jiang Yutang's eyes widened in surprise. She didn't know how much the two pieces of clothing were worth, so she just casually offered a price.
"Five hundred thousand."
It's just two pieces of clothing; if the price is too high, they'll naturally try to negotiate a lower price.
"make a deal."
The bespectacled man readily agreed and quickly handed a check to Jiang Yutang.
Jiang Yutang blankly accepted the check and heard the other party say "Happy cooperation." He packed two pieces of clothing and walked out, as if afraid that she would change her mind.
"Hey, I'll see you two out."
She rushed to the door, but before she could even peek out, the bespectacled man suddenly turned around and pushed up his glasses.
"If I may ask, where did these two cultural relics come from?"
"Well..." Jiang Yutang mimicked him by pushing up his non-existent glasses, "We naturally have our own methods, but it's really inconvenient to reveal them."
"Indeed." The other party showed a regretful expression: "However, Miss Jiang, if you have any more of this kind of good stuff in the future, please contact me as soon as possible."
After seeing the two off, Jiang Yutang looked at the check in her hand and felt nothing but disbelief.
Without saying a word, she grabbed the key to the entrance and rushed out of the shop, flagged down a taxi, and headed to the hospital.
The nurse at the tollbooth fell into deep thought as she looked at the check Jiang Yutang handed her.
"Ms. Jiang, the hospital does not accept checks. You can go to the bank next door to complete the formalities first, and then come back to pay the fees."
Jiang Yutang, who was receiving a check for the first time, said: "...I'm sorry."
A steady "beep" sound came from the quiet ward. The old man on the bed was wearing an oxygen mask, and his thin, withered arms were quietly placed to the side.
Jiang Yutang gently wiped the old man's arm, her eyes filled with loneliness and worry.
"Grandpa, take good care of yourself and get well soon. Your granddaughter will pick you up from the hospital once you've recovered."
Her previous difficulty was a lack of money; now, she has found a way to make money.
After leaving the hospital, Jiang Yutang went to the supermarket and pharmacy and bought a lot of things. After returning to the store, she made a phone call and quit all her previous part-time jobs.
She put the daily necessities and medicines she bought into a cloth bag, and decorated the bag to avoid it being too conspicuous.
The money left in the hospital is enough for her surgery even if she doesn't wake up for a week. She can leave with peace of mind after settling her grandfather in.
Jiang Yutang took a deep breath, gripped the cloth bag tightly with her left hand, and tentatively turned the pages of the book with her trembling right hand.
Another sharp pain shot through my fingers, and as the white light struck, I felt a dizzying sensation.
Jiang Yutang's eyelids trembled involuntarily twice. As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw her whole family gathered around her head, looking at her with worried expressions.
Startled, she closed her eyes again, folded her hands in front of her chest, and her mind was filled with the "You're awake" emoji from Journey to the West.
"Tang'er? Tang'er, are you awake?"
Yun asked worriedly, taking out a handkerchief from her bosom and gently covering her forehead: "Why did you suddenly faint? We called you but you didn't respond. We were so scared."
"I'm fine." Jiang Yutang sat up and shook her head. "My daughter was just too tired. She just wanted to lean against something and rest, but she fell asleep right away. I made you all worry."
"Oh, I'm glad you're alright."
It was already dusk. Jiang Yutang recalled the time since she returned and said guiltily, "I'm sorry, the journey was already tiring, and I've made you carry me on your back."
Jiang Songzhi was taken aback: "You slept for less than half an hour before I even carried you on my back."
Now it was Jiang Yutang's turn to be stunned. She had been busy for six or seven hours when she got back, how come only a short while had passed?
"Oh, I see. Maybe I was too tired and got confused."
The excuse they made up was taken seriously by the Yun family. They were children who had been pampered since childhood, and it would be a hardship for them to travel such a long distance. Of course, they would be tired.
Jiang Sumin frowned as he looked at her and said coldly, "Now that she's awake, everything's fine. Everyone should go and rest."
The people who had been surrounding her dispersed to find places to rest. Jiang Sumin turned back to her and said, "Take good rest, don't drag us down later."
Watching the other person limp away, Jiang Yutang felt a surge of warmth in her chest.
She was preoccupied with the cloth bag she had brought. She hadn't seen it when she looked around, but after everyone had gone to sleep, she tiptoed to the bushes and found the bag. Only after checking that everything inside was there did she breathe a sigh of relief.
Just as she was putting her things away to rest, Cheng Daier rushed over and grabbed her hand, her face pale.
"Help! Help my brother!"
