The three of them were talking as they walked. When they passed by the threshing ground, they saw a group of children gathered together, chattering happily.
"Sister-in-law, it's so lively in front of Xiuxiu, I want to go and take a look!"
Bai Guoguo saw that there didn't seem to be anything bad happening ahead, so he wanted to join in the fun.
"I want to go too. I want to go too and see what they are doing." Li Xiuxiu, who also loves to be in the limelight, responded enthusiastically.
When Bai Guoguo first got along with Li Xiuxiu, he thought she was a cool sister.
After spending time with her, you'll realize that she's just not very relaxed around people she doesn't know well, but she talks a lot when she gets to know them, which is quite interesting.
"Why are you still like two children?" Mrs. Zhang laughed and shook her head, then followed.
Bai Guoguo and Li Xiuxiu walked forward arm in arm. It turned out that Grandpa He was shooting birds with a slingshot, and some children were scrambling for them below.
I saw Mr. He holding a slingshot, squinting one eye and aiming. With a snap, a little sparrow fell from the sky.
As soon as the little sparrow fell to the ground, the children rushed over and grabbed it with smiles on their faces. They didn't fight, but whoever ran faster got it.
Some parents with children would even take the initiative to share some with the younger children who didn't get any. Many children were holding little sparrows in their hands, which showed that Grandpa He had gotten quite a few of these little things.
Bai Guoguo knew from reading novels that some rural children would roast and eat sparrows, but she had never seen it once.
Just when Bai Guoguo was distracted, Grandpa He shot down several little sparrows one after another.
The pockets of the old man's mountain suit were bulging with small stones.
He was like a great general planning a strategy, calmly pulling the slingshot, aiming and shooting down, aiming and shooting down.
The little sparrows in the sky were originally eyeing the piles of wheat in the threshing ground, hoping to eat some, but they didn't expect that there was a master like Grandpa He around, and these little creatures suffered heavy losses.
Old Mrs. Wen was enjoying the cool air at the foot of a big tree, fanning herself with a palm-leaf fan, and watching Old Man He killing everyone with a smile on her face.
Bai Guoguo opened his mouth and looked at the old man with admiration, shooting down many little sparrows without missing a beat.
Other elderly people who guard the threshing ground use big brooms or branches to physically drive away the insects.
Grandpa He was a smart move, destroying the sparrows physically and letting the children get some to roast and eat.
Mr. He usually looks serious, but he is surprisingly patient with children. He doesn't mind their noise and gives each of them a little sparrow to hold.
Looking at the eager and admiring eyes of the children, Mr. He was very happy, and even a smile appeared on the corners of his eyes and eyebrows.
"Wow, Grandma Wen, Grandpa He is so amazing. I've never seen anyone more accurate with a slingshot than him."
Bai Guoguo walked to the corner of the big tree, and Li Xiuxiu had just separated from her and gone home.
Old lady Baiguo Wen was watching Old Man He killing everyone and jumping for joy.
When Mr. He saw Bai Guoguo jumping around out of the corner of his eye, the smile on his face became even wider.
"The meal is ready. Are you tired?" Old Mrs. Wen looked at Bai Guoguo lovingly.
"Grandma Wen, everyone's been taking good care of me. I'm not tired. Let's go back and eat. Sister Zhang has left first with the dishes."
Bai Guoguo was now holding a dish in one hand and a small basket in the other, which was filled with dry food for the He family.
Mr. He and Mrs. Wen were assigned the job of driving away birds in the threshing ground, and they can't leave yet.
"Good boy, go home and have dinner first. We'll wait for Old Liu to come and take over and then go back."
"Grandpa He, Grandma Wen, I'm leaving first. I have to take the dry food back to your house."
The group of little sparrows had been eliminated or dispersed by Grandpa He. The children, seeing that they could not pick up anything, had already scattered and went home for dinner.
Bai Guoguo watched Mr. He walking towards the big tree and greeted him and Mrs. Wen.
"Go back soon. You've been tired all morning. Take a rest." Old Mrs. Wen waved her hand with a smile, and Old Mr. He nodded.
Bai Guoguo said goodbye to the two elders and went back with a brisk pace.
"This Xiaobai is really good, I like him more and more!"
Old Mrs. Wen looked at Bai Guoguo walking away. She had always wanted to have such a beautiful and caring daughter.
Unfortunately, the eldest daughter passed away early, and the youngest daughter preferred weapons to red dresses. There is not even a cute little girl in their family.
"Well, this little girl has a pure heart and clear eyes, which is rare!"
The old man rarely praised others, so Mrs. Wen looked at him strangely.
"It's rare to hear you praise someone. It seems our Gangzi is blessed."
Mr. He smiled and nodded again.
Bai Guoguo didn't know that she had received such high praise from the two elders. After delivering the dry food to the He family, she went home to have lunch.
Mrs. Zhang invited her to have dinner with her, but she refused and wanted to go back home to eat.
The stew today was a bit oily, so she ate half of it and put it in her space. Then she went to the field and dug up half a bowl of strawberries and picked a melon to eat.
There are more and more strawberries in the field now, and cantaloupes and watermelons are also here, ripening one after another. We can hardly eat them all.
Bai Guoguo picked some cantaloupes, watermelons and strawberries and stored them in the space, relying on them to satisfy his cravings during the winter.
***
As soon as Bai Guoguo arrived at the canteen in the afternoon, he used a big pot to boil a large pot of mung bean soup to cool down the people working in the fields.
The mung bean soup is ready and someone will come to deliver it. Bai Guoguo and the others start preparing dinner.
The weather is hot and the meat cannot be kept. Fortunately, there are cellars in the north. If you smear salt on the pork and put it in the cellar, it can be kept for three or four days.
