Chapter 258: The Great Library of the Nameless Tower
A seemingly abrupt turmoil ended.
This battle against a new city and a major city of the Free Cities was over in just a few days. Although it was second only to the Battle of Five Armies in terms of scale in the past hundred years, it only has a few records of it.
In 2949, Riverside Fort was established. Three Ringwraiths, with 15,000 Orcs and dozens of giant beasts, attacked Riverside Fort. Five thousand soldiers of Riverside Fort defended it all night. At dawn, the lord returned with 6,000 cavalry and wiped out all the Orcs.
A Grey Wizard and a Dwarf of Erebor took part in this battle.
Rivendell sent troops to intercept the trolls and dispatched a light elf to Riverside Castle for support.
On the same day, Dale, Lake-town, and Road-town were attacked. The entire army of the Dwarves of Erebor was dispatched to assist in the defense of Dale, and the Woodland Kingdom dispatched a large army to wipe out the invaders from Lake-town and Road-town. Halfway through, the lord arrived and led the garrison to charge the enemy and won a great victory.
The historian paused for a moment, and after giving a rough summary of the events, he began to record the course of the battle in detail, including the actions taken by each team, the commander-in-chief's strategy, and so on.
Further broken down are the details of the battlefield, as well as the names and actions of some important participants, such as Gandalf running back and forth on the city wall, using his fire to ignite hope for people.
Another example is the story of the brave dwarf Balin rushing towards the Ringwraiths, and Glorfindel appearing with golden light all over his body, who left a deep impression on many people.
After the battle, the lord returned to his territory and did not go out for a long time.
The people in the territory found it very novel and a little uncomfortable.
"To your subjects, most of the time, you only exist in legends and stories. You are an illusory existence that can only be felt through the mouths of others."
Three months after the war, Gandalf and Levi walked side by side along the lake, slowly approaching the most conspicuous nameless tower in the entire territory.
As they walked, Gandalf lit a cigarette and discussed some situations in the territory with Levi.
It was common for a wizard to offer advice and guidance to a lord.
"Now that you have returned for a long time, they can see you every day and feel your presence with their senses. This has caused many people to temporarily be unable to reconcile their perceptions of reality and fantasy."
He continued to talk about the strange phenomena in Levi's territory.
"It's not so much that I feel uncomfortable, but it feels a little unreal."
"People's memories are short. They will slowly adapt in the future."
"I guess so."
Levi stretched lazily, feeling the relaxation.
Yeah, I have some free time.
"My God, this tower is really tall."
There was an exclamation from the front of the tower, and a dwarf was looking up.
It was Balin. He arrived at the gate of the nameless tower earlier than the other two. It seemed that he had been standing there for a while.
On the other side, Gandalf also looked up. He stared at the clouds that occasionally floated over the top of the tower, and he also agreed with Balin's words.
"I have to say, it is really tall, taller than any tower I have seen in Middle-earth."
“This tower took a lot of work for me, especially the interior structure and the design of the room.”
Levi looked at the tower, every detail of which was built by himself, and fell into reminiscence.
This tower has been built on and off since its construction began, and it has been under construction for several years.
If you just do nothing else and keep building the tower, the time you spend can definitely be shortened several times.
However, it is normal for survival building players to play with Gu Nai, so it’s not his fault.
perhaps.
The door opened and the three of them walked into the tower together.
Unlike when it was just built, the internal structure of the tower has changed a lot. The more dangerous and secretive facilities such as the demon-infused altar have been moved to the upper floors, and the lower floor has been arranged into a large library. There are massive amounts of books from all over the place, and a dedicated person is responsible for sorting and placing them. Every once in a while, someone will come to clean and maintain the environment.
“What a place full of wisdom.”
As soon as he came in, Gandalf put out his pipe consciously.
He walked into a door on the side, and after entering, he couldn't help but open his mouth slightly.
Looking up, all I could see were books. There were books everywhere, endless stairs leading to all directions, and sturdy bookshelves carrying the books.
There are thoughtful signs at the entrances of these stairs to indicate which staircase leads to which bibliographic section.
“This place is amazing.”
Balin walked in, looked left and right, and couldn't stop looking around.
First of all, as a dwarf, such huge and magnificent things are very much in line with his aesthetic taste.
In addition, as a scholar among the dwarves who is more studious and the think tank of Erebor, books are also something he loves.
The two together stimulated his nerves and made him feel happy from head to toe.
"I didn't tell Bilbo about this tower, and of course I didn't know it looked like this when I went to visit him."
"If Bilbo knew about this," said Balin, "he would certainly be happy to send me his own books to enrich the bookshelf."
"Book?" Levi asked.
"Yes, a book. Bilbo said he was going to write a book, but he hasn't even decided on a title yet. It will probably be some time before he actually starts writing."
“Then I’ll be looking forward to it.”
As the two were chatting, Gandalf raised his eyebrows and suddenly saw a relatively new book placed on a separate counter.
"This is…"
He picked up the book and saw that it was titled "A General History of Roadside Fort".
Judging from the appearance of the book and the writing on it, it is obvious that someone has recently touched it and written some new things.
"This is one of the few books that is being serialized in the library." Seeing that Gandalf was interested, Levi mentioned it.
"It was specially written and revised by the historian of Roadside Fort."
"Um…"
Gandalf nodded and opened the book.
"In the year 2940 of the Third Era, Roadside Fort was built, and then a miracle happened."
"…Levi walked the land and struck off a piece of the first oak tree he saw. He gave the piece of oak to his people and told them that this was the length of a square. A new measurement was born."
"Later, Livy corrected it to 'one meter' and continued to subdivide it into centimeters, millimeters and other units."
"Is that so?" Gandalf asked, looking up.
"Well, just take it as that, but the people in the territory are still used to saying 'ge' verbally, and only the more strict written records use 'mi'."
"Well... using 'ten' as a whole unit is a good way of measuring."
Approving of this method, Gandalf continued to flip through the pages and soon finished reading the "history book".
The most recent major event was the war three months ago.
"A brave Dwarf of Erebor, that's me."
Balin looked at the records above and his mouth was almost crooked with smile.
This trip was really worth it.
Unlike Balin's simple appreciation, Gandalf looked at the library and the various facilities in the tower and thought a lot.
"What about higher levels?"
"That's a secret. I use it for research."
"Research?"
Levi shook the rune ring on his hand and said, "Yes, research."
Rings Gandalf looked at the two gold rings inlaid with amber, then stared at Levi for a while, without saying anything for a while.
"Hopefully it's nothing dangerous."
"No, it's safe."
"Quite safe."
