Chapter 19 Spicy Cabbage

The first batch of clothes has been made by Granny Shen. Granny Shen's stitches are very fine, and the fabric sent over was not wasted. About a third of the bolt of fabric was used to make two sets of adult clothes and one set of children's clothes.

When the clothes were brought home, Chen Xiaocai and Chen Xiaomai were overjoyed.

Some of Chen Xiaocai and Chen Xiaomai's clothes were altered by Chen Xiaomi, whose handiwork was really not presentable.

After putting on her new clothes, Chen Xiaocai became very hesitant and afraid of getting them dirty.

Lu Lin put on the clothes as soon as he received them on the first day. The clothes Lu Lin used to wear were hand-me-downs from Chen Xiaomi, patched and mended again, and Lu Lin really wasn't used to wearing them.

The first collaboration went well, and Lu Lin gained a lot of trust in Granny Shen.

As the saying goes, one should not trouble two people with one matter. Lu Lin cut some more cloth and left an old cotton quilt with Granny Shen, asking her to help him take apart the old quilt and make cotton clothes.

Chen Xiaomi had hunted quite a few rabbits and foxes. The pelts of these animals could be exchanged for money. The intact pelts were given to Chen Xiaomi to exchange for money, while the damaged ones were left aside.

Chen Xiaomi originally planned to piece together the damaged fur to use as a blanket in the winter, but now that she has money, she doesn't need to do that anymore.

Lu Lin picked out some and had Granny Chen sew them onto the collar and cuffs of the cotton-padded coat to increase its warmth.

Grandma Shen never expected that Chen Xiaomi would be so rich, buying so much fabric at once.

It's already difficult for people in the countryside to make just one garment at a time. I never expected that Lu Lin would send so much fabric, as well as furs, even if they were damaged!

Making cotton-padded clothes takes more effort and requires more materials, so Lu Lin raised the price again.

After a successful first collaboration, subsequent collaborations went more smoothly.

Over the next ten days or so, Lu Lin brought back eight more cotton-padded coats from Granny Shen.

Four items for adults and four items for children.

Chen Xiaomi looked at the clothes and said, "These clothes are really well made!"

"Yes!" Compared to what Chen Xiaomi made, this one looks much better. It was definitely the right decision to ask Granny Chen for help.

"They actually made so many clothes," Chen Xiaomi exclaimed in amazement.

“Grandma Chen is an expert; she must be quite economical in making clothes,” Lu Lin said.

Lu Lin went to Granny Chen's place discreetly, but news travels fast in the countryside, and Chen Xiaomi and the others, dressed in new clothes, still attracted attention.

Lu Tong felt a pang of sadness when she saw Lu Lin wearing new clothes.

This autumn harvest, the Lu family had more work to do because of the loss of the second son's family. She was also forced to work in the fields. Lu Tong was very jealous of Lu Lin, who was able to stay out of it, and kept hoping that Lu Lin would have bad luck. However, she did not expect that Chen Xiaomi would treat Lu Lin well and even made new clothes for him.

...

The Shen family.

Granny Shen was overjoyed to see that she had earned a copper coin.

By making clothes for Lu Lin, Granny Shen earned a total of 350 coins, which made her very happy.

"Grandma, Brother Lu Lin is really generous!" Chen Chi couldn't help but say.

Granny Chen nodded and said, "Yes! With so many copper coins, we can buy more rice and flour."

The feeling of being hungry in winter is truly awful.

Chen Chi rolled her eyes and said, "Granny, I heard that Chen Xiaomi found a ginseng in the mountains and sold it for a lot of money."

Chen Xiaomi had spent ten taels of silver to find someone to marry into the family, and the Chen brothers' reaction was similar. However, after Lu Lin entered the family, he sold his marbles and had money again, gaining six taels of silver. Chen Xiaomi then became more generous when buying things.

In the village, few people would talk to Chen Xiaomi, and Chen Xiaocai wasn't very popular with the children either; the village kids didn't like playing with him. Chen Xiaomai was also a bit slow-witted, so no one bothered with him either.

There were still many curious villagers; who wouldn't want more money in their family? So, some of them asked Lu Lin about it.

Lu Lin secretly told these people that Chen Xiaomi had dug up ginseng in the deep mountains.

Lu Lin casually mentioned it, and soon half the village knew that Chen Xiaomi had dug up such a good thing deep in the mountains.

"It's strange, but since Lu Lin joined the Shen family, the Chen brothers seem to have had an easier time. The old woman in the Lu family said that Lu Lin was a jinx to his family, but that might be wrong. He might actually be a lucky charm for the family."

Chen Chi nodded and said, "Maybe."

Granny Shen brought out a jar of spicy cabbage and said, "When are you going to send this cabbage to the three Chen brothers? They were able to earn so much money this time thanks to them."

Grandma Chen pondered that the three Chen brothers were all busy hunting, Chen Xiaocai was just a half-grown boy, and Chen Xiaomai was ignorant. The three brothers had no land and mostly ate wild vegetables they dug up.

His daily diet must be quite rough; Lu Lin, being a man, probably doesn't know how to cook anything fancy.

Lu Lin was delighted to receive the kimchi delivered by Chen Chi. He had been busy building the kang (a heated brick bed) lately and hadn't had time to cook, so he had been eating rather coarsely lately. The three Chen brothers were all hard-working and could get by with just a little bit of food, which frustrated Lu Lin, who was a picky eater. This jar of kimchi arrived just in time, as kimchi is very appetizing.

The cabbages in this world are all natural and taste quite good.
