Chapter 7 Wasteful Things

Lu Lin has been here for two days and has roughly figured out the daily routines of the three Chen brothers.

Chen Xiaomi goes out early and returns late every day to hunt and support the family. Sometimes Chen Xiaocai takes Chen Xiaomai out to collect firewood, dig wild vegetables, and feed the chickens. Sometimes, Chen Xiaomai is left at home.

Seeing the three Chen brothers so busy every day, Lu Lin, who had been lying down for a long time, felt a little guilty.

Even a child knows how to support a family, yet this grown man just lies on a door panel and sleeps.

Lu Lin felt he needed to earn more money; the quilt at home was too thin, and he was afraid he would freeze to death if he continued to sleep like that.

When Chen Xiaocai returned home carrying a load of firewood, she smelled a delicious aroma.

Chen Xiaocai sniffed, somewhat curious.

Lu Lin glanced at Chen Xiaocai and said, "You're back. I made poached eggs."

Chen Xiaocai asked somewhat suspiciously, "Poached egg? Where did the egg come from? We have five chicks at home, but they are all too young to lay eggs."

Lu Lin casually replied, "I found a nest of pheasants and picked them up."

Chen Xiaocai was somewhat surprised by Lu Lin's good luck, but she didn't delve into it; having something to eat was always a good thing.

Chen Xiaocai looked at the poached egg on the plate, hesitated for a moment, then looked at Lu Lin and said, "You have a bite."

Lu Lin looked at Chen Xiaocai and thought to himself: This kid is quite generous! He even let him eat eggs.

Lu Lin's small shop was piled with two large baskets of eggs, each containing about four hundred eggs. In his previous life, as the standard of living in the countryside improved, many families went out to work, and many families no longer raised chickens but chose to buy eggs instead.

The eggs sold at the convenience store are naturally from factory-farmed chickens, and their nutritional value is somewhat inferior to that of domesticated chickens. However, they are still eggs, and having something to eat is better than having nothing at all.

Before Chen Xiaocai returned, he had already eaten two rice porridges and secretly cooked a bowl of rice porridge using rice sold at the convenience store. He felt quite satisfied with his meal.

Lu Lin took a bite, and Chen Xiaocai snatched the rice bowl back.

Lu Lin suddenly realized Chen Xiaocai's purpose. Chen Xiaocai was probably worried that he would poison him, so he let him eat a bite first to make sure it was not poisoned before he started eating.

Lu Lin was somewhat helpless; at such a young age, he already had so many tricks up his sleeve.

Chen Xiaocai looked up at Lu Lin and asked, "Did you put in oil?"

Lu Lin nodded and said, "Yes."

Chen Xiaocai muttered angrily, "What a waste of money."

Lu Lin: "..." He was actually scolded by a child as a spendthrift.

Lu Lin suddenly remembered that modern women are always talking about losing weight and avoid fried food like the plague, while oil was a rare commodity in ancient times, generally extracted only from animal fat. Many people here didn't have access to oil. The Chen family's oil must have been rendered from lard.

Lu Lin rolled his eyes. In his small shop, there were still more than a dozen barrels of salad oil. In the past, many families in the village used to exchange grain for oil. However, after conditions improved, many people stopped farming and could only buy oil to eat. When the chef in the factory came to buy oil, he would buy several barrels at a time.

A dozen or so buckets of salad oil, if taken out, should last for a long time.

Lu Lin suddenly felt very rich, but unfortunately, there were many things he couldn't bring himself to take out.

Chen Xiaocai carefully ate a fried egg, and then let Chen Xiaomai eat one. Although the two brothers seemed a little reluctant to finish, they both stopped eating in tacit agreement.

Chen Xiaocai hid the remaining two fried eggs.

Lu Lin thought to himself: Is this meant for Chen Xiaomi to eat? The three Chen brothers in the village have terrible reputations, one worse than the other. The youngest is an idiot, the second is an accomplice to evil, and the eldest is a madman... But in fact, the three Chen brothers have a really good relationship! Lu Lin felt a warm feeling.

"Brother, that guy's fried eggs were delicious! But he used too much oil. He really doesn't know how to manage a household," Chen Xiaocai complained.

Chen Xiaomi has quite an appetite; before she knew it, she had eaten both fried eggs.

Chen Xiaomi is not a picky eater; she can enjoy brown rice buns with relish, but she also loves gourmet food.

Lu Lin's fried eggs were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, very delicious. Chen Xiaomi ate them with great pleasure and they were gone before she knew it.

"Forget it, it's just oil. We can just catch a couple more animals and render some more oil."

Chen Xiaocai glanced at Chen Xiaomi and asked, "Big brother, didn't you catch any prey today?"

Chen Xiaomi said with some worry, "It won't be easy to catch them. Winter might come a little early this year."

Chen Xiaocai blinked and said, "Now that he's awake, let him do the work."

Chen Xiaomi thought for a moment and said, "Alright." Chen Xiaomi thought to herself: Lu Lin is a man after all. Even if he can't catch the prey, he can still help gather some food in the mountains.
